Argentine Art: Selected Sources BiblioNoticias No. 99, March 1999 Editor: Ann Hartness ARGENTINE ART: SELECTED SOURCES Compiled by Laura Gutiérrez-Witt Argentina is a major center for Latin American art where artists thrive, particularly in the vibrant and active cultural milieu of Buenos Aires, but also in the provincial capitals. Known and appreciated around the world, Argentine artists of the twentieth century have consistently absorbed global artistic trends without losing their national identity. Printed works about art and artists are produced by many Argentine publishers: museums, galleries, academic institutions, commercial publishers, and government agencies. This bibliography complements BiblioNoticias no. 94, "Latin American Art: Selected Sources," which lists the more general reference sources covering all or major regions of Latin America. Both bibliographies should be consulted in order to compile a more complete listing of sources on Argentine art. Additional sources for Argentine art can be found in the library catalog under "Art, Argentine" and "Art—Argentina," as well as under medium-specific forms, for example, "Painting— Argentina." El arte moderno desde las “sombras” del peronismo Andrea Giunta Annual Session of the International Seminar Art Studies from Latin America, UNAM and The Rockefeller Foundation, Querétaro, November 1-5, 1997.

  • The Case of Xul Solar Beatriz Sarlo Xul Solar Offers A
Fantastic invention and cultural nationality: the case of Xul Solar Beatriz Sarlo Xul Solar offers a composite profile: avant-gardiste Janus, he produced, as early as 1915 (when painting in Argentina was mostly post-Impressionism, pompier symbolism or late realism à la Courbet), the subtly figurative designs of his water-colors; and, a few years later, the abstract space where floated imaginary creatures among hieroglyphs and inscriptions of esoteric origin. He was an enigmatic protagonist of the artistic renewal in Argentina, the performer of a one-man mise en scène where mystic and magical topics were transposed through a most refined pictorial technique, and, at the same time, a man involved in the challenges that modernity presented to art and culture. In the nineteen twenties the Argentine avant-garde movement rotated around three axis: the open question about nationality and cultural heritage in a country whose demographic profile was dramatically changing due to the presence of thousands of immigrants; the relation to be established with Western art and literature; and the research of new formal means in order to draw a clear limit vis à vis the literary past, on one hand, and the contemporary realist and socialist aesthetics, on the other. Xul Solar, together with Jorge Luis Borges, Oliverio Girondo, Ricardo Güiraldes and Emilio Pettoruti, are the names that range in the very front of these battles of modernity. Criticism has read Xul Solar in the irrefutable key of his humorous and sophisticated use of religious mythologies, mystical traditions and astrology.(1) This essay will place him in the scene of the Argentine cultural debate.(2) Without overlooking the significance of his work in the unfolding of a fantastic imagination, I will try to read his paintings and inventions as a response to the three main questions that haunted Argentine avant-garde.

You have my admiration and my heart. Acknowledgements In the course of researching and writing this dissertation I relied heavily on the hospitality, kindness, and good advice of many. My advisor Andrea Giunta was forever generous with her time and enthusiasm, guiding me through the most difficult aspects of writing and research. She helped me keep this project in perspective and showed me how to make productive, scholarly interventions into history writing. For that, she has my eternal gratitude. I am honored to call Jacqueline Barnitz a mentor as well as a cherished friend; she always believed in the importance of my chosen research topics and taught me how to navigate around potential pitfalls in the field. I found I could rely on Ann Reynolds to challenge me to think differently and better about the issues that interested me most in this dissertation. She and Cherise Smith also provided invaluable career advice in the last few years.
