Lindgren, Megan Schliesman, and Emily McKnight Townsend Bios of the Choices authors are available on the CCBC web site at ccbc.education.wisc.edu/about/staffbio.asp CCBC Choices 2016 5 Introduction CCBC Choices is created by librarians at the Cooperative Children’s Book Center (CCBC), a library of the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin–Madison (see Appendix III for more about the CCBC). The CCBC received review copies of about 3,400 new books for children and young adults in 2015, which include most of the trade books published in English by corporate publishers in the United States. While we couldn’t possibly read everything, we have read extensively, looking for books that get us excited about the ways they can engage and inform children and teens. Among the 259 books we’ve chosen, we are sure you will find numerous titles to meet the needs and interests of the children and teens in your professional or personal lives. We are often asked how we choose books for CCBC Choices. We don’t have a formal checklist of criteria, but there are a number of factors we consider, including literary and artistic quality, accuracy, authenticity, and credibility. We may also consider a book because it offers unique or unusual content, especially when we know there is a need for and interest in books on that topic based on our discussions with teachers, librarians, and others who work directly with children and teens. Sometimes there are books we appreciate even as we have questions about one or more elements in them. We depend upon further discussion, thinking, research, and sometimes other opinions to determine how those strengths and shortcomings balance, and to determine whether the book ends up a Choice. If we have questions we’re unable to answer, we try to get informed opinions from expert content reviewers, especially with regard to the depiction of race, culture, and other dimensions of experience we may not be personally qualified to evaluate. Sometimes we disagree about individual titles. Again, we talk about our differences of opinion. If we can’t come to agreement, the book is not a Choice. Ultimately, our goal is to create list of books that we are excited about sharing and can stand behind with confidence. That we can do so year after year speaks to the immense creativity of authors and artists writing and illustrating books for children and teens. 6 CCBC Choices 2016 Organization of CCBC Choices 2016 We organize CCBC Choices into thematic and format categories to help teachers, school and public librarians, and others who work with children and teens quickly find books that meet their needs. We often make refinements from year to year in the organization, in part due to our ever-growing understanding of what our colleagues who work directly with youth want and need, and in part to reflect the books we have chosen in a particular year. This year, we have added an Appendix identifying all informational nonfiction titles (Appendix II). Picture books about people who actually lived have usually been placed in the Historical People, Places, and Events; Arts; or Biography and Autobiography section, unless the narrative is purely fictionalized. Novels set in the past have been placed in one of the Fiction categories. Graphic novels are assessed individually based on content and placed in the category that best suits each individual title depending on whether it is fiction or nonfiction. The subject index can be used to find books about specific topics and in specific genres and formats (“Graphic Novels,” “Historical Fiction,” “Fantasy,” etc.). And, as noted above, Appendix II can be used to identify all the nonfiction books of information. Age Recommendations Our suggested age ranges for each title are meant to be general guidelines based on appeal and accessibility of the content. We know that some children and teens are ready for and will enjoy books recommended for older readers. Our suggested age recommendations cannot substitute for professional judgment and personal knowledge of individual readers, classrooms, and communities. There is considerable overlap of ages in the two picture book categories as well as in the fiction categories. Given the wide range of individual variation among readers, we encourage you to look through both age categories for each genre. For consistency of organization, we have divided the books as follows: • Picture Books for Babies, Toddlers, and Preschoolers: lower age recommendation is three or younger (e.g., Ages 1–4, Ages 3–6) • Picture Books for School-Age Children: lower age recommendation is four or older (e.g., Ages 4–7, Ages 6–10) • Fiction for Children: lower age recommendation

Therefore it is paramount that a healthy environment is required to provide children with the best opportunity to make appropriate adjustment during critical periods because the rapid physical and mental development that children undergo occurs during school age.

However, between outbreaks, the Department of Health became indifferent to the threat of deadly epidemics. Over the following decades, the first school health initiatives were expanded into a comprehensive program. Initially, similar to public health efforts elsewhere, it focused on maintaining sanitary environments and vaccinating children. By the 1900s, with growing knowledge of bacteriology, a more ambitious periodic health inspection program was underway; it involved regular inspections of school children for both infectious illnesses and physical deformities. The program also emphasized education of both students and their families. Under the leadership of Dr. Sara Josephine Baker (1873-1945), the school health program inspected and diagnosed many school children, but by the 1920s concerns were being raised about its effectiveness, as few children had been treated for their ailments.

S. JOSEPHINE BAKER’S FIGHTING FOR LIFE AMY RUBENS ABSTRACT In this essay, I call on scientific persona and autobiographical discourse theory to examine Dr. Sara Josephine Baker’s 1939 autobiography Fighting for Life. Through this framework, I consider how Baker and other U.S. women health professionals conceived of individual identity and collective persona during the early twentieth century. Baker helped to revolutionise well-baby and well-child care in the U.S., and in Fighting for Life, she relates the genesis and evolution of her ground- breaking work. Like her contemporaries, Baker was engaged in the research, practice, teaching, and administration of medicine and public health. Presently, scientific persona has been theorized as a conglomerate of dispositions, practices, and characteristics that are associated with scholar-practitioners of the human and natural sciences; it therefore offers a novel lens for the individual and collective fashioning of women health professionals like Baker whose work traversed disciplines and institutions. By considering how Fighting for Life, as autobiography, facilitates Baker’s conception of self and persona, I show that Baker adopts prevailing personas for women health professionals as well as women working in other fields. At the same time, Baker in her autobiography also emphasizes why and how these models transform in actual practice. Thus, scientific personas tend to emerge as subtle variations of previous forms, while Baker’s autobiography also bears witness to the rise of new personas for women health professionals, as demonstrated by her radical reconfiguration of expert knowledge and scientific motherhood.

The Educator’s Guide can be adapted to suit the needs of your students. Where applicable, this Educator’s Guide has been aligned with Common Core State Standards. About the Book Sara Josephine Baker was a strong girl who loved adventure. But growing up in New York in the late 1800s was difficult. When she lost her brother and father to typhoid fever, she became determined to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor. In Jo’s day, people did not think that women should be doctors, but times were changing, and Jo was at the forefront.

Preston Reynolds, MD, PhD ii iii © Copyright by Rosalind Renee Barber All rights reserved October 2016 iv Abstract By the mid-twentieth century, breastfeeding was no longer the predominant pattern of infant feeding among black mothers, despite the fact that in the early twentieth century, the universal pattern of infant feeding was breastfeeding. Black mothers not only breastfed their children, but during a period in history, they not only breastfed their children, but served as wet-nurses to white infants if needed. By the end of the 1950s, and into the 1960s, the rate of breastfeeding had significantly decreased to as low as 25 percent among black mothers. How did this occur among these mothers, and who taught them about bottle-feeding? The purpose of this research was to identify, describe, and analyze the history of bottle-feeding among black rural mothers in North Carolina during the first half of the twentieth century. Using traditional historical methods and a social history framework, the researcher placed black rural mothers in North Carolina within the larger social context of early twentieth century socio-political history of race, culture, and economics, with a focus on the role of the nurse as it relates to infant feeding.
