Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018 Conforming to General Convention 2018 1 Preface Christians have since ancient times honored men and women whose lives represent heroic commitment to Christ and who have borne witness to their faith even at the cost of their lives. Such witnesses, by the grace of God, live in every age. The criteria used in the selection of those to be commemorated in the Episcopal Church are set out below and represent a growing consensus among provinces of the Anglican Communion also engaged in enriching their calendars. What we celebrate in the lives of the saints is the presence of Christ expressing itself in and through particular lives lived in the midst of specific historical circumstances. In the saints we are not dealing primarily with absolutes of perfection but human lives, in all their diversity, open to the motions of the Holy Spirit. Many a holy life, when carefully examined, will reveal flaws or the bias of a particular moment in history or ecclesial perspective. It should encourage us to realize that the saints, like us, are first and foremost redeemed sinners in whom the risen Christ’s words to St. Paul come to fulfillment, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The “lesser feasts” provide opportunities for optional observance. They are not intended to replace the fundamental celebration of Sunday and major Holy Days. As the Standing Liturgical Commission and the General Convention add or delete names from the calendar, successive editions of this volume will be published, each edition bearing in the title the date of the General Convention to which it is a response. -

MEINARDU S Athens, Greece Some months ago, I revisited the island of Patmos and the sites of the seven churches to which letters are addressed in the second and third chap- ters of the book of Revelation. What follows is a report on such Christian remains as have survived and an indication of the various traditions which have grown up at the eight locations, where, as at so many other places in the Orthodox and Latin world, piety has sought tangible localization. I set out from Piraeus and sailed to the island of Patmos, off the Turkish coast, which had gained its significance because of the enforced exile of God's servant John (Rev. 1:1, 9) and from the acceptance of the Revelation in the NT canon. From the tiny port of Skala, financial and tourist center of Patmos, the road ascends to the 11th century Greek Orthodox monastery of St. John the Theologian. Half way to this mighty fortress monastery, I stopped at the Monastery of the Apocalypse, which enshrines the "Grotto of the Revelation." Throughout the centuries pilgrims have come to this site to receive blessings. When Pitton de Tournefort visited Patmos in 1702, the grotto was a poor hermitage administered by the bishop of Samos. The abbot presented de Tournefort with pieces of rock from the grotto, assuring him that they could expel evil spirits and cure diseases. Nowadays, hundreds of western tourists visit the grotto daily, especially during the summer, and are shown those traditional features which are related in one way or another with the vision of John. -

They turned in suspected Christians to the Roman authorities in a practice known as Penna. • To be a Christian in Smyrna & the Empire meant poverty, & persecution and even death in public on display by the most vile and shameful ways imaginable. ➢ 2:12-17 Pergamum • Lesson for us: Do not compromise GOD’S Word. • Pergamum was the Roman capitol of Asia. As such many of the Roman elite actually resided there when not in Rome itself. • Pergamum was full of every vice and sin Rome had to offer. ➢ 2: 18-28 Thyatira • Lesson for us: To reject false teachings & pagan practices. -

Radet [En Phrygie, p. 111] and I have independently and about the same time reached approximately the same conclusion as to the district in which Pepouza lay. » (RAMSAY, Cities and Bishoprics of Phrygia, p. 573). It is a pleasure to be able to report in the present issue of Byzantion that the Expedition sent to Phrygia in 1930 by the American Society for Archaeological Research in Asia Minor found epigraphical evidence which confirms the accuracy of this location. The actual site of Pepouza still remains uncertain, but the uncertainty has been confined within narrow limits. The references in literature to Pepouza, the chief centre and « New Jerusalem » of the Phrygian Montanists, were collected by Ramsay loc. cit. To enable the reader to appreciate the bearing of the new evidence, it is necessary to supplement Ramsay’s account with a summary of subsequent investigation into the local history and the epigraphy of Phrygian Montanism. In Bulletin of the John Rylands Library, VII, 1923, p. 309 ff., the germ of the Montanist movement in Phrygia was traced to the Church in Philadelphia, as described in the Letter to that Church in the Apocalypse. The earliest direct reference to Montanism ― or rather proto- Montanism ― occurs in the Martyrdom of Polycarp, where the epithet « Phrygian » applied to the would-be martyr Quintus shows that there were « Montanists » before Montanus. -

Introduction to the Seven Churches of Revelation My interest in the Seven Churches of Revelation was stimulated by two visits I made to the seven sites a few years ago. I realised that I was visiting a country where the Early Church first grew in importance until it spread throughout the world. The names of some of these churches and others around them appear frequently in the Scriptures. In the New Testament the seven Churches in Revelation are shown on the map below as a loop of cities in the Western part of Turkey (known in the Bible as Asia Minor). Patmos where the Apostle John was banished to is seen below the island of Samos. On the mainland Ephesus is seen above Miletus on the coast and travelling Northwards is Smyrna (now Izmir) then up to Pergamum then down to Thyatira and Sardis then across to Philadelphia then down through Hierapolis to Laodicea. Each of the seven churches are marked with a + sign. - Of the seven Chruches of Revelation Ephesus is mentioned seventeen times in the New Testament including an Epistle written to those living in the area. and is overwhelmingly the most quoted city in Asia. Paul visited there on both his second and third missionary journeys. The other Churches are mentioned briefly and mainly in the Book of Acts and Revelation. Smyrna is mentioned twice, Pergamum (Pergamos) twice, Thyatira four times, Sardis three times, Philadelphia twice, Laodicea five times. Hierapolis once, Miletus three times, Acts Local tradition emanating from the Greek Orthodox Church states that the Apostle John went to Ephesus together with the Virgin Mary to oversee the seven Churches in the Western part of Turkey. -

The Apostolic Fathers with Justin Martyr and Irenaeus Philip Schaff Polycarp 31 Introductory Note to the Epistle of Polycarp to the Philippians [a.d. 65–100–155.] The Epistle of Polycarp is usually made a sort of preface to those of Ignatius, for reasons which will be obvious to the reader. Yet he was born later, and lived to a much later period. They seem to have been friends from the days of their common pupilage under St. John; and there is nothing improbable in the conjecture of Usher, that he was the “angel of the church in Smyrna,” to whom the Master says, “Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.” His pupil Irenæus gives us one of the very few portraits of an apostolic man which are to be found in antiquity, in a few sentences which are a picture: “I could describe the very place in which the blessed Polycarp sat and taught; his going out and coming in; the whole tenor of his life; his personal appearance; how he would speak of the conversations he had held with John and with others who had seen the Lord. How did he make mention of their words and of whatever he had heard from them respecting the Lord.” Thus he unconsciously tantalizes our reverent curiosity. Alas! that such conversations were not written for our learning. -

[3] The Paul wanted to have this one go out with him. And taking, he circumcised him, because of the Jews who were in that place. For they all knew his father that he was a Greek. [4] And as they were going through the cities, they were delivering over to them the decrees2 to keep that had been judged3 by the apostles and the elders who were in Jerusalem. [5] So then, the assemblies were strengthened in the faith and increased in number daily. [6] And passing through the Phrygia and the Galatia4 country, being forbidden by the holy spirit to speak the word in the Asia, [7] coming to the Mysia,5 they tried to go to the Bithynia,6 and the spirit did not permit them. [8] And passing by the Mysia, they went down unto Troas.7 [9] And a vision through the night appeared to the Paul. A certain Macedonian8 man was standing urging him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia. Help us.” [10] And when he saw the vision, immediately we sought to go out unto the Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach them good news. [11] Therefore, sailing from Troas, we ran a straight course unto Samothrace,9 and after that unto Neapolis,10 [12] and from there unto Philippi,11 which is a prominent city of that part of Macedonia, a colony.12 And we were continuing in that city some days. -

e-Perimetron, Vol. 15, No. 1, 2020 [26-43] www.e-perimetron.org | ISSN 1790-3769 Evangelos Voulgarakis, Angeliki Tsorlini, Chrysoula Boutoura Depicting the Greek communities in “Smyrna Zone”, Asia Minor at the beginning of 20th century (1919 – 1922), combining historical maps with textual data Keywords: G.I.S, historical maps, textual data, homogenization of cartographic data, thematic cartography Summary: Rare historical maps and textual data from different sources, combined together in a proper way, can provide a picture of the past in a region with special interest. The aim of this project is the study and the promotion of the Greek communities on the west coast of Asia Mi- nor at the beginning of 20th century (1919-1922), when the Greek presence in the area was ended due to the Treaty of Lausanne (1923). The study is based on historical maps depicting the area at that time and on textual data and descriptions which provide information about the histo- ry of these communities, their population, their educational system and the organization of the Metropolises1 in that zone. All this information is combined to each other, in order to create a map depicting the Greek communities in the “Smyrna Zone” and their development at the time from the Occupation of Smyrna by Greek forces in 1919, until the Great Fire and Smyrna’s ca- tastrophe in 1922. The final product is the Map of Hellenism in “Smyrna Zone” at the begin- ning of the 20th century (1919 - 1922) in scale 1:250.000. Introduction Historical maps are an important part of our cultural heritage and a valuable source of historical data associated with specific periods in the past.
