Fantastic Comprehensive Of Hawthorne's WorksBy Drew TI am currently in the process of writing a paper on Hawthorne and of the 30 sources I've looked at thus far, this is by far the best. It's a solid reference of Hawthorne's works. Wagenknecht does a wonderful job of putting down the facts and incorporating the opinions and reviews of other Hawthorne scholars. The book remains neutral throughout, which I enjoyed. In writing a paper, it's best to be given the facts with some slight interpretation and then formulate your own views. This book spawns creative thoughts. It's definitely recommended to anyone looking for a comprehensive guide! Additionally, in my research I found a lot of the books on Hawthorne to be quite old. This one if more fresh and contemporary as it was written in 1989. We know more about the dark places in the heart of man today than we did in his time, but nothing we have learned seems to make Hawthorne a less important writer now than he was then.Beginning with a succinct biography of the renowned American writer of the nineteenth century, this book goes on to consider, in successive chapters, all of Hawthorne's tales, romances, and uncompleted experimental writings. -

Governance describes the way countries and societies manage their affairs politically and the way power and authority are exercised. For the poorest and most vulnerable, the difference that good, or particularly bad, governance, makes to their lives is profound: the inability of government institutions to prevent conflict, provide basic security, or basic services can have life-or-death consequences; lack of opportunity can prevent generations of poor families from lifting themselves out of poverty; and the inability to grow economically and collect taxes can keep countries trapped in a cycle of aid-dependency. Understanding governance, therefore, is central to achieving development and ending conflict. During the 1990s donors came to realise that development required better ‘governance’, and DFID recognised early on the need to work with the research community to identify ways of improving governance for better development outcomes. -

This was the Oriental view of the phenomenal world as Maya or Illusion concealing the unity of Brahman under a variety of names and forms. This thesis describes Emerson's introduction to Hindu thought and literature during his college days, reviews the_concept of Maya found in Hindu scriptures, and details Emerson's deepened interest and wide reading in Hindu philosophy in later life. -
Transcendentalism: a Critique of Today's World Through the Eyes Of
Transcendentalism: A Critique of Today’s World Through the Eyes of a Nineteenth Century Transcendentalist Throughout history, human thought has shaped the processes and actions that make up the world we live in today. It has been at the root of every war as well as every treaty and negotiation. Human thought has fueled hatred and acceptance, wrath and peace, and it has endured through history despite each attempt to repress it. There have been intellectual movements throughout history in which human thought has influenced society’s culture and how it approaches its members and problems. Two such time periods were the Enlightenment and the Second Great Awakening, the latter of which being when Transcendentalism first came to the forefront of human thought. Transcendentalism was a spiritual and philosophical movement that developed in the 1820s and 1830s with roots in Kantian philosophy and German Romanticism.1 This philosophy argued for individualism and each person’s ability to make sense of the Universe through their own Spirit and Reason. In today’s world, Transcendentalist thought is often overlooked and is rarely taught or practiced. Regardless, modern society reflects the one in which Transcendentalists lived in the sense that they have both been marked by technological revolutions and the current societal issues are products of those that Transcendentalists once fought against. It is for this reason that we must look at what Transcendentalism is and how Transcendentalists responded to their society and its problems so that we may begin to do the same within our own society. SELF-ACTUALIZATION: TRANSCENDENTALIST DISCOURSE IN THE WORK OF STUART SAUNDERS SMITH José Augusto Duarte Lacerda A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS December 2015 Committee: Roger Schupp, Advisor Timothy Messer-Kruse Graduate Faculty Representative Marilyn Shrude Robert Wallace Thomas Rosenkranz © 2015 José Augusto Duarte Lacerda All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Roger Schupp, Advisor Born and raised in Maine, composer Stuart Saunders Smith (1948) grew up immersed in a milieu that still echoed the influence of the nineteenth-century literary movement known as Transcendentalism. The work of key Transcendentalist figures, such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, show the movement’s emphasis on autonomy, intuition, pacifism, and social justice. But Transcendentalism also maintains a spiritual focus: a claim that each person is part of a single universal spirit—“Oneness.” However, this “Oneness” does not equate to homogeneity of ideas and individual voices. Rather, each person’s divine worth grants them autonomy of thought and agency. Both the social and spiritual ideas of Transcendentalism have informed Smith’s music, his writings on music compositional process, and his personal life. Amongst the Transcendentalist notions displayed in Smith’s music, pacifism and anti- technologism appear in his use of intricate rhythms. A Thoreauvian anti-materialism can be found in Smith’s limited use of instrumentation and in his concept of “percussion ecology.” Moreover, the Transcendentalist non-teleological stance is reflected in Smith’s tendency to write evening-length pieces that disregard form, his recurring references to New England imagery, and his use of non-sequiturs. -

DOWNES Among the pioneers in the perennial migration of winter visitors to Florida was Ralph Waldo Emerson, the beloved philosopher of American ideals. In 1827, ten years before the flowering of the stirring essays on “The American Scholar” and ”Self-Reliance,” the unknown tubercular youth sailed into castle- shadowed St. Augustine harbor seeking the healing climate of the newly-acquired Florida Territory. During his ten-week stay the future scholar as a matter of habit recorded his random thoughts and his impressions of life around him in a series of journal entries, notebook jottings, and letters. These writings, now published in relative com- pleteness, constitute an important historical source, first be- cause of their record of Emerson’s momentous meeting with the atheistic Napoleonic prince-in-exile, Achille Murat; and second because of the light they throw upon social life in the old Spanish town just following American occupation. -

QUAKER STUDIES 12/2 (2008) [196-215] ISSN 1363-013X 'WHAT THEY SEEK FOR IS IN THEMSELVES': QUAKER LANGUAGE AND THOUGHT IN EIGHTEENTH- AND NINETEENTH-CENTURY AMERICAN LITERATURE* James Peacock Keele University, Keele, England ABSTRACT This paper argues that Quakerism was an important influence on a number of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century American writers. Looking at the work of, amongst others, Charles Brockden Brown, Robert Montgomery Bird, Ralph Waldo Emerson and John Greenleaf Whittier, it demonstrates that both the stereotyped depiction of Quakers and the use of Quaker ideas, such as the inward light in literature of the period, helped writers tackle some of the paradoxes of democracy in a young nation. The perceived mystery of Quaker individualism is used in these texts first to dramatise anxiety over the formation ofAmerican 'character' as either fundamentally unique and unknowable or representative of the whole nation, and secondly for more constructive ends in order to create a language able to express unity in diversity. -

Crowder: Poe’s Criticism of Women Writers POE’S CRITICISM OF WOMEN WRITERS ASHBY BLAND CROWDER HENDRIX COLLEGE Striving for disinterestedness, Edgar Allan Poe endeavored to base his criticism squarely upon principles. As a magazinist, he favored the short story and the lyric poem over the novel and over the lengthy poems that were prevalent in his day. Furthermore, he demanded that a work of art not be didactic, that it achieve a unity of effect, that its imagery and meter be appropriate and its grammar acceptable. Vincent Buranelli believes that Poe adhered to an additional critical principle: “being gallant with the ladies” whose works he reviewed.1 Edward Wagenknecht maintains that Poe “made it a rule to avoid harsh criticism of women’s work....”2 Robert D. Jacobs remarks that Poe “employed different standards in reviewing the works of women.”3 Richard Cary asserts that Poe “often ignored his self-ordained rules and bestowed unwarranted praise” when review ing “volumes written by contemporary, sentimental poetesses...
