Moore: Future Visions: Queer Utopia in Steven Universe Since it premiered on Cartoon Network in 2013, Steven Universe has garnered both praise and criticism for its portrayal of queer characters and its flexible approach to gender. Created by Rebecca Sugar, a bisexual and nonbinary artist, the show tells the story of Steven, a half-human, half-alien teenager raised by a trio of alien parental figures called the Crystal Gems. Steven’s adventures range from helping his friends at the local donut shop to defending Earth from the colonizing forces of the Gem Homeworld. Across its five seasons, this series has celebrated many queer firsts for animated children’s content. In 2018, Steven Universe aired one of the first cartoon same-sex wedding scenes (“Reunited”), and in 2019, it became the first animated show to win a Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) award, taking home the prize for Outstanding Kids and Family Programming.

MARK TWAIN'S DEVELOPMENT OF THE NARRATIVE AND VERNACULAR PERSONA TECHNIQUE ,r~ ... : tI;' A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH AND THE GRADUATE COUNCIL OF THE KANSAS STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE OF EMPORIA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS POR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS By JAY H. BOYLAN .-/ August. 1969 111:' -< J J _ ! j/ Approved for the Major Department r I, itbo... .- Approved for the Graduate Council tf ~~ r)Q8.... ~:rL'09 "'0 .....,t) PREFACE Mark ~qain was such a dominant personality that he literally commanded the full attention of his day with his ac tivities. It has been said that he was the world's most well~known figure in his time. Twain's speaking tours in America and abroad helped him to create and maintain his image as a kind of representative American personality; in many ways he seemed the embodiment of the new man, the new spirit. After Twain's death in 1910, the force of his personality was so strong that it continued to overshadow his works. The early theories of Brooks' therefore were in the best traditions of biographical criticism and in the best traditions of Twain criticism; Brooks and others kept the emphasis on the man, Twain, rather than on his works. Brooks' idea, that Twain was a "divine amateur" who was thwarted by a psychological wound, is obviously in keeping with the forces of that time. What is not so obvious is tha.t Twain's supporters such as Devoto were, also, a part of this same tradition. Devoto defended Twain by trying to show from Twain's life that he was not psycho logically "wounded." The whole period of the 1920's and 1930's was an unfortunate one for Twain criticism because it was dominated by Mark Twain with a concomitant de-emphasis of his works and their merits.

Forgotten Tales A thesis presented to the faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts Lindsey A. Fischer April 2017 ©2017 Lindsey A. Fischer. All Rights Reserved. 2 This thesis titled Forgotten Tales by LINDSEY A. FISCHER has been approved for the department of English and the College of Arts and Sciences by Patrick O’Keeffe Assistant Professor of English Robert Frank Dean, College of Arts and Sciences 3 ABSTRACT FISCHER, LINDSEY A., M.A., April 2017, English Forgotten Tales Director of Thesis: Patrick O’Keeffe This collection of short stories retells fairy tales and myths to bring out themes of feminism, heroism, and forgotten voices. The critical introduction is an investigation into the history of fairy tale retellings, and how we can best write works that engage in a conversation with other stories. This intro also argues for a return to the oral tradition, which is how these original fairy tales and myths were told, in order to evoke the spontaneity of oral performance. This project is interested in story-telling, from our childhood to adulthood, as I create a new canon of fairy tales for grown-ups. 4 DEDICATION To my parents and brothers for their love and support, to E. for believing in me, and to the wonderful literary nerds in Ellis 8 for the inspiration 5 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project would never have happened without the advice and guidance of my adviser, Patrick O’Keeffe. Thank you for all the editing and encouragement.

  • UNIVERSITY of CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Queering
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Queering Black Gay Historiography: Performance, (Mis)Identifications, and Possibilities A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Theatre/Performance Studies by Thomas Howard Fitzgerald 2013 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Queering Black Gay Historiography: Performance, (Mis)Identifications, and Possibilities. by Thomas Howard Fitzgerald Doctor of Philosophy in Theatre and Performance Studies University of California, Los Angeles, 2013 Professor Sue Ellen Case, Chair This dissertation will examine black gay theatre/ performance in the United States from 1970 to 2010. My intent is to establish a genealogy of black gay performance by situating performance strategies of visibility employed by black gay men in the late 20th century utilizing various performance genres such as revue, theatrical biography, the “event” and history play. Specifically, I am interested that this writing act as a discursive in interrogating the historiography of the tactics of black gay visibility in contrast to and in concert with traditional heterosexual black masculinities where the overall effort was to distinguish a queer black aesthetic separate from the white gay project. My research is necessarily involved with both gay and black performances in this period, since a study of black gay performance practices cannot be pulled away from the black experience in America. Identity politics is the conduit to self- empowerment for black and gay liberation movements, for similar reasons. Accordingly, the project study will concentrate on three areas: (1) social trends and historiography, (2) select black gay performances in this period, and (3) theories of queer and racial identification.
