This covers the period from the first public demonstration of an early form of the technology until the official launch of a full high-definition BBC service. The assessment is achieved via an analysis of four key factors. Chapter One covers the first of these, the private individuals working on television, with an emphasis on the publicity-hungry efforts of John Logie Baird. The second chapter investigates the public institutions, most particularly the BBC and the Post Office, which would eventually be of great importance to television’s ongoing development. Chapter Three covers the reporting of the developments in television by the popular press, allowing us to gain an insight into broader attitudes towards television. The final chapter considers the content of the first official broadcasts, which demonstrate how television was ultimately implemented. The study argues that television’s development was not pre-determined, and that its placement under the control of the BBC as a part of its public service broadcasts was not inevitable. This forms part of the wider question of what was expected from television, and how people’s attitudes toward it changed. This is answered through use of new empirical research, based on original documentation and an extensive survey of press reports. The findings of this research question many presumptions about early television’s development and the subsequent pre-war service. Radio's very first play was broadcast from Station 2LO London on the 15th November 1922. The day after Broadcasting England first began and it was heard in the children's programme but the north region can probably boast the first adult play written for wireless. L. du Garde Peach was the author. It came from the British Broadcasting Company's Metrovix studio and was broadcast by Station 2ZY. By the start of the 1930s far more Northerners were hearing plays than seeing them in the theatre. They were produced by the likes of Jan Bussell, Cecil McGiven and by Edward Wilkinson. The radio dramatic feature became the invention and hallmark of Geoffrey Brideson and Frances Dillon, Olive Shapley and Joan Littlewood all working from North region. By the 1940s James R Gregson had started a school for Radio Playwrights at the Leeds Studios. No history of North Regional Broadcasting would be anywhere near compete without BBC Regional Drama's most distinguished name, that of Alfred Bradley who's with me now. 0:01:19 Alfred you joined in 1959? As part of this we seek to ensure quality and value for money for licence fee payers and to challenge BBC management to use everything at their disposal to deliver both. An area where this is particularly complex is the salaries paid to on-screen and on-air talent. During the course of 2006, press reports about presenters’ salaries aroused industry and public concern and led some people to question the BBC’s approach to the talent it employs. This debate was still live when the Trust was established as the BBC’s governing body in January 2007. It was and has remained a topic raised by the public with Trustees during our appearances on radio phone-ins and at public meetings in all parts of the UK. Against this background the Trust commissioned an independent review, conducted by Oliver and Ohlbaum Associates Ltd (O&O), to provide an in depth examination of the BBC’s use of on air and on screen talent. We posed O&O three specific questions: • How do the size and structure of the BBC's reward packages for talent compare with the rest of the market? • What has been the impact of the BBC's policy on the talent market, particularly in relation to cost inflation? • To what extent do the BBC's policy and processes in relation to investment in, and reward of, talent support value for money? We are publishing O&O’s report which seeks to answer these questions, the BBC management’s response to the points it raises and our own judgements informed by this evidence.

Sign- up sheets are on bulletin boards outside of Rooms S5 and B1. Basketball Cheerleading Tryouts will be held on Monday, November 18th from 3:00-6:00 in the 9/10 cafeteria. Pick up atryout packet from Coach Marchetti in the Green Gym outside the girls locker room. You must have a physical dated after June 1, 2019 to try out.
