New Renovations Have Begun at Ascension Manor in Philadelphia, PA Official Publication of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia VOL. 71 - No. 15 SEPTEMBER 5, 2010 ENGLISH VERSION New Renovations have begun at Ascension Manor in Philadelphia, PA After years of planning and preparation, Metropolitan-Archbishop Stefan Soroka along with members of the Board of Directors of Ascension Manor reached settlement to renovate Ascension Manor on August 16, 2010. On August 19, 2010, meetings were held with residents of Ascension Manor to discuss the new renovations that have begun. Each apartment will receive new treatments; the main floor of each building Msgr. Peter Waslo and will be reconfigured to create the best possible environment for the Metropolitan Stefan at settlement. current residents and future residents of Ascension Manor. In addition two Fitness Rooms, a Computer Learning Center, a Meditation Room, an Arts and Crafts Room, an updated Doctor’s Suite, and the development of 20 additional Mobility Units are also planned. September 5, 2010 2 85 YEARS AS A RELIGIOUS SISTER Sister Sozonta Izkiw, SSMI celebrated her 85th anniversary as a Sister Servant of Mary Immaculate on August 7, 2010 at Sloatsburg, NY. A Divine Liturgy was celebrated by Metropolitan Stefan Soroka, Bishop Paul Chomnycky, OSBM, and Rev. Evhen Moniuk. Bishop Paul offered a homily of reflection on the giftedness of Sister Sozonta’s life as a Sister Servant of Mary Immaculate. Joining their Provincial, Sister Michele Yakymovitch, and the Sister Servants of the Province of Immaculate Conception in the USA were the Superior General of the SSMI from Rome, Sister Janice Soluk, SSMI and the Provincial and a number of Sisters Servants of the Canadian Province. Sister Sozonta served in many capacities throughout her 85 years as a Sister Servant of Mary Immaculate. She was one of the earliest pioneers in the formation of the American Province, administered and taught in many schools, taught catechism to children and adults, and was instrumental in the development of the monastic site at Sloatsburg. At her 99 plus years, Sister Sozonta continues to minister by writing letters of encouragement to faithful and through her faithful prayers offered for so many needs presented to her. Also in attendance was Bishop Emeritus Basil Losten. September 5, 2010 5 Holy Dormition Pilgrimage in Sloatsburg, NY Even the weather was perfect as the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate gave thanks for 75 years of ministry in the United Photo: http://ssmi-us.org States and 50 years as the American Province under the patronage of the Immaculate Conception. The culmination of a two year celebration of God’s goodness and blessings, this year’s Pilgrimage began on Friday evening with Moleben to the Mother of God celebrated by Metropolitan Archbishop Stefan Soroka, followed by a barbecue on the back terrace of St. Mary’s Villa, the site of the first Holy Dormition Pilgrimage in 1954. Violin music, performed by Inessa Tymochko Stone, provided a wonderful background for this evening of good food and fellowship. Saturday began with the Divine Liturgy celebrated by Bishop Paul Chomnycky, OSBM, followed by Panakhyda for all the deceased bishops, clergy, sisters and pilgrims who have come to pray and supported the pilgrimage in years past. The new Blessed Josaphata Chapel Shrine was blessed on Saturday morning by Bishop Paul. The chapel shrine will be open to anyone who wants to come and pray to Blessed Josaphata and light a candle. A new icon, written by iconographer, Sviatoslav Makarenko, who also completed the chapel shrine, is hanging inside the chapel and in the near future the relics of Josaphata will be permanently enshrined inside the chapel. During the remainder of the morning and afternoon there was an opportunity to listen to a series of talks about the work of the Sisters Servants, Mary and Marian devotions and the history of the Eastern Church, given by Sister Thomas Hrynewich, SSMI, Rev. Bohdan Danylo, Bishop Paul, Rev. Dr. Ivan Kaszczak, and Rev. Maxim Kobasuk, OSBM. In the evening following the Divine Liturgy, celebrated by Fr. James Spera, and Moleben celebrated by Bishop William Skurla, people were entertained by songs performed by the Pavlyshyn Sisters. The evening ended with a fireworks display which was truly breath-taking. Sunday was a wonderful day of prayer and devotion. Although the sky was cloudy, the rain held off until the end of the last Moleben of the day. Throughout the weekend, 15 youth and young adults participated in the yearly youth campout. This year, through discussion and other activities the young people tried to discover what qualities Jesus possessed and how their own qualities and gifts can be used in following Jesus. The highlight of the weekend was the display of the replica of the Shroud of Turin, which was brought from Philadelphia to St. Mary’s Villa for the Pilgrimage weekend. This is one of nine replicas that have been blessed and sanctioned by the Holy Father. The Shroud replica was touched to the actual Shroud of Turin.

Not only was Soroka, at 49, the youngest cleric ever to be named archbishop of the Philadelphia Archeparchy, the titular head of the U.S. denomination, but he was an outsider. Soroka was born in Winnipeg in Manitoba, Canada. Some American-born clergy and parishioners wondered: “Why not one of our own?” For 17 years, Soroka has presided over a 100,000-member national church in transition. He has led the nation’s Ukrainian Catholics as membership has declined and immigrants from Ukraine have helped to replenish the pews, all while coping with health challenges that include a heart condition and cancer. Earlier this year, he decided to follow his doctor’s advice and resign from his duties. Traska, who moved to Baltimore from Ukraine at age 6, drove more than an hour Nov. 11 from her Keedysville home in Washington County to the church on Patterson Park in Baltimore. Traska celebrated her first Communion and was married at the parish. “We grew up here,” said Traska, who attended St. Elizabeth School, Seton Keough High School and Notre Dame of Maryland University, all in Baltimore. “I love the music.” The Eastern Catholic church is in the Archdiocese of Baltimore but falls under the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia. Metropolitan Archbishop Stefan Soroka and Father Vasyl Sivinskyi, pastor, were two of the five clergy members at the Mass. During his homily – almost entirely in Ukrainian – Archbishop Soroka said “you are called to be like God in all things.” About 250 people, many of whom are fluent in English and Ukrainian, filled the small church during the two-hour liturgy, which was mostly sung and in Ukrainian. A reception, dinner and dancing followed Mass. John Wojtowycz, a parishioner and co-chair of the centennial committee, said the celebration was important “because the core value of your culture and beliefs continue.” Andrij Chornodolsky, a parishioner since moving to Baltimore from Ukraine at age 4, co-chaired the committee. “To me and to the community it really says a lot,” Chornodolsky said of the centennial.

The new metropolitan entered the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Philadelphia, PA, accompanied by thirty-five bishops, including four cardinals, following a procession of 400 children and altar boys throughout the archeparchy and 200 members of the clergy and religious. The Installation Ceremony began with a greeting by His Beatitude Major Archbishop Lubomyr Cardinal Husar followed by the reading of the Papal Bull of appointment from Pope John Paul II by Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, Apostolic Nuncio to the United Installation of Metropolitan-Archbishop Stefan Soroka States. ten years ago on February 27, 2001. No other European country suffered as much as TUkraine, whose currency was devalued by more than 60 percent since its peak of 4.95 hrv per $1 in August 2008. In addition, the country’s industrial production fell by 31 percent in 2009. Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko con- fronted the challenge of minimizing the crisis fallout, while at the same time campaigning for the 2010 presi- dential elections. Bishop John Bura will reside in the former convent addition at St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Seminary in Washington, DC. Bishop Bura’s primary ministry will be to reach out to the many Ukrainian organizations now providing varied services in Washington, DC. He will serve as an ambassador to the State Department and to other federal and state government organizations in matters relating to the interests and needs of the Ukrainian Catholic Church and of the Ukrainian community in Ukraine and in the USA. His Beatitude, Patriarch Sviatoslav, is pleased with Bishop Bura’s willingness to fulfill this need. It is anticipated that our Patriarch and Bishop Bura will develop close ties and contact on matters and needs of our Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Ukraine and worldwide. In addition to these responsibilities, Bishop Bura will assist at the seminary and in the ministerial team approach of the clergy in the parishes in Washington, DC and Virginia.
