WHO IS BEHIND THE CAMERA? The cinema of Giorgio Mangiamele Silvana Tuccio Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy August, 2009 School of Culture and Communication The University of Melbourne Who is behind the camera? Abstract The cinema of independent film director Giorgio Mangiamele has remained in the shadows of Australian film history since the 1960s when he produced a remarkable body of films, including the feature film Clay, which was invited to the Cannes Film Festival in 1965. This thesis explores the silence that surrounds Mangiamele’s films. His oeuvre is characterised by a specific poetic vision that worked to make tangible a social reality arising out of the impact with foreignness—a foreign society, a foreign country. This thesis analyses the concept of the foreigner as a dominant feature in the development of a cinematic language, and the extent to which the foreigner as outsider intersects with the cinematic process. Each of Giorgio Mangiamele’s films depicts a sharp and sensitive picture of the dislocated figure, the foreigner apprehending the oppressive and silencing forces that surround his being whilst dealing with a new environment; at the same time the urban landscape of inner suburban Melbourne and the natural Australian landscape are recreated in the films. As well as the international recognition given to Clay, Mangiamele’s short films The Spag and Ninety-Nine Percent won Australian Film Institute awards. Giorgio Mangiamele’s films are particularly noted for their style. This thesis explores the cinematic aesthetic, visual style and language of the films.

Aural Auteur: Sound in the Films of Rolf de Heer. 2 Aural Auteur: Sound in the Films of Rolf de Heer. ABSTRACT. Aural Auteur: Sound in the Films of Rolf de Heer. An interpretative methodology for understanding meaning in cinema since the 1950s, auteur analysis is an approach to film studies in which an individual, usually the director, is studied as the author of her or his films. The principal argument of this thesis is that proponents of auteurism have privileged examination of the visual components in a film-maker’s body of work, neglecting the potentially significant role played by sound. The thesis seeks to address this problematic imbalance by interrogating the creative use of sound in the films written and directed by Rolf de Heer, asking the question, “Does his use of sound make Rolf de Heer an aural auteur?” In so far as the term ‘aural’ encompasses everything in the film that is heard by the audience, the analysis seeks to discover if de Heer has, as Peter Wollen suggests of the auteur and her or his directing of the visual components (1968, 1972 and 1998), unconsciously left a detectable aural signature on his films.

MEDIA RELEASE 12 FEBRUARY 2014 SYDNEY FILM FESTIVAL SUBMISSIONS CLOSING Entries close Thursday February 27, 2014 Filmmakers across Australia and around the world have just over two weeks to finalise their submissions for the 61st annual Sydney Film Festival, which is set to offer up the best in world cinema from Wednesday June 4 until Sunday June 15, 2014. Entries across all submission categories will close at Close Of Business on Thursday February 27, 2014, and will need to be submitted through FilmFestivalLife. Festival Director Nashen Moodley said, "We are thrilled with the number of submissions that have come in so far and are looking forward to selecting the best of the best entries to screen at the 61st edition of the Festival.” “Entries have come from far and wide, with strong submission numbers being seen across all categories including features, short films and documentaries. We encourage all interested filmmakers to wrap‐up their projects over the coming week and submit their films for consideration.” Last year, out of the total entries submitted, 192 films were invited to the Festival, screening to more than 140,000 attendees over 12 jam‐packed days and nights. A highlight of the 2014 program will be the Australian short film competition which, in its 45th year, is the oldest short film competition in Australia. Since 1970, the competition has served as a unique spring board for acclaimed Australian film talent, launching the careers of multiple international award‐winners including Chris Noonan (Babe), Don McAlphine (Moulin Rouge), Jack Thompson (Sunday Too Far Away) and Phil Noyce (Rabbit‐Proof Fence), among others.

The Way of the Warrior Realising the Mythic Warrior-hero in the Action genre and in Australian Cinema By Craig Proudley (Bachelor of Screen Production, Griffith University) A feature film screenplay and exegesis submitted for the requirements for the award, Master of Fine Arts (Research) Principal Supervisor: Dr Sean Maher Faculty of Creative Industries Queensland University of Technology 2018 1 Keywords Screenwriting theory, feature film, character, warrior, genre, archetype, myth, structure, plot 2 Abstract This project utilises Creative Practice as research. It explores warrior-hero archetypes in the Action genre; creates and includes these archetypes in the original Australian screenplay Behold a Pale Horse; and discusses their influence on the screenplay’s development. Together, this creative project and accompanying exegesis seek to interrogate some of the inherent codes, tropes, and conventions associated with the Action genre. Moreover, the exegesis seeks to develop and deliberate on character archetypes derived from myth. It also explores their deep association with concepts and archetypical features within the Western genre—the origin of the Action genre. By using Creative Practice as research, the work consists of a detailed analysis of successful Australian films that have featured attributes of the warrior-hero. This practice-led examination is conceptually critiqued against the work of story theorists such as mythologist Joseph Campbell and screenwriting analyst John Truby. These critiques are used to highlight the nuances of the warrior-hero, their relationship to Campbell’s Hero’s Journey model, and the necessary components of this archetype’s deployment in a screenplay within the Action genre. Tested against the generic origins of the Western genre, and using the Australian Bush Myth as a cultural fabric, this analysis and critique is then deployed in the development of the Creative Practice.
