Miss DC 2012, Allyn Rose, along with other members of the 2012 Miss DC class will be helping “Kiss Illness Goodbye” at Trio’s Restaurant on 17th Street from 6-9pm. A $1 donation lets you put a kiss on our banner with all proceeds benefitting Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMNH). You can also meet Miss DC 2009, Jen Corey, and Miss New York 2010, Claire Buffie! Miss DC Sweetheart, Jachele Velez, wins interview award We are so proud of Jachele Velez, Miss DC Sweetheart who won an interview award and was a Top 10 Finalist in the National Sweetheart competition. Jachele competed in the 2012 Miss District of Columbia Scholarship Pageant and received the honors of Overall Interview Winner, Overall Talent Winner, and First Runner-Up. The National Sweetheart pageant, created in 1941, invites together first runners-up from each of the Miss America state preliminary competitions to compete in a Miss America-style national pageant. Each year, the National Sweetheart pageant is held each Labor Day weekend in Hoopeston, Illinois in conjunction with the town’s Sweetcorn Festival. The event is sponsored by the Hoopeston Jaycees and is not an official Miss America Organization pageant. Well done, Jachele! Miss DC 2009 sings for Goodwill of Greater Washington On September 27, Miss DC 2009 wows the crowd at the Italian Embassy event to benefit Goodwill of Greater Washington. Jen was the first contestant to have a “green” platform, “Let’s Talk Trash”. During her year as Miss DC she worked with Goodwill on several videos to ReUse, ReCycle & ReFashion and was featured decorating her first apartment with items from Goodwill. She stays involved with this and a variety of causes and time and again Jen continues to give back. To see a video of her performance, go to www.missdc.org and click on Miss DC News. Miss DC 1997 Sonya Gavankar-McKay honored On October 23 at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, the EnVest Foundation honored 40 individuals under the age of 40 for their professional and philanthropic achievements. The "40under40" award allows the foundation the opportunity to recognize a community of young leaders who are making a difference in the lives of everyday people. Our own Sonya Gavankar-McKay was honored as one of the year’s outstanding philanthropists for her work through the Hugh O’Brian Youth organization. Through Sonya’s leadership, hundreds of DC high school students receive leadership training through experiential learning. The EnVest Foundation is a social philanthropic organization comprised of a network of members with charitable mindsets who understand that meaningful and consistent giving is the pathway to becoming a philanthropist.
