Third Brochure FISU Conference Gwangju 2015 The Impact of University Sport on the Global Community · University Sport and its eco-environmental impact · University Sport, humanity and social development · University Sport and innovation through information technology · University Sport and global education developments July 11-14, 2015 Honam University, Gwangju, Republic of Korea http://fisuconferencehonam2015.com Welcome Message Dear Participants, Dear Friends, On behalf of the International University Sports Federation and its Education Committee, it is a pleasure and honour for me to extend a warm welcome to the representatives of all the countries and universities participating in the 2015 FISU Summer Universiade Conference, to be held at Honam University in Gwangju, Republic of Korea. Gwangju, known as the “City of Hope and Light”, keeps alive the proud memory of its citizens, including numerous students, who stood up 35 years ago to defend democracy, offering the city a distinct legacy of culture and education. Gwangju is a city open to the world, a city looking to the future, and through its main theme, “The Impact of University Sport on the Global Community”, the Conference intends to be a milestone in that process. An imperative condition for our societies to meet the expectations of their future is to develop research and higher education projects that promote global consciousness and accountability among students, who will tomorrow be the decision makers. The traditional academic model, based on extreme specialization, focused on technology and economy, promoting unified “global cultural criteria” as universal values, with little reference to the rich cultural diversity of humanity, appears to be very simplistic, not to say obsolete, and involves the impoverishment of the human and the eco-environmental dimension. At a time when the world is desperately struggling to enhance creativity and put innovation at the forefront of its goals, we believe that the 2015 FISU Summer Universiade Conference might discuss an alternative academic project founded on trans-disciplinarity. To what extent and in what sense can we consider that the combination of sciences, sports, arts and culture within university programmes, conveying ethical values and integrating a multicultural and participatory approach, would promote and foster a spirit of curiosity, originality and transversality, and make students more active by arousing their curiosity? I wish you exciting, quality-driven exchanges of views, and I thank the organizing committee that has worked hard to give us the very best working conditions for the Conference.
