    Chapter # 1 Introduction Mobile applications (apps) have been gaining rising popularity dueto the advances in mobile technologies and the large increase in the number of mobile users. Consequently, several app distribution platforms, which provide a new way for developing, downloading, and updating software applications in modern mobile devices, have recently emerged. To better understand the download patterns, popularity trends, and development strategies in this rapidly evolving mobile app ecosystem, we systematically monitored and analyzed four popular third-party Android app marketplaces. Our study focuses on measuring, analyzing, and modeling the app popularity distribution, and explores how pricing and revenue strategies affect app popularity and developers’ income. Our results indicate that unlike web and peer-to-peer file sharing workloads, the app popularity distribution deviates from commonly observed Zipf-like models. We verify that these deviations can be mainly attributed to a new download pattern, to which we refer as the clustering effect. We validate the existence of this effect by revealing a strong temporal affinity of user downloads to app categories. Based on these observations, we propose a new formal clustering model for the distribution of app downloads, and demonstrate that it closely fits measured data. Moreover, we observe that paid apps follow a different popularity distribution than free apps, and show how free apps with an ad-based revenue strategy may result in higher financial benefits than paid apps. We believe that this study can be useful to appstore designers for improving content delivery and recommendation systems, as well as to app developers for selecting proper pricing policies to increase their income.

    Esports – Who are the big players and the likely winners Millennial driven esports continues to grow rapidly. The number of esports enthusiasts worldwide was estimated to be ~165 million in 2018, and for total global viewers, the forecast is ~453 million in 2019. Esports global revenue is forecast to pass US$1b in 2019 and by 2022 the global eSports market revenue is forecast to reach US$1.79 billion growing at a CAGR of 22.3%. The big players in esports Activision Blizzard Inc. (NASDAQ: ATVI) Activision Blizzard owns the popular Overwatch League as well as World of Warcraft, StarCraft, Diablo, and Hearthstone. In 2018 Activision Blizzard signed a multiyear deal with Walt Disney to broadcast the Overwatch League. As of March 2018, it was the largest game company in the Americas and Europe in terms of revenue and market capitalization. Activision Blizzard has several business units: Activision Publishing, Blizzard Entertainment, King, Major League Gaming,and Activision Blizzard Studios. Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL) Alphabet (Google) has a new cloud gaming platform called Stadia. It operates games hosted on remote servers and then streams video content to connected devices, including smartphones, tablets, computers and TVs. Other competitors in the streaming space include Amazon (Twitch), Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft, Tencent, and Alibaba. Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) Amazon’s Twitch leads the online USA streaming market. Amazon acquired Twitch for nearly $1 billion in 2014. Twitch is only a very small percentage of Amazon’s massive revenue. Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: EA) Electronic Arts is an American video game company headquartered in California. It is the second-largest gaming company in the Americas and Europe by revenue and market capitalization.

    State of West Virginia Office of Technology Policy: Acceptable Use of Instant Messaging Issued by the CTO Policy No: WVOT-PO1010 Issued: 11/24/2009 Revised: 12/22/2020 Page 1 of 4 1.0 PURPOSE This policy details the use of State-approved instant messaging (IM) systems and is intended to: • Describe the limitations of the use of this technology; • Discuss protection of State information; • Describe privacy considerations when using the IM system; and • Outline the applicable rules applied when using the State-provided system. This document is not all-inclusive and the WVOT has the authority and discretion to appropriately address any unacceptable behavior and/or practice not specifically mentioned herein. 2.0 SCOPE This policy applies to all employees within the Executive Branch using the State-approved IM systems, unless classified as “exempt” in West Virginia Code Section 5A-6-8, “Exemptions.” The State’s users are expected to be familiar with and to comply with this policy, and are also required to use their common sense and exercise their good judgment while using Instant Messaging services. 3.0 POLICY 3.1 State-provided IM is appropriate for informal business use only. Examples of this include, but may not be limited to the following: 3.1.1 When “real time” questions, interactions, and clarification are needed; 3.1.2 For immediate response; 3.1.3 For brainstorming sessions among groups; 3.1.4 To reduce chances of misunderstanding; 3.1.5 To reduce the need for telephone and “email tag.” 3.2 Employees must only use State-approved instant messaging.
