Temples & Tigers Temples & Tigers - Safari & Biking Vast, remote, rugged and stunningly beautiful; with an incredible array of virtually unknown historic sites and cities, untouched wilderness and unexplored national parks peopled by a host of colorful tribes and communities, CENTRAL INDIA is the ultimate destination for those who cherish the joy of exclusive discovery and exploration in this overcrowded world. Central India, encompassed almost entirely by the state of Madhya Pradesh, has perhaps more incredible surprises for the traveler than any of the other better-known regions of India. Strategically important as the gateway to the south, this vast region with its lush valleys, fertile plateaus and rugged forest covered hills remains, for most travelers, Terra Incognita. For various reasons Central India, known as India’s Tigerland due to the multiplicity of famous tiger reserves remains shrouded from the tourist gaze. Given the way so much of Indian tourism has developed this is, perhaps, a blessing! Highlights: ● Walk among the 9th century world famous Khajuraho temples ● Safari in Panna Tiger Reserve. ● Cycle to Raneh waterfall & along the Panna Buffer Zone ● Visit temples and monuments in 16th c. The idea of economic planning can be traced to 1934, when M. Visvesverayya in his book 'Planned Economy of India', advocated for planning to increase the national income. It was taken up by the Indian National Congress in 1938 when it formed the National Planning Committee under the chairmanship of Jawaharlal Nehru. The Bombay Plan, the People's Plan and Gandhian Plan, provided further impetus in the direction of economic planning. After independence, a Planning Commission was set up in March 1950 by a Cabinet Resolution with the Prime Minister as its ex-officio Chairman to formulate five year plans for the economic development of the country.

Twenty Years Perspective Plan of Tourism for the State of Madhya Pradesh Final Report Vol. I – Main Report Submitted to: The Market Research Division Department of Tourism Ministry of Tourism & Culture Government of India C-1, Hutments, Dalhousie Road New Delhi-110011 February, 2003 JPS ASSOCIATES CONSULTANTS NEW DELHI Twenty Years Perspective Plan of Tourism for the State of Madhya Pradesh Final Report Vol. II – Annexures Submitted to: The Market Research Division Department of Tourism Ministry of Tourism & Culture Government of India C-1, Hutments, Dalhousie Road New Delhi-110011 February, 2003 JPS ASSOCIATES CONSULTANTS NEW DELHI ABSTRACT Twenty year perspective plan for M.P. Tourism This report is based on a study commissioned by the Department of Tourism, GOI, to draw up a twenty year perspective plan for development of tourism in Madhya Pradesh. Madhya Pradesh has a rich past and a number of locations for heritage tourism, the most famous being Khajuraho and Sanchi. It also has a large forest area and nine wildlife sanctuaries. However, Panchmarhi is the only hill station. Madhya Pradesh suffers from poor connectivity, no direct links to many tourist locations and a road network which is in need of urgent improvement. The state tourism suffers from the twin problem of low awareness and low publicity as a tourist destination and poor quality of ‘tourism product’. Poor connectivity and poor infrastructure further aggravate the situation. Although MP State Tourism Development Corporation (MPSTDC) has set up hotels and facilities at all the important (fourteen) tourist locations and the state has in place a forward looking tourism policy with Eco-adventure tourism as its USP, the growth of tourism has been slow.

  • Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh
© Lonely Planet Publications 660 Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh Madhya Pradesh (MP) was India’s largest state until tribal Chhattisgarh broke away in 2000. It’s still a significant chunk of most train rides from Delhi to central India, yet many travellers see little more than its train tracks; a shame for more reasons than having to train it for two days. Khajuraho, Mandu and Sanchi have some of India’s finest Hindu, Islamic and Buddhist monuments. A more lively form of religion is at the ghats (steps or landings) on the Narmada River, one of the seven sacred rivers. There’s also Ujjain, one of the seven holy cities, and the holy island, Omkareshwar. Historical sites include the millennia-old Bhimbetka rock paintings and Gwalior’s lavish Jai Vilas Palace. Among the temple towns, Khajuraho is famous for the erotic carvings writhing across its 10th-century temples. Another historical hotspot near the Agra–Varanasi route is secluded Orchha, where riverside cenotaphs and palaces exude a ‘lost world’ atmosphere matched only by Mandu’s plateau-top tombs. For outdoor enthusiasts there are 1000m-plus peaks, forests and waterfalls at hill station Pachmarhi, and tiger-filled national parks. View the cats from an elephant at Kanha, Bandhav- garh, Panna (site of Kipling’s Jungle Book) and Pench. The distinctive craftwork and colourful markets in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region show tribal communities keeping tradition alive. HIGHLIGHTS Eye with the king of the Indian jungle in the national parks, Panna (p681 ), Pench ( p708 ), Orchha Kanha ( p709 )
