While it does not deny the importance of the various meanings and interpretations attached to tartan since the mid-eighteenth century, this article contends that more practical reasons for tartan’s popularity—primarily its functional and aesthetic qualities—merit greater attention. Along with evidence from contemporary newspapers and fashion manuals, this article focuses on evidence from the production and popular consumption of tartan at the turn of the nineteenth century, including its incorporation into fashionable dress and its use beyond the social elite. This article seeks to demonstrate the contemporary understanding of tartan as an attractive and useful commodity. Since the mid-eighteenth century tartan has been subjected to many varied and often confusing interpretations: it has been used as a symbol of loyalty and rebellion, as representing a fading Highland culture and heritage, as a visual reminder of the might of the British Empire, as a marker of social status, and even as a means of highlighting racial difference. -

The project focuses on the effects in Scotland of the development of the new media of film and wireless. It addresses question as to what changes, over the first decades of the twentieth century, these two revolutionary forms of public technology effect on the established entertainment system in Scotland and on the Scottish experience of culture. The study presents a broad view of the cultural scene in Scotland over the period: discusses contemporary politics; considers established and new theatrical activity; examines the development of a film culture; and investigates the expansion of broadcast wireless and its influence on indigenous theatre. -

Following the failed Jacobite Rebellion of 1745-46 many Highlanders fought for the British Army in the Seven Years War and American Revolutionary War. Although these soldiers were primarily motivated by economic considerations, their experiences were romanticized after Waterloo and helped to create a new, unified Scottish martial identity. This militaristic narrative, reinforced throughout the nineteenth century, explains why Scots fought and died in disproportionately large numbers during the First World War. THE ORIGINS OF THE “McCrackens” By Philip D. Smith, Jr. PhD, FSTS, GTS, FSA Scot “B’e a’Ghaidhlig an canan na h’Albanaich” – “Gaelic was the language of the Scottish people.” The McCrackens are originally Scottish and speakers of the Scottish Gaelic language, a cousin to Irish Gaelic. While today, Gaelic is only spoken by a few thousands, it was the language of most of the people of the north and west of Scotland until after 1900. The McCracken history comes from a long tradition passed from generation to generation by the “seannachies”, the oral historians, of the Gaelic speaking peoples. According to tradition, the family is named for Nachten, Lord of Moray, a district in the northeast of Scotland. Nachten supposedly lived in the 9th century. In the course of time a number of his descendants moved southwest across Scotland and settled in Argyll. The family multiplied and prospered. The Gaelic word for “son” is “mac” and that for “children” is “clann” The descendants of Nachten were called by their neighbors, the Campbells, MacDougalls, and others the “Children of the Son of Nachten”, in Gaelic “Cloinne MacNachtain”, “Clan MacNachtan”. Spelling was not regularized in either Scotland or America until well after 1800. Two spellings alternate for the guttural /k/-like sound common in many Gaelic words, -ch and –gh. /ch/ is the most common Scottish spelling but the sound may be spelled –gh. The Scottish word for “lake” is “loch” while in Northern England and Ireland the same word is spelled “lough”. “MacLachlan” and “Mac Loughlin” are the same name as are “Docherty” and “Dougherty”. -

A society wedding in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1910. By the end of the 17th century, white had become identified with maidenly innocence. But pink, blue, and yellow bridal dresses persisted until the late 19th century, when "white weddings1'-with bridesmaids, the best man, and composer Richard Wagner's "Bridal Chorusw-became an established tradition. Defining "tradition" is no easy matter. Sociologist Edward Shils called it "anything which is transmitted or handed down from the past to the present." In Chinese weddings as in the U.S. Ma- rine Corps, beliefs, images, social practices, and institutions may all partake of the traditional. Yet the symbols and rituals are less important than the human motives that guide their transmission down through the ages. Tradition may simply function as a means of promoting social stability and continuity. On the other hand, scholars note, it may be deliberately developed and culti- vated as a way of rewriting the past in order to justify the present. Here, in two case studies, Hugh Trevor-Roper and Terence Ran- ger suggest that what we now regard as "age-old" traditions may have their origins in inventive attempts to "establish or legiti- mize . status or relations of authority." by Hugh Trevor-Roper Today, whenever Scotsmen gather together to celebrate their national identity, they wear the kilt, woven in a tartan whose colors and pattern indicate their clan. This apparel, to which they ascribe great antiquity, is, in fact, of fairly recent ori- gin. Indeed, the whole concept of a distinct Highland culture and tradition is a retrospective invention. -

Despite centuries of practice in the art of empire creation and destruction, no power has been able to develop a structure durable enough to overcome all threats, both externally and internally. The British Empire is no exception. By the 18th century, England found itself with several nations opposing its expansion, the most notable among them Spain and France. Despite this enmity, England was determined to extend its reach, fixing its gaze on Scotland with the hopes of merging the two nations. This idea was not a new one. English Parliament tried multiple times throughout the 17th century to convince the Scottish government to consider uniting the two countries, effectively transforming them into a superpower to rival any other currently in existence. -
