Gearhart, Advisor In this thesis, I examine six adaptations of the narrative known primarily through William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark to answer how so many versions of the same story can successfully exist at the same time. I use a homology proposed by Gary Bortolotti and Linda Hutcheon that explains there is a similar process behind cultural and biological adaptation. Drawing from the connection between literary adaptations and evolution developed by Bortolotti and Hutcheon, I argue there is also a connection between variation among literary adaptations of the same story and variation among species of the same organism. Performing Shakespeare in Contemporary Taiwan by Ya-hui Huang A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment for the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Central Lancashire Jan 2012 Abstract Since the 1980s, Taiwan has been subjected to heavy foreign and global influences, leading to a marked erosion of its traditional cultural forms. Indigenous traditions have had to struggle to hold their own and to strike out into new territory, adopt or adapt to Western models. For most theatres in Taiwan, Shakespeare has inevitably served as a model to be imitated and a touchstone of quality. Such Taiwanese Shakespeare performances prove to be much more than merely a combination of Shakespeare and Taiwan, constituting a new fusion which shows Taiwan as hospitable to foreign influences and unafraid to modify them for its own purposes. Nonetheless, Shakespeare performances in contemporary Taiwan are not only a demonstration of hybridity of Westernisation but also Sinification influences. Since the 1945 Kuomintang (Chinese Nationalist Party, or KMT) takeover of Taiwan, the KMT’s one-party state has established Chinese identity over a Taiwan identity by imposing cultural assimilation through such practices as the Mandarin-only policy during the Chinese Cultural Renaissance in Taiwan. Both Taiwan and Mainland China are on the margin of a “metropolitan bank of Shakespeare knowledge” (Orkin, 2005, p. 1), but it is this negotiation of identity that makes the Taiwanese interpretation of Shakespeare much different from that of a Mainlanders’ approach, while they share certain commonalities that inextricably link them. This study thus examines the interrelation between Taiwan and Mainland China operatic cultural forms and how negotiation of their different identities constitutes a singular different Taiwanese Shakespeare from Chinese Shakespeare. -

He lacks the name-recognition associated with a Conquerer or a Confessor, and is not the subject of any compelling anecdotes about beaches or cakes which have wormed their way into the popular consciousness. To say Æthelstan is forgotten might be to go too far, but he is certainly not well remembered outside a select audience of Anglo-Saxon illuminati. Professor Foot swims against this current. Even undertaking a biography of Æthelstan is a strong statement of the importance she would assign to him and his reign (which spanned the years 924–39), and her central point in this book is encapsulated by the subtitle: ‘First King of England’. The achievement which lies immediately behind this acclamation is Æthelstan’s conquest, in 927, of the Viking kingdom of York. This victory was just one act in the process by which warrior-kings of the West Saxon dynasty of Ecgberht (802–39) created a kingdom which broadly approximated modern England in extent. The Iconographyof False Friendship By CLIFFORD DAVIDSON THE REALIZATION THAT iconographic tableaux appear at central points in the drama of Shakespeare no longer seems to involve a radical critical perspective. Thus a recent study is able to show convincingly that the playwright presented audiences with a Hamlet who upon his first appear- ance on stage illustrated what the Renaissance would certainly have recognized as the melancholic contemplative personality.' As I have noted in a previous article, the hero of Macbeth when he sees the bloody dagger before him is in fact perceiving the image which most clearly denotes tragedy itself; in the emblem books, the dagger is indeed the symbol of tragedy,2 which will be Macbeth's fate if he pursues his bloody course of action. Such tableaux, it must be admitted, are often central to the meaning and the action of the plays. -

IOI6-35 CANUTE, called the Great, was the younger son of Sweyn, King of Denmark, and Sigrid, widow of Eric the Victorious, King of Sweden. In his charters and upon his coins his name is written Cnut, and sometimes in his charters Knu'O. He is said to have urged his father to the invasion of England in IOI3.1 He sailed with his father and with him landed at Sandwich and thence went to Gainsborough, where Sweyn received the submission of all the Danish part of Eng land, including the Danish burh of Stamford. He attacked London, where he was repulsed. He then marched to Wallingford and thence to Bath, where the ealdormen and thegns of the west made peace with him. The submission of all Wessex completed the conquest of England and Sweyn was acknowledged "full king", 2 but no coins appear to have been issued in his name. Sweyn died in February IOI4. Florence of Worcester records a story which was believed by a majority of the English of the period, namely, that Sweyn hated the memory of St. Eadmund and scoffed at his reputation for sanctity. That at Gainsborough, as he was on horseback, surrounded by his army, St. Eadmund appeared to him and advanced upon him. Sweyn called for help, but the saint pierced him with his spear, he fell from his horse and died that night. A variant of the story is that Sweyn desecrated the tomb of St. -

Anglo‐Saxon 1: AD 410‐AD 1066 Anglo—Saxon Age AD 410—AD 1066 The last Roman soldiers le Britain in AD 410, new selers arrived in ships , the Anglo‐Saxons. They were a mixture of tribes from Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands, the main three tribes were the Angles, Saxons and Jutes. The land they seled was called Angle‐land…. England. Each group of selers had a leader or war‐chief. Powerful leaders became cyning (king) and the strongest of these would claim to be bretwalda (sovereign of Britain). By around AD 600 there were five major kingdoms, somemes at peace and somemes at war with each other. From this me the pagan Anglo‐Saxons began to convert to Chrisanity. The early Anglo‐Saxons were pagans and believed in many gods, much like the Scandinavian Vikings. King of the Anglo‐Saxon gods was Woden (from this comes ‘Woden’s day’ or Wednesday). Thunor (Thursday) was the god of thunder, Frige (Friday) the goddess of love and Tiw (Tuesday), god of war. Burials can tell us a lot about these people. Warriors would be buried with their spear and shield although we may only find the bones and metal parts remaining during excavaon. The graves of women may include weaving tools and jewellry. The Lakenheath Warrior (le) was buried in a wooden coffin with his sword, shield and spear lain on top. He was also buried with his horse. The burial also contained food for the aerlife. The Suon Hoo cemetery site contains burial mounds. One of these, (believed to be Raedwald, King of East Anglia) contained a complete ship (only the outline and rivets survived), the ceremonial helmet (right), metalwork dress fings (below), weapons and silver plate from Byzanum. -

Grace Butkowski Victorian Representations of Mary, Queen of Scots and Elizabeth I The rivalry of Mary, Queen of Scots and her English cousin Elizabeth I is a storied one that has consumed both popular and historical imaginations since the two queens reigned in the sixteenth century. It is often portrayed as a tale of contrasts: on one end, Gloriana with her fabled red hair and virginity, the bastion of British culture and Protestant values, valiantly defending England against the schemes of the Spanish and their Armada. On the other side is Mary, Queen of Scots, the enchanting and seductive French-raised Catholic, whose series of tragic, murderous marriages gave birth to both the future James I of England and to schemes surrounding the English throne. -

King Henry VIII Proof that God Uses Evil for Good When we think of King Henry VIII, we usually don’t think of a Christian man on the front lines fighting for the Reformation. Instead many think the exact opposite, of an evil man full of pride willing to do anything to fulfill his selfish desires. King Henry VIII is a vivid example of God’s ability to take man’s evil nature and provide good for His Church. Studying the history of the English Reformation and King Henry VIII is as much political and social as it is religious. It is necessary to unpack England’s royalty and its social, and religious policies in order to grasp why and how England turned away from the Catholic Church and became the Church of England with strong Reformation theology. Several characters took part in this stage in history, the most prominent being King Henry himself. At the age of 18, Henry became King of England, upon the death of this father, King Henry VII. We must examine some of the political plot at this time. Henry’s brother, Arthur, was first in line for the throne and had been politically joined in marriage with Catherine of Aragon, daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain. However, Arthur died unexpectedly prior to his father. Upon Arthur’s death, King Henry VII agreed to a pre-arranged marriage with young Henry and Catherine, the widow of Arthur. The stage was now set for the first request to the Papacy in Rome. The Papacy nullifies the law of Leviticus 20:21 and gives permission for Henry and Catherine to marry.
