    Citizenship, Authorship, and Disability in Cervantes and Scarron by Adleen Carlisle Crapo A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Comparative Literature University of Toronto © Copyright by Adleen Carlisle Crapo, 2020 Citizenship, Authorship, and Disability in Cervantes and Scarron Adleen Crapo Doctor of Philosophy Comparative Literature University of Toronto 2020 Abstract Noting the all-too-recent interest of disability scholars in early modern literature, this dissertation seeks to establish a way forward for the study of disability in a period-appropriate way. Through its juxtaposition of disabled authors’ Paul Scarron and Miguel de Cervantes’ paratexts and their treatment of disability in literary texts, it seeks to elucidate a possible relationship between disability and representation. It uses popular lexicographies to trace the diverse and changing vocabulary the two authors employed for different impairments. At the same time, it considers different genres, such as epic and drama, and modes like the burlesque, which were particularly accessible to disabled men of the period. This dissertation provides an account of the differing disabilities of both authors, and how their respective disabilities called into question their national identities. The stakes were high for both. Cervantes had to demonstrate that though the hand was a symbol of Hispanitas, or Spanishness, in losing his he had only become more Spanish. For Scarron, his inflammatory disease, which had left him with a dramatic spinal curvature, meant that he needed to employ the burlesque to demonstrate both his wit (a courtly and French quality) and his natural humour. The authors' disabilities are considered in relation to the organ or functioning which was impacted, as well as its associated symbolism and history.

FROM 1903 TO ABOUT 1933 The following list of the first sail yachts in the Club cannot be said to be complete, nevertheless it provides a record of the better known vessels and was compiled from newspaper files of The Province, News-Advertiser, The World and The Sun during the first three decades of the Club activities. Vancouver newspapers gave very complete coverage of sailing events in that period when yacht racing commanded wide public interest. ABEGWEIT—32 ft. aux. Columbia River centerboard cruising sloop built at Steveston in 1912 for H. C. Shaw, who joined the Club in 1911. ADANAC-18 ft. sloop designed and built by Horace Stone in 1910. ADDIE—27 ft. open catboat sloop built in 1902 for Bert Austin at Vancouver Shipyard by William Watt, the first yacht constructed at the yard. Addie was in the original R.V.Y.C. fleet. ADELPIII—44 ft. schooner designed by E. B. Schock for Thicke brothers. Built 1912, sailed by the Thicke brothers till 1919 when sold to Bert Austin, who sold it in 1922 to Seattle. AILSA 1-28.5 ft. Gies Gustavo Pellón Herbert Braun ii © Copyright by Alison Heather Atkins All Rights Reserved August 2013 iii Abstract This dissertation analyzes the representation of food in Spanish novels and cookbooks from the 1980s and 90s, a period in which Spanish cuisine gained an unprecedented level of international visibility and prominence. Using both cookbooks and novels published during the period, my project examines the tension between everyday and stylized food practices in order to explore how each text engages with questions of authorship and artistic creation. The first two chapters focus on cookbooks authored by alta cocina chefs as well as by gastronomic critics who have compiled signature recipes by the chefs. I consider how these texts engage with contemporary theories of authorship and creativity, establishing a complex relationship with the modern notion of author as individual, autonomous, and unique, a kind of genius figure. In Chapter 1, I analyze the ways in which the prologue writers and compilers of two cookbooks of the early 1980s, Carlos Delgado’s Cien recetas magistrales (1981) and the 1982 Grandes maestros de la nueva cocina vasca present the featured chefs as unique and autonomous creators as part of a process of establishing culinary art as a legitimate art form.

    ANNEX 1 QUESTIONNAIRE about the socio-economic implications of the placing on the market of GMOs for cultivation 16 July 2009 A – Introduction note Article 31.7 (d) of Directive 2001/18/EC1 provides that the Commission should send to the European Parliament and the Council a specific report on the operation of the Directive including inter alia an assessment of the socio-economic implications of deliberate releases and placing on the market of GMOs. These implications are defined in Recital (62) of the Directive as the socio-economic advantages and disadvantages of each category of GMOs authorised for placing on the market, which take due account of the interest of farmers and consumers. In its 2004 report, the Commission noted that there was no sufficient experience to make such an assessment (the Directive became fully applicable as of 17 October 2002 and several Member States had not transposed yet so only little experience of its implementation was available). Moreover Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003, its articles 7 and 19, asks the Commission to submit a draft of the authorisation decision taking into account, together with the opinion of the Authority in charge of the scientific assessment, "other legitimate factors relevant to the matter under consideration". At its meeting on 4 December 2008, the Environment Council adopted conclusions on GMOs mentioning among other things the appraisal of socio-economic benefits and risks of placing GMOs on the European market for cultivation. In particular the Council conclusions indicated the following: "The Council: 7. Points out that under Regulation 1829/2003 it is possible, under certain conditions and as part of a case by case examination, for legitimate factors specific to the GMO assessed to be taken into account in the risk management process which follows the risk assessment.
