With a hammer total of over $4M the sale was the world’s largest Burgundy-only auction, demonstrating that the market for well-stored top Burgundy continues to be strong, generating global interest and many new bidders. We hosted events throughout the weekend in Brazil, Hong Kong and Chicago, and witnessed strong hammer prices for top producers including Rousseau ($186,683 total sold), Jayer ($149,495 total sold) and Coche-Dury ($145,408 total sold). We also continued our tradition of bringing not only great wines to Chicago, but also our favorite food. Chef Johan Bjorklund from Le Bistro de L’Hôtel de Beaune joined forces with Chicago-based culinary legend, Chef Jean Joho, to create a fabulous meal at the unparalleled Everest, featuring Paul Hart the remarkable wines of the Wilson Daniel portfolio, tasted with the guidance of Jack Daniels. The CEO wines included Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Lefl aive, and Olivier Bernstein. We were Hart Davis Hart Wine Co. also thrilled to see so many friends at Everest and again in the auction room at TRU. Now on to present business: this May auction is diverse, and packed with stunning collections. Our consistent focus at HDH is offering well-stored wines with exceptional provenance and this auction certainly delivers. We will open the fi rst session (8:30am Friday, May 15th) of this auction with the collection of a long-time friend with whom we have worked for over twenty years. This collector will be missed by many. I deeply cherish my memories of incredible lunches while packing consignments, always featuring his favorite Barolos. He cared deeply about provenance and had state-of-the-art cellars that maintained ideal storage conditions. The collection (lots 1-171) refl ects the diverse tastes of a passionate collector, punctuated by an amazing selection of Bordeaux in large format bottlings. The selections of Italian and US wines complete this special sale-opening consignment. Our second session (8:30am Saturday, May 16th) will also start with an exciting offering from a repeat consignor boasting perfect cellar conditions (lots 1324-1446). The parcel includes a library- like selection of Bordeaux with particular breadth in the top-notch 2000 vintage. The multiple case lot selections of fi rst growths and other rarities are offered in original wooden cases and would make excellent cornerstones for a growing collection. I must also point out the extraordinary and unprecedented offerings of Sine Qua Non in this auction. These wines have attracted the attention of critics and collectors for their bold and individualistic styles and the truly unique aesthetic captured in combination of label, bottle, capsule and case. Though showcased throughout the auction, one of the standout SQN offerings reads like an encyclopedia of this unique winery (lots 1447-1653). Preceded by a 15 lot parcel of Screaming Eagle, this Sine Qua Non trove comprises over 90 lots and includes rarities from Manfred and Elaine Krankl such as Tant Pis! (lot 1538) and Hospice du Rhone (lot 1550). The session continues with a consignment from dear friends and long-time collectors who were forced to thin out their remarkable collection to make room for the incoming 2009 and 2010 Bordeaux (lots 1654-1781). These wines were purchased and stored with great care. We hope that you will join us in Chicago at TRU for this very special auction. If you are not able to join us, please remember that you can register and submit absentee bids or bid live online during the sale via auction.hdhwine.com or via our app. We hope to see you at the auction! For the sake of this wine list, our natural wines are wines that are grown or produced by winemakers implementing organic & biodynamic practices, mostly unfined & unfiltered, and the least amount of sulfur added at the end of bottling, or no sulfur added at all. These wines are complex and interesting much like our food and greatly complement our menu. These wines are alive, have character and evolve very quickly over time in the glass. They are meant to be enjoyed with food, with us here at Alter.
