First and foremost, I need to clear some Harry Potter related air. Last week during trivia there was a bit of a skirmish because I mentioned Voldemort never graduated Hogwarts. People got upset. I'm sticking by convictions here. He was Tom Riddle during his graduation. Sure he acted under the guise of Voldemort, but he didn't go public with it. Second, thanks to all MMU contributors for getting me my materials early this week. Third, sorry for the lack of chuckles in recent iterations of the MMU. Fourth, here's a sign from a Jimmy John's I really like: FROM BERKELEY The Berkeley Technology Law Journal is soliciting entries for our annual student writing competition. We will accept submissions from J.D. candidates on a wide variety of topics at the intersection of law and technology, including but not limited to: technology and the public interest, privacy, internet law, intellectual property, antitrust, First Amendment issues, entertainment and new media, telecommunications, biotechnology, and cybercrime. The first prize winner will receive $2,000 and be published in the Fall 2016 issue, if it meets the Journal’s publication standards. The submission deadline is March 7, 2016. BTLJ is one of the oldest, most respected, and most cited technology law journals in the country. The journal strives to keep judges, policymakers, practitioners, and the academic community abreast of the dynamic field of technology law. Please post the enclosed flyer and advertise our competition in your weekly bulletin. If you need further information, please e-mail us at [email protected] or visit our website at www.btlj.org. Thank you in advance for helping us run another successful competition. FROM JENN AND ANTHONY Save the date! Barrister's Ball, our annual formal event during the spring semester featuring a sit-down dinner and dancing, will be Saturday, April 2, 2016 at Palais Royale. FROM ME I send enough emails to where I can now incept them. I can just put emails in emails in emails: Check this out: READ THIS IF YOU HAVE AN IOTA OF TALENT If you're reading this, thank you for not deleting it first. I'll get right to it.... Important information regarding Fr. Mike: 1) If you would like to be in an act, you DO NOT have to come to the weekly meetings. Those involve boring administrative things and a good amount of watching YouTube videos while saying "do you think we can pull that off?" You don't need to be there for that. 2) NEW SIGN UP PROCEDURE. If you want to be in an act, just email me, rather than putting it on the Google Doc. The Google Doc is public. Public sign ups can be a disincentive. Just email me the act name, what the act is, how long it's gonna be and what you need for the act. 3) Talented but don't want your own act? Not self-proclaimed talented but still want to contribute? Email me! We have approximately 34 billion videos that we need various extras, actors (maybe singers) for. Each state‘s relative share of these programs is described. The geographic themes, patterns, and images from these programs are analyzed, with an emphasis on identity in five American regions: the Mid-Atlantic, New England, the Midwest, the South, and the West. The dissertation concludes with a comparison of television‘s senses of place to those described in previous studies of regional identity. iii For Sue iv CONTENTS List of Tables vi Acknowledgments vii 1. • Article Cognitive Distortions and Hilarious Implementations of the Principles of Relevance Theory Iché V3
Cognitive Distortions and Hilarious Implementations of the Principles of Relevance Theory: The Case of Coach in Cheers (NBC, 1982-1985) Virginie Iché, MCF, Université Paul Valéry Montpellier 3, EMMA EA 741 Cognitive distortions can result from two major sources: faulty processing of the physical world (mainly due to perceptual disabilities), or erroneous treatment of the information processed (due to flawed or poor inferential disabilities or to psychopathological disorders impacting the interlocutor’s inferential abilities). Cognitive impairments in otherwise healthy individuals—such as sudden vision loss, comprehension difficulties, language impairment, attention or memory disorders, to name but a few—are cause for worry and medical scrutiny, since they are usually the sign of brain decline, depression or even dementia. Additionally, these distortions impact the way speakers interpret their cognitive environment 1 and result in unconventional behavioral or discursive reactions. Coach, one of the main characters of the first three seasons of the American sitcom Cheers (1982-1985), displays many cognitive misfires over the episodes—all of which take place (almost exclusively) in a bar in Boston, run by a former baseball player named Sam Malone and tended by Ernie Pantusso, nicknamed “Coach” because he used to be a coach. Coach’s cognitive abilities are repeatedly shown to be flawed—he is unable to understand non-literal utterances, has recurrent memory lapses (even concerning his own name) and has a hard time analyzing his environment. The canned laughter that follows Coach’s cues suggests the cognitive impairments he suffers from and the discursive consequences these distortions have on the situation and the dialogue, are nothing to worry about though—they even prove to be one of the sitcom’s comic features.

Watermelons, Tee Shirts and Giorgio Armani: Eight-and-a-Half Epigrams on Italian-American Culture Ron Scapp At the close of the evening in which Bill Clinton was nomi nated the Democratic presidential candidate, he entered the con vention hall at Madison Square Garden a la JFK and thanked everyone, including "magnificent Mario," for this great moment. Earlier that night, Governor Mario Cuomo of New York State addressed the Democratic Party and all those across America watching the convention coverage on television. In a speech that once again demonstrated his oratorical prowess, Cuomo was transformed (at least for that political moment) from what Clinton had previously identified (in confidence to Ms. Flowers) as a "real Mafia-type" to what Tom Brokaw of NBC News exclaimed was nothing other than the "Italian prince of American politics." This dual-image of the crude, brute-like gangster and the passionate, respected sovereignty highlights an important aspect of the con tradictory representations of Italian-American culture while it also repeats a pattern to be found in many racist stereotypes, namely, the binary-imaging of a particular (ethnic) group.

  • The Gospel According to Cliff Clavin
The Gospel According to Cliff Clavin Epiphany 4 + Luke 4:31-371 + Pastor Petri A Christian Approach to Know-It-Alls You might know Sue Ann Nivens of the Mary Tyler Moore Show, or Cliff Clavin of the sitcom rerun Cheers. If not -if you’re too young- you do know someone like these TV characters—folks who have an answer to everything, and who bless you with unwanted expertise. It’s that one person in your life (outside of Mom) that suggests a better way to remove stains, consistently corrects your grammar, and blurts out the punchline that ruins your story. These people are “know-it-alls,” and they drive us crazy. But why? In today’s Gospel, even Jesus faced such a person. Mind you, the man in his case was more than just a show-off; he was demon possessed. I’m not saying that all wiseguys are demonic. One or two probably aren’t. I am saying a spiritual engine drives our discourse, and when it goes bad, we should ask why, for Satan often uses the unsuspecting in evil ways. He especially feels devilish delight when we blindly look past him and blame his schemes on the Sue Ann Nivens and Cliff Clavins we know. So what is our response to know-it-alls? Let’s turn to our text. [THE LOVE OF POWER (4:31-34)] We find Jesus some time after he was ejected from Nazareth. But if Jesus walked away from his hometown, he did not walk away from preaching. On this Sabbath, in Capernaum, folks were astonished by his teachings, until one man spoiled it.

VOLUME 22 I NUMBER 2 I SUMMER 2000 upwellings MJCHJGAN SEA GRA NT COLLEGE PROGR ARCHIVES Dive Into History MICHIGAN NAMES TENTH UNDERWATER PRESERVE Autumn of 1887 was a dangerous time to be on Lake Michigan. A violent October storm caught two ships off guard. The two-masted schooner Havana foundered and sank just short of the harbor at St. Joseph. The same storm hit the schooner City of Green Bay, driving the ship ashore near South Haven and leaving only one survivor. Today, both wrecks lie at the bottom of southern Lake Michigan. The wrecks are two of the dive sites in the new Southwest Michigan Underwater Preserve. The preserve was officiallydesignated on Nov. 11, 1999 and is Michigan's tenth. The initiativeto seek designationbegan several years ago when former curator Ken Pott of the Michigan Maritime Museum in South Haven and several local divers recognized the significance of the area's underwater resources and formedthe Southwest Michigan Underwater Preserve Committee. With assistance fromMichigan Sea Grant, committee members submitted a proposal fordesignation to the State of Michigan in 1991. Michigan Sea Grant has been instrumental in helping coastal communities establish and promote underwater preserves since 1980. The Southwest Michigan Underwater Preserve extends along the Lake Michigan shoreline from approximately the Indiana border to just north of Holland, Michigan.
