The Venn Group Are Committed to Improving the Life Chances for Young People and Adults Across North and East Yorkshire, Hull, and Northern Lincolnshire 1 2 3 “The Venn Group are committed to improving the life chances for young people and adults across North and East Yorkshire, Hull, and Northern Lincolnshire. We take our responsibilities seriously, and place our students at the heart of all that we do. Each college in the Venn Group prepares young people to stretch their potential and make a real difference in the professions and skills they progress into. The communities we serve are our life blood. We work closely with employers in our region, and with schools and Universities, to ensure that our students enrich the economy, culture and life of their local community. We are proud of each and every one of our students, and of our amazing staff and governors. Together, the Venn Group can make a real difference to our region.” 4 The five members of the Venn Group are independent colleges with an excellent reputation in their local area. The power of the Group lies in our ability to draw upon the skills and resources of our collective membership to gain the best possible outcomes for our students, and ensure that every young person is able to achieve their potential. We believe passionately that all of our students should progress to destinations that provide the best match to their ambition and skills - be that higher education, further training, or directly into employment. By working together, the five members of the Venn Group express their commitment to improving the life chances of young people and their families, and to increasing the capacity of the region to grow and prosper in the future. To achieve this aim, we have a long track record of working collaboratively, and welcome enquiries from organisations who feel that they might benefit from working with us, or who believe they have something to offer the Venn Group that will enrich our collective expertise and experience. Sixth Form Colleges are not school sixth forms, they provide a more mature environment for young people to grow and develop towards adulthood. This environment really helps young people bridge the gaps between school and university or work, developing their self-confidence and their ability to operate in the more adult ways they will need when they go out into the world. This development utilises the expertise of teachers who are specialists in their subject at a high level and can be completely focused on Advanced Level education without the distraction of lower school. This said, sixth form colleges do retain some school-like elements with registers, parents evenings, progress reports, calls home and so on in place. The close tracking and monitoring of progress is a strong and special feature of all sixth form colleges. The combination of specialist teachers, mature environment and close support is, we believe, the reason that students from sixth form colleges are so successful in higher education and employment. 5 The five members of the Venn Group are Franklin College, Grimsby; John Leggott College, Scunthorpe; Scarborough Sixth Form College, Wilberforce Sixth Form College, Hull, and Wyke Sixth Form College, Hull. We have over 150 years’ experience in working with 16 to 19 year olds, and have excellent local reputations for delivering high quality sixth form education and skills based training. By working annual turnover in 2017/18 collaboratively, each member of the Venn Group aspires to become the outstanding provider of sixth form education in their area. by the Department for Education as the best colleges We recruit students from across in their area North and East Yorkshire, Hull, and Northern Lincolnshire. In sharing our considerable strengths and skills, we believe that we offer the best, innovative, and successful students and 660 staff experience of sixth form education for any young person in the region. 6 7 The Venn Group spend around £9.3 million in North and East Yorkshire, Hull and Northern Lincolnshire each year, and £34.2 million on staffing. Our staff and students further boost their local economies with their expenditure. It is estimated that the total value of the Venn Group’s economic contribution to the region during 2017/18 was around £50 million. Within this total, we generated over £11 million in North East Lincolnshire, almost £12 million in North Lincolnshire, over £7 million in North Yorkshire, and about £21 million in Hull and East Yorkshire. In 2017/18, the five sixth form colleges of the Venn Group employed around 660 people, with each member being a significant employer within their local area. The Venn Group works closely with employers and providers of high-quality training to ensure that our students are well prepared for the challenges that lie ahead. Uniquely amongst sixth form providers, we offer innovative and highly successful professional internships, career readiness programmes, and vocational courses with employer-led learning. We encourage all employers to work with the Venn Group. Every organisation who from working with talented, skilled and well-supported young people. The future economic health of the region is actively supported by the Venn Group. We work closely with the Local Enterprise Partnership, local authorities and employer organisations to ensure that our students graduate college with the skills and qualifications that meet the future needs of employers. Students leave the Venn Group colleges and progress into higher education, employment and further training (including a growing number of apprentices in the key economic sectors of engineering, health and digital technologies). 8 The Venn Group colleges have considerable experience in supporting students into a range of destinations once they have completed their qualifications. 10% 12% Further Education 5% Gap Year 6% 17% Not Known 3% 61% Seeking Employment 3% Higher Education Apprenticeship Employment Other We recognise that for some of our students, progression to higher education provides the opportunities and experiences that will equip them for the professions and careers of their choice. Throughout, they demonstrated good communication, numeracy and IT skills, and we would be happy to support them in their careers.” 11 The Department of Education rank the five members of the Venn Group as the best performing colleges in their area. The Venn Group colleges have consistently achieved the highest achievement over the last five years, and our students make the most progress compared with their starting points when joining the colleges. We have considerable proven strengths in successfully delivering advanced and intermediate level qualifications, and have led national innovations in developing a curriculum that allows all young people to thrive and achieve the best possible destinations. We recognise that every student is different, and every member of the Venn Group Level 3 A Level provides a personalised programme of study. We offer opportunities and courses including foundation degree, A levels, BTEC and CTEC vocational programmes at both advanced and intermediate level, and a wide range of optional programmes that broaden Level 3 Applied Vocational our students' experiences and studies. Whilst we offer a diverse curriculum for our students (with far more choice and relevance than any school sixth form can offer locally), we are conscious that our role is not just to meet the immediate economic priorities of Advanced Level Mixed the area – we also need to prepare young people for the professions – for medicine, the law, business and education. The professional development of young people in our areas is vital for future economic success, and the Venn Group are nationally recognised as having innovative and highly successful Level 2 programmes to achieve this Each member of the Venn Group is different. This is part of our strength. We have a wide range of diverse skills, and success at working with sixth form students to help them achieve their potential. By collaborating, we Level 1 can maximise the value that we can add to the education and progress of our students. 12 Venn Group colleges believe in inclusion, and work hard to ensure that they add value to all students (whatever their starting point when they left school at 16).

I enclose information about the role and our College, which I hope you will find of interest. John Leggott College is a successful (OfSTED Grade 2 ‘Good’), 16-19 Sixth Form College, located on a busy but pleasant site in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire. The College is just ten minutes from the M180 which is fed directly from the M18 and then the M1 – you’d be able to commute here quite easily from most of the towns and conurbations in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, including Pontefract, Doncaster, Sheffield, Grimsby, Lincoln and Hull.
