One understands why the stories of Thomas and the Myrrh Bearing Women, but the paralytic? Perhaps our incomprehension is rooted in our modern separation of Pascha (Easter) from baptism. In the early Church, Pascha was considered as the time for baptism. Even now in our Easter Divine Liturgy, in place of the “Holy God” we sing “All those who have been baptized into Christ, have put on Christ.” That might explain why all the Sunday Gospels in the Paschal season after the Sunday of the Myrrh-bearers focus upon water: the Samaritan woman finds Christ by the well, and the blind man finds salvation as he washes in the pool of Siloam. Similarly, the paralytic encounters Christ as he sat by the waters of Bethesda. In all these Gospels, we find water, a clear echo of baptism for those to whom baptism was linked with Pascha (Easter). Lefko METROPOLITAN STEFAN SOROKA RESIGNS AS ARCHBISHOP OF PHILADELPHIA Pope Francis Appoints Auxiliary Bishop Andriy Rabiy as Apostolic Administrator of the Ukrainian Archeparchy of Philadelphia; Accepts Resignation of Archbishop Stefan Soroka effective April 16, 2018 STATEMENT BY METROPOLITAN-ARCHBISHOP STEFAN SOROKA On Monday, April 16th, 2018, the Vatican Information Service announced that the Holy Father has accepted the resignation for medical reasons of Most Rev. Stefan Soroka, Archbishop of Philadelphia for Ukrainians and Metropolitan for the Ukrainian Catholic Church in USA. Pope Francis has declared the Archeparchy of Philadelphia as "sede vacante". Most Rev. Andriy Rabiy has been appointed by Pope Francis as the Apostolic Administrator of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia until the appointment of the new Archeparch. Most Rev. Stefan Soroka was appointed as Metropolitan-Archbishop by His Holiness, Pope John Paul II on November 29th, 2000 and installed on February 27th, 2001. Most Rev. Andriy Rabiy was appointed by Pope Francis as Auxiliary Bishop for the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia on August 8th, 2017. Bishop Andriy, a priest of our Archeparchy, was ordained to the episcopacy by His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk in St. George's Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral in Lviv, Ukraine on September 3rd, 2017. Our heartfelt appreciation is extended to His Holiness, Pope Francis, and to His Eminence Leonardo Cardinal Sandri, Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, and to His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk for their understanding and compassion. We are also grateful to the Holy Father for the confidence he has shown in the abilities of Most Rev. Andriy Rabiy in appointing him as Apostolic Administrator for the interim. I take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the clergy, religious, seminarians and laity of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia. These past seventeen years have been filled with many challenges and blessings, some unique in the experience of the Philadelphia Archeparchy. Success in responding to the varying needs of the Archeparchy and its parishes was achieved with the positive and hopeful participation of clergy, religious and laity enabled by the Grace of God. Most gratifying to me was the personal journey of prayer and fraternity experienced with the clergy, religious and faithful of the Archeparchy. The highlight of my ministry in leadership was experienced when amidst parishioners and their ministers in parish liturgical celebrations, visits, pilgrimages, festivals, and in personal sharing. I was inspired by the dedication of the clergy, religious and faithful and their love for their Church. I am also especially grateful for the fraternity and cooperation shared with my brother bishops of USA, with whom common needs of clergy, religious and faithful were addressed in our regular meetings, and in gatherings of our Church.

Not only was Soroka, at 49, the youngest cleric ever to be named archbishop of the Philadelphia Archeparchy, the titular head of the U.S. denomination, but he was an outsider. Soroka was born in Winnipeg in Manitoba, Canada. Some American-born clergy and parishioners wondered: “Why not one of our own?” For 17 years, Soroka has presided over a 100,000-member national church in transition. He has led the nation’s Ukrainian Catholics as membership has declined and immigrants from Ukraine have helped to replenish the pews, all while coping with health challenges that include a heart condition and cancer. Earlier this year, he decided to follow his doctor’s advice and resign from his duties. Traska, who moved to Baltimore from Ukraine at age 6, drove more than an hour Nov. 11 from her Keedysville home in Washington County to the church on Patterson Park in Baltimore. Traska celebrated her first Communion and was married at the parish. “We grew up here,” said Traska, who attended St. Elizabeth School, Seton Keough High School and Notre Dame of Maryland University, all in Baltimore. “I love the music.” The Eastern Catholic church is in the Archdiocese of Baltimore but falls under the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia. Metropolitan Archbishop Stefan Soroka and Father Vasyl Sivinskyi, pastor, were two of the five clergy members at the Mass. During his homily – almost entirely in Ukrainian – Archbishop Soroka said “you are called to be like God in all things.” About 250 people, many of whom are fluent in English and Ukrainian, filled the small church during the two-hour liturgy, which was mostly sung and in Ukrainian. A reception, dinner and dancing followed Mass. The new metropolitan entered the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Philadelphia, PA, accompanied by thirty-five bishops, including four cardinals, following a procession of 400 children and altar boys throughout the archeparchy and 200 members of the clergy and religious. No other European country suffered as much as TUkraine, whose currency was devalued by more than 60 percent since its peak of 4.95 hrv per $1 in August 2008. In addition, the country’s industrial production fell by 31 percent in 2009. Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko con- fronted the challenge of minimizing the crisis fallout, while at the same time campaigning for the 2010 presi- dential elections.     Official Publication of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia VOL. 75 - No. 22 DECEMBER 07, 2014 ENGLISH VERSION BISHOP JOHN BURA APPOINTED BY METROPOLITAN STEFAN SOROKA AS AMBASSADOR OF UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC CHURCH IN WASHINGTON, DC With the ordination and installation of Bishop Bohdan Danylo as Eparch of St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Parma, Bishop John Bura returns to continue as Auxiliary Bishop of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia. Bishop John Bura will reside in the former convent addition at St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Seminary in Washington, DC. Bishop Bura’s primary ministry will be to reach out to the many Ukrainian organizations now providing varied services in Washington, DC. He will serve as an ambassador to the State Department and to other federal and state government organizations in matters relating to the interests and needs of the Ukrainian Catholic Church and of the Ukrainian community in Ukraine and in the USA. His Beatitude, Patriarch Sviatoslav, is pleased with Bishop Bura’s willingness to fulfill this need. It is anticipated that our Patriarch and Bishop Bura will develop close ties and contact on matters and needs of our Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Ukraine and worldwide. In addition to these responsibilities, Bishop Bura will assist at the seminary and in the ministerial team approach of the clergy in the parishes in Washington, DC and Virginia.
