This will be achieved through player development, community engagement, sponsor relationship management, high level coaching, quality facilities, a great game day experience and a passion for what we do. Our History An advertisement appeared in the Daily Mercury in 1918 wanting to know if anyone was interested in playing rugby league. The new game, which was a breakaway from rugby union, was taking the southern parts of Queensland and New South Wales by storm. From his advertisement a meeting was called resulting with four teams being formed with the first competition game played in June 1919. The four teams were Railways, All Blacks, Rangers and Magpies. All games were played at the Mackay Showgrounds which at that time was called Alexander Park. The only surviving team from 1919 is Magpies who joined the Mackay and District Rugby league celebrating their 100th year in 2019. From a humble beginning and inexperience of players because of their union background, the league took a while to become established. This was evident in the early intercity games with the Mackay representative side being well beaten by their northern rivals. It was not until 1934 when Mackay finally won its first intercity title winning the Carlton Shield. The Carlton Shield was the fore runner to the now famous Arch Foley Shield that was first played for in 1948. The legendary Billy Paton came to Mackay in 1927 and took charge of all training in Mackay. Bills input soon had the game moving forward and he quickly established league as the premier sport in Mackay. In 1923 Mackay affiliated with Central Queensland Rugby League but later cancelled this arrangement and threw in with North Queensland with which it is still affiliated today. Over the years new teams have joined the competition and others have joined and folded. With the inclusion of Dysart and Moranbah in the competition in 1988 the league changed its name from Mackay Rugby League to Mackay and District Rugby League. Dysart is no longer with Mackay and have gone back to Central Queensland league. With a government promise of $10.5 million to build a new stadium, the Mackay Cutters joined the statewide Queensland Cup competition in 2008. The future looked bright for our game. There have been a number of quality players who were developed and played in Mackay and have gone on to fulfil their dreams in the NRL. Some of which have represented Australia and starred in State of Origin. Since State of Origin, Dale Shearer, Martin Bella, Wendell Sailor, Brett Dallas, Kevin Campion all these players have represented Queensland or Australia. In recent times we have seen Grant Rovelli, Dane Gagai, Ben Barba, Mitch Dunn, Daly Cherry-Evans, Reuben Cotter to name a few, all go on to play in their NRL. Over the years there have been many dedicated officials to run and organise our game. Notable contributions were made by Jack O’Brien, Jack Casey, Beau Taylor, Alex Dent, Col Grant, Aub Kruskie and Greg Sutherland. Indeed, there were many more who worked hard and continue to do so to build our league to its present strength. Padua Old Boys’ Newsletter ISSUE Spring/Summer 2014 “Where there is love and wisdom there is neither fear nor ignorance” St Francis of Assisi THINGS FRANCISCAN Dear Friends Never before has the concept of leadership been more important than it is to- day. We have seen leadership exercised in its different modes, by Pope Francis, and our politicians like Tony Abbott, Bill Shorten and Clive Palmer. The study of leadership has been a focus for our Year 11 students this year. The boys have been exposed to hierarchical, collaborative, consultative, and servant leadership models, as the boys prepared to take on leader- ship roles as 2015 Seniors. Mr. Ben Lowrie, Vice Rector (Pastoral Care) devised a program and a booklet the boys were to complete if they wanted to be Senior Leaders for next year. The applicants spoke to all the staff, and on Year 11 camp to their friends, about the qualities they had that would fit them for leadership responsibilities in a Franciscan school. Mr Out addressed the boys on the Year 11 Camp and pre- pared them for nominating among themselves those they thought would make suitable leaders. Finally, Mr Out choose the following boys as leaders in 2015: College Captain - Tom Fall. Vice-Captain - Jack Peoples House Leaders - Finbar Delbridge, Harrison Pankhurst, Oscar Baker, Michael Hinds, Matthew Hurley, Ryan Pitts, Ethan Figueiredo, Jacob Smith, Rhys Kelly, Zachary O'Donnell, Patrick Benstead, Michael O'Shea The other leaders caring for other aspects of College life are (Committees) - Jack Dickson, Zachary Hughes, Karl Garufi and Kyle Britto. Four of the boys had their fathers attend Padua! As 'Franciscans’ we all celebrate in a special way the birth of Jesus, as we recall Saint Francis building the first crib at Greccio.
