PROCESSING NOTE

The Publications collection is composed of a group of published or printed materials including: example publications, publications documenting museum and auxiliary board activities, and printing proofs. The original arrangement of this group of records has been maintained in series 1-3; the records were refoldered and rehoused in acid-free boxes. This collection was augmented during processing with materials drawn from the SFMOMA Research Library and from several museum departments.

An effort was made to collect a complete run of all museum publications, which are divided up into three further series, based on publication type: Periodicals, Other Publications, and Exhibition Publications. Some materials known to be published were not available. Periodicals (Series 4) is missing calendars produced in January- June and November-December of 1935, and all of 1936. Also missing are several issues of At the Modern , volume 3 of Architecture and Design Forum , and the catalogs of the 1998 and 2000 MAC Auctions. Several exhibition catalogs (Series 6) are also needed, including Richard Hamilton: New Work (1996), Souvenirs of Savings: Miniature Bank Buildings from the Collection of Ace Archit (1996), and Disrupture: Postmodern Media (1997).

Oversize material was removed from its context, then flattened and stored in oversize boxes or rolled for storage in tubes. Whenever oversize material was removed, an indicator was placed in the file and the oversize folders are noted alongside the original folders in the container list.

Due to frequent changes in the sizes of publications, most series are not housed sequentially in document boxes; larger materials were removed and boxed separately. Volumes too large to fit in standard archival boxes have been individually boxed, numbered and shelved as volumes. Chronological order of publication has been maintained in the container list, and the physical locations of the materials noted. Each container size is numbered differently, as follows:

Box 1, 2, 3 … Letter size (12.25 x 10.25 x 5”) Box A1, A2, A3… Legal size (15.25 x 1 0.25 x 5”) Box B1, B2, B3… Tall legal (15.5 x 12.5 x 5”) Box C1, C2, C3… Small flat box (17.25 x 11.5 x 3”) Box D1, D2… Large flat box (20 x 16 x 3”) Tube 1, 2… Tube (4 x 4 x 45”) Vol. 1, 2… Volume (size varies)

5 SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Publications collection is a group of published material generated by the SFMA and SFMOMA from 1935 to the present, and represents a cross-section of the types of materials used as invitations, announcements, brochures, gallery guides, calendars, programs, and posters in addition to published monographs, periodicals, and exhibition catalogs.

The collection documents every public aspect of the museum’s activities, including exhibitions, fundraising, education, special projects, anniversaries, and social events. The diversity of the publications reveal the breadth of the museum’s programming and the changes in focus of the programs and design of the publications made by each of the museum’s directors.

The publications are topically divided into the types of publications, events or activities they represent, or based on the organizing group. Records are arranged into six series: Example Publications, SFMA/SFMOMA Activities, Women’s Board and MAC, Periodicals, Other Publications, and Exhibition Publications. The bulk of the collection is composed of exhibition materials.

6 SERIES DESCRIPTION

Series 1: Example Publications, 1944-2008 Boxes A1-A3

Arranged alphabetically.

The Examples publications series contains a representative sample of all types of publications produced by the museum. Includes publications that have not consistently been preserved by the museum, such as announcements, invitations to parties, invitations to previews, and mailings. There is significant overlap and duplication within the Examples and with the other series covering the same time period, but the original Examples divisions were maintained to show a cross-section of publication types during these years.

Series 2: SFMA/SFMOMA Activities, 1948-1997 Boxes A4-A6; Box D1, folders 8-10; Tube 1

Arranged alphabetically.

The SFMA Activities files were subdivided from an originally labeled “SFMA” series, and include: Administration and Reprints, Art in Cinema, Educational Programs, and Membership. The “SFMA Activities – Educational Programs” files contain announcements and programs for the types of activities that are classified as Educational Programs in the Administrative Records. Educational Programs include individual lectures and lecture series announcements, performance programs and announcements, film program announcements, such as the Man and Art series, schedules of films for children, and various events not related to exhibitions in the museum.

A set of publications and their proofs were found for 1953-1954, 1962-1965, 1967- 1968, and 1969-1971. These are arranged by the type or name of final document produced. Additional files documenting the proofing and printing processes for several distinct publications from 1961 through 1964 were housed separately, but relocated to the Publications collection. The proofs for the California Artists’ Cookbook (1982) were also added to this series.

Series 3: Women’s Board and Modern Art Council, 1947-2002 Boxes A7-A8; Box D1, folders 11-13; Tube 1

Arranged by organizing group and chronologically.

The Women’s Board and Modern Art Council files contain invitations, announcements, and programs related to events sponsored by the Women’s Board and MAC. Events and activities include: Champagne Suppers, the Rental Gallery, Tour de Décors, travel groups, Christmas parties, the Art Sandwiched In lecture series, scavenger hunt, and auctions.

Series 4: Periodicals, 1935-ongoing Boxes 1-6; Box A10; Boxes B1-B2; Boxes C1-C4

7 Arranged by publication title.

Contains publications regularly generated by the museum to inform and educate its members, staff and the general public. Includes calendars, bulletins, newsletters, journals from individual curatorial departments, annual reports, and auction catalogs.

Series 5: Other Publications, 1942-2006 Box 7

Arranged chronologically.

Consists of material published by the museum and its auxiliary groups in connection with special projects such as the program for the 50th anniversary celebrations and brochures for the new museum campaign, or publications on art movements such as Fifty California Artists or Trends in 20 th Century Art . Also contains guides and catalogs for exhibitions not held in the museum, such as the Golden Gate International Exposition and the 1981 show of Philip Guston’s works organized by SFMOMA for tour in Mexico.

Series 6: Exhibition Publications, 1935-ongoing Boxes 8-25; Boxes A11-A23; Box D1, folders 1-8 and 14; volumes 1-75; Tube 1

Contains announcements, entry blanks, invitations, gallery guides, posters, catalogs, and brochures produced by SFMOMA regarding exhibitions hung in the museum. The series is divided into two subseries: Exhibition Ephemera and Exhibition Catalogs.

Subseries 6.1: Exhibition Ephemera, 1948-2008 Boxes A11-A12; Box D1, folders 3-8; Tube 1

Arranged alphabetically by folder title.

Consists of announcements, entry blanks, invitations, gallery guides, posters, and brochures produced by SFMOMA regarding exhibitions hung in the museum. Since these publications were produced in the course of organizing and promoting each exhibition, they depict the museum’s working methods as well as documenting each individual exhibition and associated events like openings. Also includes files documenting the announcements, preview invitations, and entry blanks specifically associated with the annual exhibitions organized by the San Francisco Art Association and San Francisco Art Institute. A small group of files containing brochures and gallery guides was moved from the SFMA Activities series to join similar material in this series.

Subseries 6.2: Exhibition Catalogs, 1935-ongoing Boxes 8-25; Boxes A13-A23; Box D1, folders 1-2 and 14; volumes 1-75; Tube 1

Arranged by exhibition start date.

Includes exhibition catalogs produced by SFMOMA relating to exhibitions held in the museum. Catalogs often provide intellectual context for the works shown, as well as a check-list of the exhibition. This series only contains SFMOMA publications; a set of catalogs for all exhibitions shown in the museum can be found in the SFMOMA Research Library.
