What to see in Portland, OR - by Marco Behrmann 07/02/2004 1/3 WHAT TO SEE IN PORTLAND , OR _________________________________________ Listed below you will find a couple of sights and my personal favourites to do in Portland. Since Portland was my town of exchange I do not know as many things about the other cities like Eugene, Corvallis, Ashland or La Grande. However, it would be just great if somebody could add tips about their places similar to the ones here, too! Please feel free to forward them to me (marcobehrmann[at]web.de ). I do not want you to believe that just because I stayed in Portland, and have many tips here for Portland, that a year at one of the other Oregon cities is not the same exciting. The tips listed here, however, are interesting for all Baden-Wuerttemberg students in Oregon, because many things you can already see and experience during your orientation weeks. (BTW: This is almost everything I did (among other things, of course) within my 2 ½ weeks of re-visiting in June 2004; but it took me a year of living in the city in 2001/02 to figure out which were the hot tips ☺) Here are my personal Must-Sees Oregon History Center in SW Park blocks right south of PSU (This museum features very interesting and well researched exhibitions about the development of Portland as a city as well as about the whole Pacific Northwest as it was discovered from the sea and the Columbia River; good place to check out during your orientation weeks; you get a student reduction with ISIC or other student ID card) Council Crest Park (considered the highest spot in Portland; nice views to Mt Hood, Mt Adams, Mt St Helens and even Mt Rainier on some days as well as to Beaverton; take Bus 51 [Vista]; the Bus driver often feels himself as an informal Portland guide; tell him that you are visiting and he even might stop for you at nice viewpoints to take pictures. -

The Fields Neighborhood Park Community Questionnaire Results March-April 2007 A Community Questionnaire was included in the initial project newsletter, which was mailed to over 4,000 addresses in the vicinity of the park site (virtually the entire neighborhood) as well as other interested parties. The newsletter was made available for pick-up at Chapman School and Friendly House and made available electronically as well. A total of 148 questionnaires were submitted, either by mail or on the web, by the April 20 deadline. The following summarizes the results. 1. The original framework plan for the River District Parks suggested three common elements that would link the parks together. This park is envisioned as a “neighborhood park no answ er – over two square blocks providing more traditional spaces for neighborhood residents. Do you agree ? with this overall concept? no yes Comments Regarding Question #2 “Traditional Neighborhood Park” #1 - None (of the original “framework concepts” are important What to you mean by "traditional" As long as this park does not become filthy (ie. bad terrain, homeless) like the waterfront, I'm for it. Excellent idea. A traditional park will be a nice complement to the other two parks. I don't know if my selections were recorded above. A continuation of the boardwalk is essential to making the connection between and among the parks. The design of the buildings around the park has narrowed the feeling of openness so it is beginning to look like a private park for the residential buildings surrounding it. -

Johnson Sue Taylor Portland State University ©2011 ABSTRACT Founded in 1892, the Portland Art Association (PAA) served as Oregon’s and the Pacific Northwest’s leading visual arts institution for almost a century. While the Association formally dissolved in 1984, its legacy is felt strongly today in the work of its successor organizations, the Portland Art Museum and Pacific Northwest College of Art. Emerging during a period of considerable innovation in and fervent advocacy for the arts across America, the Association provided the organizational network and resources around which an energetic and diverse group of city leaders, civic reformers and philanthropists, as well as artists and art educators, coalesced. -
A Report on the 2003 Parks Levy Investment Objective 1: Restore
A Report on the 2003 Parks Levy Investment In November 2002, Portland voters approved a five-year Parks Levy to begin in July 2003. Levy dollars restored budget cuts made in FY 2002-03 as well as major services and improvements outlined in the Parks 2020 Vision plan adopted by City Council in July 2001. In order to fulfill our obligation to the voters, we identified four key objectives. This report highlights what we have accomplished to date. Objective 1: Restore $2.2 million in cuts made in 2002/03 budget The 2003 Parks Levy restored cuts that were made to balance the FY 2002-03 General Fund budget. These cuts included the closure of some recreational facilities, the discontinuation and reduction of some community partnerships that provide recreational opportunities for youth, and reductions in maintenance of parks and facilities. Below is a detailed list of services restored through levy dollars. A. Restore programming at six community schools. SUN Community Schools support healthy social and cross-cultural development of all participants, teach and model values of respect and inclusion of all people, and help reduce social disparities and inequities. The Board of County Commissioners is being asked to consider if Clackamas County is willing to be a recipient of state funding to repair the Willamette Falls Locks, and manage relevant repairs while a new owner is being established. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The Willamette Falls Locks State Commission (established by SB 256 in 2017) has advanced two legislative concepts for the 2019 State Legislative Session. HB 2304 authorizes issuance of lottery bonds to finance acquisition and restoration of Willamette Falls Locks. HB 2305 authorizes the Department of State Lands to perform work to acquire and restore operation of the Willamette Falls Locks. HB 2304 is a capital funding mechanism, while HB 2305 is a mechanism to determine non-federal ownership. As discussions have evolved at the legislative session, leaders in Salem have asked for more work to be done on HB 2305, related to the ownership questions. This works is being done by the Willamette Falls Locks State Commission members and staff. Meanwhile, the funding bill continues with good support at the state level. This separation of bills has left the question, if the funding bill were to pass and not the ownership bill, where will the money live should it be provided by the Legislature. -
