III. COUNTRY SITUATION

Over the last three years Honduras experienced an accelerated migration of hundreds of families, including minors to the United States. People fleeing their homes, searching for sanctuary across borders. For some people living in the communities that GENESIS works, in Honduras the right to life is challenged, trapped in a vicious state of violence and lack of opportunities, even when the homicide rate has been reduced. As a project working in the most dangerous areas we know that we can contribute to prevent irregular migration, but not only by providing safe spaces in the communities but also creating income generation opportunities, especially in the most at-risk population. We will continue working side by side with local leaders, the private sector and municipal governments to establish safe communities and create more job opportunities, so that people stay in their country. GENESIS is working in both ways, i) creating safe spaces in the most at-risk communities in the country and ii) working with the private sector to create more job opportunities even with returned migrants. Our efforts, however, are focused only on 66 communities in 7 municipalities and there is so much to do within the rest of the country.
