The official opening of the Jubilee Year will take place on Sunday, April 7, in Lviv. Also on Sunday, April 7, there will be a Moleben to Blessed Josaphata at Saint Joseph Home – Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate, Mundare, followed by the blessing of icons of Blessed Josaphata and Blessed Martyr Tarsykia. The clergy are invited to include a prayer of thanksgiving for the life and missionary zeal of Blessed Josaphata during this weekend’s Divine Liturgies. “Blessed Josaphata, pray for us” Meditation for the 5th Sunday of Great Fast Our Great Fast Meditations have meditated on the sinfulness of living with feelings of entitlement. Today’s Gospel tells of how two apostles who blatantly asked Jesus to sit on either side of him when he comes into his glory. It brought out feelings of animosity among the other ten apostles. Is this not true of life – our life, when we strive for being regarded as in some way superior and thereby more entitled to life’s privileges than others? It occurs among all of us, between people of all ages, ethnic groups and races, people with different levels of education, amidst hierarchy, clergy, faithful, and so on. It causes dissension, envy and brutality amidst us. Jesus was calling his apos- tles to a change of mind, to live with a new vision. It was not easy for them to understand that greatness meant becoming a servant of others. Like the apostles, we are slow to grasp Jesus’ vision of joy and peace, slow to ac- cept the truth that sets us free. Can we grasp the hand of Jesus Christ with His promise that we will not walk in darkness if we follow Him? Jesus taught that “whoever wants to rank first among you must serve the needs of all” (Mk 10:45). Our Holy Father recently reminded us not to be hypocritical in the celebration of our faith. As we make plans for Easter celebrations, plan to make the entire journey with Jesus Christ, by participating in the Ves- pers and Exposition of the Holy Shroud on Good Friday and entering through His sacrifice into the celebration of Pascha, the glorious Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I urge you not to be hypocritical with God by choosing to enjoy the blessing of Easter foods and participating in Easter Sunday services without having entered through the door of Christ’s passion and death on the cross. Holmes, Staff Writer When Pope John Paul II named Bishop StefanSoroka to lead the Ukrainian Catholic Church in the United States, the appointment was groundbreaking and controversial. Not only was Soroka, at 49, the youngest cleric ever to be named archbishop of the Philadelphia Archeparchy, the titular head of the U.S. denomination, but he was an outsider. Soroka was born in Winnipeg in Manitoba, Canada. Some American-born clergy and parishioners wondered: “Why not one of our own?” For 17 years, Soroka has presided over a 100,000-member national church in transition. He has led the nation’s Ukrainian Catholics as membership has declined and immigrants from Ukraine have helped to replenish the pews, all while coping with health challenges that include a heart condition and cancer. Earlier this year, he decided to follow his doctor’s advice and resign from his duties. On Sunday, a crowd of more than 600 filled the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Northern Liberties to honor him and say goodbye. “I apologize for the shock of my decision, It took me three months to heed my cardiologist’s advice,” said Soroka, resplendent in sky blue vestments as he stood before the congregation. “I feel great sadness having to say farewell to you, people I have grown to love, respect and appreciate.

  • St. Michael the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church Celebrates Centennial
St. Michael the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church celebrates centennial By Elizabeth Lowe [email protected] Twitter: @ReviewLowe Irene Traska was overcome with emotion after a liturgy celebrating the centennial of St. Michael the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church. Traska, who moved to Baltimore from Ukraine at age 6, drove more than an hour Nov. 11 from her Keedysville home in Washington County to the church on Patterson Park in Baltimore. Traska celebrated her first Communion and was married at the parish. “We grew up here,” said Traska, who attended St. Elizabeth School, Seton Keough High School and Notre Dame of Maryland University, all in Baltimore. “I love the music.” The Eastern Catholic church is in the Archdiocese of Baltimore but falls under the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia. Metropolitan Archbishop Stefan Soroka and Father Vasyl Sivinskyi, pastor, were two of the five clergy members at the Mass. During his homily – almost entirely in Ukrainian – Archbishop Soroka said “you are called to be like God in all things.” About 250 people, many of whom are fluent in English and Ukrainian, filled the small church during the two-hour liturgy, which was mostly sung and in Ukrainian. A reception, dinner and dancing followed Mass. John Wojtowycz, a parishioner and co-chair of the centennial committee, said the celebration was important “because the core value of your culture and beliefs continue.” Andrij Chornodolsky, a parishioner since moving to Baltimore from Ukraine at age 4, co-chaired the committee. “To me and to the community it really says a lot,” Chornodolsky said of the centennial.

  • A Turbulent Year for Ukraine Urbulent Was the Way to Describe 2009 for Ukraine, Which Plunged Into Financial Crisis
No. 3 THE UKRAINIAN WEEKLY SUNDAY, JANUARY 17, 2010 5 2009: THE YEAR IN REVIEW A turbulent year for Ukraine urbulent was the way to describe 2009 for Ukraine, which plunged into financial crisis. No other European country suffered as much as TUkraine, whose currency was devalued by more than 60 percent since its peak of 4.95 hrv per $1 in August 2008. In addition, the country’s industrial production fell by 31 percent in 2009. Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko con- fronted the challenge of minimizing the crisis fallout, while at the same time campaigning for the 2010 presi- dential elections. Her critics attacked her for pursuing populist policies, such as increasing wages and hiring more government staff, when the state treasury was broke as early as the spring. Ms. Tymoshenko herself admitted that her gov- ernment would not have been able to make all its pay- ments without the help of three tranches of loans, worth approximately $10.6 billion, provided by the International Monetary Fund. Her critics believe that instead of borrowing money, Ms. Tymoshenko should have been introducing radical reforms to the Ukrainian economy, reducing government waste, eliminating out- dated Soviet-era benefits and trimming the bureaucracy. The year began with what is becoming an annual tra- Offi cial Website of Ukraine’s President dition in Ukraine – a natural gas conflict provoked by the government of Russian Federation Prime Minister President Viktor Yushchenko and Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko at the heated February 10 meeting of Vladimir Putin. One understands why the stories of Thomas and the Myrrh Bearing Women, but the paralytic? Perhaps our incomprehension is rooted in our modern separation of Pascha (Easter) from baptism. In the early Church, Pascha was considered as the time for baptism. Even now in our Easter Divine Liturgy, in place of the “Holy God” we sing “All those who have been baptized into Christ, have put on Christ.” That might explain why all the Sunday Gospels in the Paschal season after the Sunday of the Myrrh-bearers focus upon water: the Samaritan woman finds Christ by the well, and the blind man finds salvation as he washes in the pool of Siloam. Similarly, the paralytic encounters Christ as he sat by the waters of Bethesda. In all these Gospels, we find water, a clear echo of baptism for those to whom baptism was linked with Pascha (Easter).
