UNITED WAY supports scholarships United Way of North Idaho generously awarded the NIC Foundation a grant in support of the NIC Professional Workforce Scholarship, which supports NIC students enrolled in career and technical education and workforce training courses. With the opening of the new Career and Technical Education Facility, the number of students eligible for professional workforce scholarships is expected to increase significantly. The NIC student population is a reflection of our community as a whole and our area’s economic environment. United Way has identified that approximately 22 percent of Idahoans are ALICE, an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. Combined with the 11 percent of Idahoans living in poverty, a third of our state is struggling to make ends meet. While education is known to be a stepping stone out of economic hardship and a path towards financial stability, it is not always an option for individuals struggling to afford daily necessities. They agree with Horace Mann who suggested, “Education is the great equalizer.” The Thilos further believe that community 24th Annual colleges play a significant role in the country’s education. To that end, they invest in educational excellence and support the Thilo Health and Sciences Scholarship Drawing to be held endowment to assist students July 12, 2017 enrolled in health professions. Don’t miss out on the fun! “North Idaho College is a true www.nic.edu/rbr asset to the students and citizens of Kootenai County and beyond. Our annual contribution helps meet the Tom and Sue Thilo needs of today’s students,” said Thilo. “Additionally, we believe so strongly in the work of the college that we designated the NIC Foundation as a beneficiary of our estate plan to extend our support after our lifetime.” The Thilos are longtime residents of Kootenai County. Tom retired from a rewarding 25-year career in general surgery and enjoys bicycling, hunting, fishing, and woodworking. Sue was the founding director of Kootenai Health’s Festival of Trees and served for several years on the Idaho State Board of Education. She remains active with the Idaho Community Foundation and is a member of the Coeur d’Alene Salvation Army Kroc Center Advisory Board. Sue and Tom have three adult children and two grandchildren.
