Inevitably associated with its most prominentauthors, Ivan Efremov and the Strugatskybrothers, the sf of the Thaw was in fact the work of a large creative communitythat includedmany other writers as well, among them Sever Gansovsky, Vladimir Savchenko, Olga Larionova, Valentina Zhuravleva,Gennadi Gor, Ilya Varshavsky,Vadim Shefner, Rafail Nudelman, AriadnaGromova, and Kir Bulychev. A generationof Anglophonereaders was introducedto some of their works when, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, a few publishing houses, led by the UK-based Macmillan, embarked on an ambitiousproject of publishingmajor works of Soviet sf, primarilyof the Thaw cohort. Several volumes of the Strugatskys' oeuvre appeared in English translations,as well as some stories and single novels by others.' The translation project was typical of the internationalistmood of the English-speakingcultural atmosphere of the time, when works of the Latin American boom, of Japanese and African fiction, and eccentric European writers like Lem and Calvino appeared on bookshelves in unprecedented numbers.Translations of Soviet sf, however, were doubtlessalso driven by the wish to further the "spirit of detente," the pause in the Cold War inspired mainly by the threatof nuclear war, the passion for space exploration, and the drive for consumer goods-shared by the people of the US and the USSR, and, not incidentally, characteristic inspirations for sf. Soviet sf also spoke to Western readers' desire for otherness. At a time when Western sf was itself booming with experimentsin form and social imagination,Soviet sf represented an alternativetradition altogether, an ethical-literaryenvironment far different from the fast-forwardtechno-modernity of most Westernand Japanese sf. Later (indeed, at the time many of the translationsfinally appearedin print), as the Brezhnev regime clamped down tight on all forms of opposition, there was a wish to see Soviet sf writers as low-key dissidents, one step away from samizdat and persecution. In the West, we read the Thaw writers in the frarneswe had ready for them. And before we could really get to know them, the favorablemoment passed. A few of the Strugatskys'novels that were still in the pipeline were publishedin the mid-1980s. Then it was over. Importantlater works, like the Strugatskys' Lame Fate (1986), TheDoomed City (1988), and Burdenedby Evil (1988), and Efremov's TheHour of the Bull (1970), have not seen light in English. Aside froma few academicsand connoisseurs, there were few takers.At this writing,not one of the translationsis in print.As the historicalSoviet Union passesinto memory, and-at leastfor mostWestern readers-fades even from there,there is goodreason to tryto gaina newunderstanding of thatmovement, one of themost original attempts to frameimaginary futures out of thesubstrate of bureaucraticdespotism. As RomanArbitman shows us in the memoir publishedin this issue, Russianwriters themselves return to it for inspiration. For Westerners,the sf of the Thawoffers, throughits alternativefutures, a privilegedway of understandinga society whose present was already alien to us. To understandthe roleof sf in theculture of theThaw, we mustestablish its context. In the past, criticshave tendedto takeone of two approachesto the Thaw writers. Some hopedto find evidenceof an oppositionalassertion of Marxisthumanism against the inhumanity both of Westernmonopoly capitalism and SovietStalinism. They constructed Soviet sf as a partnerin the New Left projectof socialistreform. Others expected the Thawcohort to be courageous dissidents,closer in spiritto contemporaryfantastic satirists like Sinyavski, Zinoviev,and Voinovich,than to mere craftersof sf. Neitherof these is an entirelyfalse stereotype.Many of theThaw writers were faithful Marxists and Communists(they were often instrumental, however, in showingthat these are not identicalconcepts, just as revolutionand utopia are not) who took Khrushchevat his word when he promiseda reformof socialismand the emancipationof sciencefor the goodof humanity.Many were also persecuted for theirwriting, either overtly prevented from publishing altogether, or forced to publishwork that was fatallycompromised. A few of the Strugatskys'works were indeedpublished in samizdatform by an emigrepublisher. But,as Arbitman'sand Erik Simon's essays make clear, Thaw sf was in fact a popularliterature that addressed the feelingsof a largesector of the Soviet populationin theKhrushchev and early Brezhnev eras. It spokeespecially to the youngintelligentsia-students, young scientists and engineers, and humanists for whom science representedfreedom from Stalinistsuperstition. This new intelligentsiawas beingencouraged to takea leadingrole in the transformation of Sovietsociety into a technologicallyadvanced one, andeven to leadit intoa shiningCommunist future based not on hollowphrases but material-scientific achievements.For a generationunburdened of Stalin,witnessing the Space Age, believingin the promiseof gradual(albeit minimal) improvements in personal life, sf representeda potentsynthesis of ideologyand science, of personaland social happiness.Utopia, which had inspiredthe classic sf writersof the revolutionaryperiod, and had been outlawedby Stalin,once againbecame topical. As Khrushchev'sCommunist Party itself incorporatedutopian imaginingsinto its 22ndCongress, the scientific intelligentsia was givenlicense to dreamabout engineering social-and personal-happiness. The Thaw. Establishingdates for the Thawis not a simplematter. Since every act of liberalizationat this time was inspiredby reactionagainst Stalinism and the "cult of personality," a reasonable end-date for the Thaw is April 1968, when Brezhnevannounced to the Plenumof the CentralCommittee that "consequences of the personalitycult" had been officially eliminated(Rothberg 236). There is little dispute about the main aspects of the Thaw. Khrushchev understoodquickly after rising to power that the Soviet Union was dangerously backwardcompared to the technologicaland economic development of the West. The populationwas exhaustedand demoralizedafter years of war, tyranny,and deprivation.Khrushchev initiated new policies that were diametricallyopposed to Stalin's. He encouraged science education, decentralized industrial and educational institutions, and opened the country to Western scientific ideas. Quantumphysics, relativity, cybernetics, and genetics-all of which had been proscribed by Stalin as "bourgeois science"-were incorporated into the curriculum.Khrushchev's interest in science was purelypragmatic; he saw it as the only means to specific goals: nucleararms, a space-program,and above all, highly efficient economic (especially agricultural)production. The policy produced obvious successes. The Sputniklaunch in 1957, and Yuri Gagarin's orbital flight in 1961, both the first achievementsof their kind, were spectacularselling points for the Soviet system, at home and abroad.The emphasis on science led to the constructionof special Science Cities that were to be devoted to scientific research and development. (The first and largest of these, Akademgorodok,near Novosibirsk,was establishedin 1958.) Khrushchev also

This was when the “Generation of the Sixties” (шестидесятники) was beginning to rise in prominence. It was an exciting development for those of us who admired Russian literature and were appalled at the crushing of creativity brought on by Stalin’s enforced “socialist realism.” I read Vasya’s Starry Ticket with great interest, particularly since it seemed to deal with the same theme as the American writer J.D. Salinger did in his The Catcher in the Rye—a disaffected adolescent who runs away from humdrum reality to what he imagines will be a more glamorous life elsewhere. I then began to follow the stories Vasya published in Yunost’. “Oranges from Morocco” was one that impressed me. Much later, he told me that the story was inspired by an experience while he was in school in Magadan. The original title had been “Oranges from Israel.” He was instructed to replace Israel with Morocco in the title after the Soviet Union broke relations with Israel following the 1967 war. Although I was a young diplomat not much older than Vasya, my academic specialty had been Russian literature and I was eager to meet as many Soviet writers as possible. In fact, one of the reasons I entered the American Foreign Service was because it seemed, while Stalin was still alive, one of the few ways an American could live for a time in the Soviet Union and thus have direct contact with Russian culture.

From time to time, in the course of our century, here and there one could hear voices nominating this or that writer for the status of the Great Russian Writer, purveyor of the tradi- tion. These voices were coming from the critical establishment and from Soviet officialdom, as well as from the intelligentsia itself, with a frequency of roughly two great writers per decade. During the postwar years alone – which have lasted, blissfully, so far – a minimum of half a dozen names have filled the air. The forties ended with Mikhail Zoshchenko and the fifties started with the rediscovery of Babel. Then came the thaw, and the crown was temporarily bestowed upon Vladimir Dud- intsev for his Not by Bread Alone. The sixties were almost equally shared by Boris Pasternak’s Doctor Zhivago and by Mikhail Bulgakov’s revival. The bet- ter part of the seventies obviously belong to Solzhenitsyn; at present what is in vogue is so-called peasant prose, and the name most frequently uttered is that of Valentin Rasputin. Officialdom, though, it should be noted in all fairness, happens to be far less mercurial in its preferences: for nearly fifty hears now it has stuck to its guns, pushing Mikhail Sholokhov.

    Soviet-Indian Coproductions: Ali Baba as Political Allegory by MASHA SALAZKINA Abstract: This essay considers the history of Soviet Indian coproductions focusing on Ali Baba and 40 Thieves (1980) as a political allegory over the fate of the multination state. It addresses the formal utopian character of the fi lm and the excessive threat of sexual violence in the song-and-dance numbers. he subject of this essay is the little studied phenomenon of the Soviet-Indian cinematic coproductions. While giving a general outline of the history of these coproductions, I focus primarily on the most commercially successful of these joint efforts, Ali Baba and 40 Thieves (Alibaba Aur 40 Chor/Priklyucheniya Ali-Baby Ti soroka razboinikov, Latif Faiziyev and Umesh Mehra, 1980), henceforward Alibaba. I argue that the fi lm contains a political allegory expressing anxiety over the fate of the multination state; that anxiety lies beneath the formal utopian character of the fi lm, which attempts to show the constitution of a new community on the screen and to defi ne the role of its political subject in the face of crime and governmental corruption. I will address these issues through discussing the directors’ choice of the material (a story from One Thousand and One Nights, or The Arabian Nights, as it is better known in English); the narrative structure of the fi lm; performance histories of the Indian and Soviet actors; and, fi nally, through a reading of the excessive threat of sexual violence concentrated in the fi lm’s song-and-dance numbers. Alibaba, I con- tend, is of interest not only due to the formal and institutional hybridization of two autonomous cinematic traditions, Indian and Soviet, but also as a cultural object which displays a shared anxiety over the role of the state as its existing political and economic order moves palpably toward the brink of collapse.

Modernizing rhetoric emphasized not only these spatial and material transformations, but also the promise of full-fledged communism’s looming arrival. This transformational ethos necessitated a renewal of direct attempts to remold humanity. Gender equality—or, at the very least, removing bourgeois strictures on women—remained a partially unfulfilled promise. Technological advances and the development of Soviet industrial capacity offered a new means of profoundly altering the lives of Soviet men and women. As other scholars have noted, Soviet women were the most obvious targets of these campaigns, but they were not alone in these projects. This dissertation argues that the Soviet state also directed intensive campaigns to remodel male consumptive and bodily practices in order to rid them of politically and socially destructive tendencies, making them fit for the modern socialist civilization under construction. Rooted in, but divergent from, Bolshevik novyi byt campaigns and Stalinist kul’turnost efforts, Soviet authorities actively sought to craft productive male citizens of a modern mold freed of the rough and coarse habits associated with working-class and village masculinities. Many of men targeted in these campaigns fell short of these stated aims.

    SOVIET CINEMA: ART AND POLITICS FROM THE AVANT-GARDE TO THE RETURN OF THE STALINIST REPRESSED PROF. DANIEL SCHWARTZ RUSS 395 WINTER 2021 COURSE DESCRIPTION The history of Soviet cinema traces the conflicting ideologies and social anxieties of the USSR. This course aims to acquaint students with these ideologies and anxieties through the films of major and minor Soviet directors. It offers a broad survey of the pivotal transformations of Soviet cinema from the pre-Soviet silent era through the Russian avant- garde (1920s), Socialist Realism (1930s and 40s), New Wave (1950s and 60s), Stagnation (1970s), Perestroika and the fall of communism (1980s). Special attention will be given to women and minority filmmakers including Larissa Shepitko, Kira Muratova, and Sergei Parajanov. Key questions we will ask include: How does film function as propaganda or entertainment? How does it foster a multi-ethnic Soviet community? What are the political implications of a film’s stylistic choices? By the end of the course, students will be able to situate Soviet films in their cultural, historical, and theoretical contexts. Elaine MacKinnon Abstract This study examines a facet of Gulag history that only in recent years has become a topic for scholarly examination, the experiences of children whose par- ents were arrested or who ended up themselves in the camps. It fi rst considers the situation of those who were true “children of the Gulag,” born either in prison or in the camps. Second, the paper examines the children who were left behind when their parents and relatives were arrested in the Stalinist terror of the 1930s. Those left behind without anyone willing or able to take them in ended up in orphanages, or found themselves on their own, having to grow up quickly and cope with adult situations and responsibilities. Thirdly, the study focuses on young persons who themselves ended up in the Gulag, either due to their connections with arrested family members, or due to actions in their own right which fell afoul of Stalinist “legality,” and consider the ways in which their youth shaped their experience of the Gulag and their strategies for survival. The effects of a Gulag childhood were profound both for individuals and for Soviet society as a whole.
