Besides this, it is a critical and analytical study of the changes in three literary fairy tales when translated to Walt Disney's films. The analysis corpus, therefore, consists of the recorded texts of Perrault, Grimm and Andersen in their bibliographies and animated films "Cinderella" (1950), "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (1937) and "The little Mermaid "(1989) that they were respectively inspired. The purpose of this analysis is to identify what changes happened in these adapted stories from literature to film and discuss about them. Resumo Este trabalho trata-se, fundamentalmente, de uma comparação entre obras da Literatura com suas respectivas adaptações para o Cinema. Para além disto, é um estudo crítico e analítico das transformações em três contos de fadas literários quando transpostos para narrativas fílmicas de Walt Disney. O corpus de análise, para tanto, é composto pelos textos registrados de Perrault, Grimm e Andersen em suas respectivas bibliografias e os filmes de animação “Cinderella” (1950), “Branca de Neve e os Sete Anões” (1937) e “A Pequena Sereia” (1989) que eles respectivamente inspiraram. -

Culture | Volume 1 Issue 1 | May 2017 13 Gina Jibran Once upon a time becoming a princess occurred only when marrying a prince. Nowadays, the yearning to become a princess satisfies more than obtaining the status. Pretending to be a princess is seen to be just as fulfilling. What is it about being a princess that brings contentment? Specifically, what is it about wearing an oversized dress and a tiara that makes life more fascinating for young girls? Disney fairytales such as Snow White and Cinderella have helped popularize the motif of princesses. Girls can buy Cinderella costumes or visit their favourite princess at Disneyland. This helps create the notion that becoming a princess is something to be desired. It is important to note, that life as a princess is hardly ever visited in stories such as Grimm’s Little Snow‐White, or even Disney’s Cinderella. In fact, these tales end right after a girl marries prince charming and obtains the princess status. The sole insight readers gain about life as a princess is that, ‘they lived happily ever after’—a sentence stated at the end of many Disney fairytales. The company Fairytale Land, demonstrates how contemporary society recreates the princess motif. The ability to facilitate the transformation of a young girl to become a princess is promoted at Fairytale Land. Fairytale Land, however, distorts Disney’s focus on becoming a princess into a process whereby young girls are allowed to live that life of luxury. In the focus on being a princess, one then fixates on contemporary female ideals of beauty. -

In this thesis, I explain the theory in detail, apply it to the text, and discuss what can be gained by applying such a theory to young adult literature. Young adult literature (YAL) works with the concept of identity, and applying a Social Psychological theory of identity to YAL can provide a new vantage point from which to examine the concept of identity as portrayed in YAL. Through my application of Identity Theory to the texts, I demonstrate how we can apply this theory to young adult novels, focusing on three specific identities of the main character, Cinder. Following this analysis, I discuss potential pedagogical implications of this type of textual analysis in addition to implications for the field of YAL itself. -
