Ocala Regional Medical Center is one of the 3 main teaching hospitals for the UCF residency programs. At our program, you will find a unique experience that hybridizes a university program that takes place in a community setting with plenty of opportunities to operate, creating the best of both worlds. In addition, Ocala Regional Medical Center is a Level II Trauma Center, which will expose you to a wide variety of trauma and general surgery. Residents are encouraged to research, and support is provided with our team of statisticians. Highlights include a robotic surgery training curriculum, including a simulation lab featuring the Da Vinci robot to practice on. You will have unique experiences and opportunities to travel and learn from master surgeons from Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, Tampa, and Gainesville, with provided housing. As a new program on the rise, our past graduates have gone on to pursue fellowship at institutions such as Boston University, University of Texas, Rush University, and Miami Cancer Institute. Case volume for each chief resident was well over 1,500 cases upon graduation. Our program is designed to produce competent and highly skilled surgeons, capable of independent practice after residency training, as well as the foundation for subspecialty training. The program has many unique features that will contribute to the next generation of surgical leaders, including the skill and experience of master surgeons who are eager to train and mentor young surgeons for lifelong careers. I invite you to take a look and get to know our program better. Dr. Darwin Ang will oversee all resident rotations, electives, and research at the base hospital, ORMC, a teaching hospital with accredited ACGME residency programs. He will coordinate and communicate with the five local or Site Directors regarding ORMC residents rotating at any of those five sites: North Florida Regional Medical Center (Integrated Site - Gainesville, FL), West Marion Community Hospital (Integrated Site - Ocala, FL), Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital (St. Petersburg, FL), Methodist Hospital (San Antonio, TX), and AdventHealth Tampa (Tampa, FL). Four of the five outside sites are established teaching hospitals with an ethic and milieu conducive to learning, teaching, and mentorship. The hospital has all of the required medical and surgical specialties as well as support services to make teaching and learning at this site ideal. The facility has state of the art equipment where residents will gain clinical expertise and a diverse patient population where residents will gain clinical experience to ultimately practice independently. The educational experience at Ocala Regional Medical Center will include faculty coverage (supervision) available at all times to the residents. A supervising faculty attending will be available to provide both indirect supervision by phone at all times with direct supervision available if required. Volumes and variety of clinical experience will be monitored by the program director through a regular review of the residents patient encounters and procedure logs to insure each resident is receiving the experience necessary to prepare him/her for successful completion of the program and the independent practice of General Surgery.
