While it does not deny the importance of the various meanings and interpretations attached to tartan since the mid-eighteenth century, this article contends that more practical reasons for tartan’s popularity—primarily its functional and aesthetic qualities—merit greater attention. Along with evidence from contemporary newspapers and fashion manuals, this article focuses on evidence from the production and popular consumption of tartan at the turn of the nineteenth century, including its incorporation into fashionable dress and its use beyond the social elite. This article seeks to demonstrate the contemporary understanding of tartan as an attractive and useful commodity. Since the mid-eighteenth century tartan has been subjected to many varied and often confusing interpretations: it has been used as a symbol of loyalty and rebellion, as representing a fading Highland culture and heritage, as a visual reminder of the might of the British Empire, as a marker of social status, and even as a means of highlighting racial difference. -

Specific Rules: Traditional Heavy Events at Amateur Highland Games
Suggested Update for Specific Rules Relating to Traditional Scottish Heavy Events at Amateur Highland Games The rules for the traditional Heavy Events at Amateur Highland Games have not been updated for many years. They are contained in Appendix H of the 2014 UKA rules for competition. scottishathletics propose that the following be adopted as guidelines to these rules and that an addendum be added to the forthcoming rule book to enable the various Amateur Highland Games to continue. Where rule numbers are included, they refer to those contained in the current 2016 UKA rules for competition. These guidelines should be read in conjunction with the current UKA rule book and will require to be updated when a new rule book is produced. Specific UKA domestic rules (2016 rule book) are highlighted in blue. Specific Rules Relating to Traditional Scottish Heavy Events at Amateur Highland Games Promoters of “Highland” Gatherings or Games may make it a condition of entry that competitors in the heavy events traditionally associated with such promotions must wear the kilt, but this condition must be clearly stated on the entry form and in the programme and competitors will not be allowed any option. Athletes must not wear track suit bottoms or similar covering when the kilt is being worn and the wearing of Highland hose should be encouraged. FIELD EVENTS Rule 180 GENERAL CONDITIONS – FIELD EVENTS (RULE 120 - 2014 UKA Rule Book) Practice Trials at the Competition Area (1) At the competition area and before the beginning of the event, each athlete may have practice trials. In the case of throwing events, the practice trials will be in draw order and always under the supervision of the Judges. -

OBJECTIVES By the end of this lesson the cadet shall have identified the elements of pitch. IMPORTANCE It is important for cadets to know the elements of pitch because it allows the cadets to read music which is the foundation to all practical music training activities. Teaching Point 1 Describe Staves Time: 5 min Method: Interactive Lecture STRUCTURE Staves are a set of parallel lines. Originally staves were many, many lines, and were reduced for ease of reading the music. THE SHEEPDOGS HAVE AT IT SYNOPSIS The Sheepdogs Have At It joins the Rolling Stone cover winners at the apex of their newfound fame and a crossroads in their careers. One might think that newfound fame would lead successful young rock stars to rest on their laurels, but nothing could be further from the truth. More than ever, with the whole world watching, the Sheepdogs need to get down to business. We join the band at their Saskatoon homecoming show in October 2011. They’ve returned for the first time since winning the Rolling Stone cover contest, this time as the opening act for Kings of Leon. We meet them and see them play for thousands of fans, their biggest audience yet. But the big task is still ahead. In January, The Sheepdogs go into a Nashville studio to record their new album, now backed by Atlantic records. Patrick Carney of The Black Keys is producing the record, and the guys have only 17 days to lay down the new tracks. This story follows the Sheepdogs into the studio as this task is carried to fruition, while alternating between the band’s current tour around the continent. There is a staggering amount of work to be done and the guys needs to keep on top of it. Occasionally, we take a big jump back in time to the early days of the band. There was a period, less than a year ago, when things weren’t going so well for the Sheepdogs. For seven years, the band had toiled in obscurity with almost no recognition. -

Covid-19 has been rough on all of us; it has been a horrible year plus. But the officers of the Society have been meeting on a regular basis trying hard to keep the Society going.
