Via Saragat, 1, I-44100 Ferrara Italy ([email protected]) The alluvial plain of Licata (southern Sicily, Agrigento province) has been investi- gated to evaluate the influence of the human activities and that of the climatic changes in the hydrological cycle in terms of qualitative and quantitative impact on the ground- water resources. In this area, the evolution of the Salso river (in Italian ’salty river’) and the coastal dynamics, characterised by consecutive transgresions and retreats of the coast-line, qualitatively and quantitatively influenced the underground water re- sources. In this complex geological contest, also the anthropogenic activities played a crucial role, especially the farming activity as largely testified by the occurrence of numerous greenhouses that cover most of the plain. The analysis of thermopluvio- metric data concerning the last 75 year allowed to obtain inferences on the climatic evolution of this region characterised by a mean annual temperature of about 18 ◦C and mean annual precipitations of only 454 mm. In particular, during the last 24 years a 12 % decrease of the precipitation with respect the previous period of observation is observed together with the increase of the temperature of the air about 1◦C. The research was focused on the unconfined, mainly sandy, aquifer developed in the Qua- ternary deposits of the Licata plain. The water depth of this aquifer is between to 0.3 to locally 5 m from the surface and the principal alimentation occurs via infiltration from precipitations and lateral outflow from the Salso river. The high salinity of the river especially during Summer periods and the intense farming activities played a crucial role for the quality degradation of the aquifer..

A thesis submitted for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2018 School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry ii Abstract Sicily was made the first overseas Roman province between 241 and 212 BC, and became known as the ‘bread-basket’ of the Republic due to the island’s famously fertile farmlands. The island, with its history of pre-Roman conflict, second century slave revolts, and use as a military stronghold in the civil wars of the first century, never dissociated itself from conflict. As such, its construction as a ‘contested space’ was popular in the literature of first-century Rome, employed as a symptomatic topos of the state of Rome – the closer Roman Sicily resembled its pre- annexation state, the greater the perceived threat to the Republic, and vice-versa. This construction of Sicily and its landscape was employed by authors such as Cicero, Diodorus Siculus, and Virgil to great effect, as they engaged with, reinforced, or challenged the major contemporary discourses of imperialism, the impact of civil war, and food security. Cicero’s In Verrem presents its audience with a Sicily that has been purposely constructed to deliver the most damning image of Verres, the infamously corrupt governor of Sicily from 73-71, the most sympathetic and familiar image of the Sicilians, presented as virtuous and stoic farmers, and a Sicily that has been reduced to a war-torn desert under Verres’ rule. Through his construction of Sicily as contested space, Cicero secured his win against Verres in court and demonstrated to his audiences the danger Verres’ actions presented Rome, threatening the stability of the relationship between Sicily and Rome.

The target of the directive is to fix an EC framework for the protection of internal surface water, transition water, coastal and ground water, ensuring pollution prevention and reduction, facilitating sustainable water use, protecting environment, improving water ecosystems and mitigating flood and drought effects. The project, lasted 3 years, was co-financed by the European Community within the LIFE Environment programme. It is worth to notice that W AMARIBAS is one of the first actual implementations of the new directive in Italy and therefore it is an important stage in the progress that will lead, within nine years since the directive establishment, towards the drafting of a management plan and an operating programme for every basin area, taking into account the results of basin characteristics analysis, assessment of the impact on water of anthropic activities and economic analysis of water uses. SUMMARY Confirmation of the presence of Aphanius fasciatus (Valenciennes, 1821) in the hydrographic basin of the river Imera Meridionale (Sicily) . An abundant population of the autochthonous killifish Aphanius fasciatus has been observed in the river Imera Meridionale and in some of its tributaries. It has been thus confirmed the current presence of the species in the area , in spite of the heavy anthropogenic impact which interested the basin of the river itself, and which led to consider A. fas - ciatus as locally extirped . As the observed population is one of the few ones which survived in the Sicilian rivers, and at the light of the high genetic and morphological diversity observed among Sicil - ian Aphanius populations, the survival of the river Imera Meridionale population is of major impor - tance in the frame of the conservation of autochthonous Sicilian fish fauna.

    1 The Guns of Sicily By ‘Sigurd’ Introduction “The Canadian role in Operation Husky, the invasion of Sicily, is yet another story that has been ill told.”1 - Mark Zhulke, Operation Husky The Canadian Army’s campaign in Sicily represented “the first divisional-scale combat operation in World War II... where many officers and men – who would form the backbone of the First Canadian Army in future campaigns and battles – began their transformation from trained neophytes into combat veterans.”2 Consequently, Canadian operations in Sicily provide a valuable insight into Canadian organization and tactics. Unfortunately, any work that does investigate Operation HUSKY focuses almost exclusively on the work of the manoeuvre element with only perfunctory references to fire support. The story of the gunners that fought their way through Sicily needs to be told. Amongst the hills of Sicily, these gunners developed the war winning formula that would allow the Canadian Army to fight its way through Italy and North-West Europe. The intent of this paper is to shed some light on the formidable efforts of the 1st Canadian Divisional Artillery* in Sicily during the summer of 1943. Overview A complete review of the strategic impetus behind the invasion of Sicily, and the machinations that brought 1st Canadian Infantry Division† there is beyond the scope of this paper‡. It is sufficient to say that in the spring of 1943, 1st Canadian Division was ordered to conduct operations in Sicily with a D-day of 10 July, 1943. The months leading up to that date were filled with intensive training and planning in Scotland.
