O objetivo desta publicação é divulgar as pesquisas científicas desenvolvidas no âmbito do DLO, tornando-as acessíveis a um maior número de pessoas, não somente alunos da USP, mas qualquer leitor interessado em temas de culturas orientais, em uma linguagem clara e didática. Este livro abrange dez capítulos de temas variados. São estudos de literatura, tradução, arte gráfica, pintura, língua, história, identidade cultural. O que eles têm em comum é tomar como seu objeto de estudo os povos do Oriente. Neste volume especificamente estão contemplados estudos sobre as culturas árabe, israelense, japonesa, coreana, armênia e chinesa. Fazemos a seguir uma breve apresentação dos capítulos que compõem o livro. “O colar de Avicena e dos amantes: os limites da medicina na literatura árabe amorosa” de Pedro Ivo Dias Secco propõe a leitura de uma narrativa de amor do Livro das Mil e Uma Noites à luz da ciência médica, mostrando como a narrativa dialoga com os saberes medicinais dos médicos Avicena e Arrazi, o primeiro dos séculos X e XI, e o segundo dos séculos IX e X, e também com a obra Fedro de Platão. “A sultana Sherazade, tecelã das noites, e a narrativa à beira do precipício” de Fabiana Rubira também toma como objeto o mesmo clássico da literatura árabe, o livro das Mil e Uma Noites, para analisar a narradora Sherazade, que se perpetuou no imaginário de diversas culturas do mundo, sejam orientais ou deize crespim pereira ocidentais, como ícone da narração de estórias. Neste texto, a autora nos mostra como Sherazade corresponde à figura do narrador que narra à beira do precipício, ou seja, para salvar sua própria vida e a de outras pessoas. “Um olhar pós-sionista sobre a história e a identidade de Israel na década de 1990” de Gabriel Steinberg toma como tema a narrativa histórica e a identidade cultural judaicas. Sob uma perspectiva crítica que permeia um texto muito claro e explicativo, o autor elucida como a história da luta pela criação do Estado de Israel foi escrita sob o viés do heroísmo. Contudo, com o revisionismo histórico das décadas de 1980 e 1990, os novos historiadores negaram a história oficial, baseada em mitos sionistas segundo eles, e promoveram uma reescrita da história, dando origem a calorosos debates na sociedade israelense, sobre o Holocausto, a relação com a população árabe, e a marginalização por parte da ideologia sionista de grupos étnicos judaicos oriundos dos países árabes e muçulmanos. Em “O tradutor como mola propulsora de novos sentidos: Miyuki-chan entre o Japão e a América”, Thyago Coimbra Cabral e Carolina Tomasi adotam como objeto de estudo os mangás (quadrinhos japoneses), mais especificamente o título Miyuki-chan no País das Maravilhas, para tecer reflexões sobre o processo de tradução destas publicações para outras línguas do Ocidente, como o português e o inglês. Sob uma perspectiva discursiva, que analisa os enunciados e os enunciatários que são os leitores destes quadrinhos, os autores demonstram como esta tradução constitui um trabalho complexo, em que os tradutores têm de lidar com um texto permeado de referências tipicamente japonesas. “A ideologia ‘moderna’ não-ocidental na fundação da dinastia coreana Joseon: Diálogo com o pensamento de Kim Young-oak” de Yun Jung Im e Jung Mo Sung constitui um outro trabalho deste volume sobre narrativa da nação, desta feita, a Coreia do Sul. Os autores explanam como durante o século XX predominou entre os coreanos uma visão negativa do seu passado, em particular da dinastia Joseon (1392~1897), vista como responsável pelo atraso e pobreza do reino, e incapaz de incorporar a modernidade; e como esta visão mudou, a partir do final do século, com o rápido crescimento econômico e desenvolvimento tecnológico ocorrido no país. Dialogando com algumas teses de Kim Young- oak, um dos pensadores mais ativos e controversos na Coreia atualmente, o texto objetiva romper com a “historiografia colonialista”, propondo uma reinterpretação “pós-colonial” da ideologia da dinastia Joseon e do seu caráter “moderno” não-ocidental. 8 prefácio Dois outros capítulos deste volume adotam como objeto de estudo a cultura coreana. “Gisaeng: As mulheres habilidosas da Coreia” de Laura Torelli de Barros Lopes nos apresenta uma classe de mulheres conhecidas como gisaeng, que existiu durante as dinastias Goryeo (918–1392) e Joseon (1392–1910). Recrutadas das classes baixas da sociedade e integrantes de uma instituição responsável por educá-las em literatura, música e dança, as gisaeng tinham como função entreter homens da classe nobre (yangban) em festas e banquetes por meio de seus dotes artísticos. A autora nos mostra como, para além disso, essas mulheres tinham um papel fundamental tanto na manutenção da sociedade confucionista da época, quanto na divulgação e manutenção da cultura tradicional coreana. “Quanto mais coreano, mais internacional: Artes plásticas e identidade nacional na Coreia do Sul do século XX” de Choi Suji

Ha has also starred in several movies including the 2009 box office hit HAUNDAE, and has won numerous acting and popularity awards throughout her career. Also starring in the film is Korean actor Chun Jung-myung who is best known for his lead roles in the 2015 drama series HEART TO HEART and RESET (2014).

Following Michael Lowy’s analytical and historical distinction between Liberation Christianity (emerging in the 1950s) and Liberation Theology (emerging in the 1970s), this paper seeks to problematize the historical projects of democracy and human rights, particularly in relation to the praxis of Liberation Christianity and the reflection of Liberation Theology. Liberation Theology emerged across Latin America during a period of dictatorship and called for liberation. It had neither democracy nor human rights as its central historical project, but rather liberation. Furthermore, Liberation Christianity, which includes the legacy of Camilo Torres, now seeks to ‘defend democracy’ and ‘uphold human rights’ in its ongoing struggles despite the fact that the democratic project has clearly failed the majority of Latin Americans. Both redemocratization and ‘pink tide’ governments were not driven by liberation. At the beginning of the first Workers’ Party government in Brazil, Frei Betto – a leading liberation theologian – famously quipped ‘we have won an election, not made a revolution’. Rain or shine, however, the preparations for AKSE activities continue. On 21 August, 2008 the Fifth Korean Studies Convention for Graduate Students in Europe will begin, this year to be held in Leiden. Originally this was not an AKSE activity, the graduate students themselves taking charge of the entire organisation together with local teachers. This will not radically change, but AKSE will every year at the end of July include a request for funding of the convention of the following year to the Korea Foundation in its request for other activities and when necessary encourage graduate students to organise a convention. This will facilitate the work of the graduate students who are organising next year’s conference and promote continuity. Preparations are also under way for the 2009 AKSE Biennial Conference in Leiden.

Uma visão da América Latina. ∗∗ Guillermo Kerber Resumo A luta pela justiça e libertação encontra-se no centro dos movimentos e das reflexões teológicas latino-americanas há décadas. De que modo os movimentos sociais, os líderes políticos, os teólogos e os cristãos tratam atualmente os desafios da mudança climática? Como eles os relacionam com o contexto global? O presente artigo, baseado numa apresentação feita pelo autor para uma audiência nórdica européia, apresenta a gênesis e a matriz das teologias latino-americanas e alguns de seus principais expoentes, como Leonardo Boff, Juan Luis Segundo e Gustavo Gutierrez. Destaca também os novos empreendimentos que permitem uma abordagem dos assuntos relacionados às mudanças climáticas, chamados de teologias indígenas, eco-teologias, teologia e economia e teologia eco- feminista, construídos a partir das publicações de teólogos como Boff e Ivone Gebara. Em seguida, o autor destaca alguns dos principais componentes dessa relação, enfocando o imperativo ético de justiça climática, a renovada teologia da criação e a dimensão espiritual da abordagem. Bridled Tigers: The Military At Korea’s Northern Border, 1800–1863 Abstract The border, in late Chosŏn rhetoric, was an area of pernicious wickedness; living near the border made the people susceptible to corruption and violence. For Chosŏn ministers in the nineteenth century, despite two hundred years of peace, the threat remained. At the same time, the military institutions created to contain it were failing. For much of the late Chosŏn the site of greatest concern was the northern border in P’yŏngan and Hamgyŏng provinces, as this area was the site of the largest rebellion and most foreign incursions in the first half of the nineteenth century. This study takes the northern border as the most fruitful area for an inquiry into the Chosŏn dynasty’s conceptions of and efforts at border defense. Using government records, reports from local officials, literati writings, and local gazetteers, this study provides a multifaceted image of the border and Chosŏn policies to control it. This study reveals that Chosŏn Korea’s concept of border defense prioritized containment over confrontation, and that their policies were successful in managing the border until the arrival of Western imperial powers whose invasions upended Chosŏn leaders’ notions of national defense.
