JAVIER RUI-WAMBA MARTIJA Ingeniero de Caminos, Canales y Puertos Presidente de la Fundación Esteyco Fundación Esteyco was founded in May 1991 to contribute to engineering and architectural progress in Spain. The precarious and uncertain situation in which independent engineering has been practised in the country to date has required professionals to adopt essentially survival tactics. The efforts of a growing number of those professionals, with the support of governmental bodies, has nonetheless consolidated an activity whose services are imperative to a modern and efficient society. The time has come to think about the future, trusting that it will soon be upon us. Let us foster an atmosphere where creativity can thrive, where good work is both expected and appreciated. Let us contribute to sound training in engineering, in the awareness that the value of an organisation lies in the value of its members and that in engineering, individual merit is measured in terms of expertise. Let us encourage better and more frequent inter-professional partnering, eliminating unnecessary boundaries. Let us claim a place of distinction for engineering in society, re-steering the prevalent get-the-job-done culture to a get-the-job-done right culture. Let us regard engineering as an extension of the university, where young graduates consolidate their training in years that will be decisive for their future. Let us become involved in the university and research institutes. Let us ensure the stability and survival of our organisations, and provide the means to maintain their vitality, our guarantee for the future. Let us value our independence, not as a weapon to be wielded against anyone, but essentially as an intellectual trait in people whose job is to think, inform and decide freely. CHAPTER NINE IlAPA (BI)0UNOI~ I The story of Phineus is incorporated into a larger Argonautic whole not only by Apollonius (II 178-530), but by Valerius Flaccus (IV 423-636) as well.1 Both poets, moreover, treat the old man sympathetically, picturing him as an unfortunate victim of ex cessive divine vengeance. His revelations of divine plans out of con cern for mankind's welfare hardly merited irrevocable blinding2 or even the temporary nuisance of visitations from the rapacious Harpies every time that he tried to consume a meal (so Apollonius II 183ff.; Valerius IV 427ff.).3 Apollonius adds some pathetic touches already essayed in another connection elsewhere in his poem. When he allows the blind seer to call himself 8umxµµopoc:; (II 218), he surely calls to mind the use of the same term with reference to Jason's parents (I 253; 286) or, again, Polyxo's complaint that the women of Lemnos, herself in cluded, are to be regarded as such (I 685).4 And just as Polyxo is 1 Valerius offers nothing comparable either to Apollonius' digressive Aristaeus-narrative (II 500-527: cf. above, p. 5, n. 1; lines 498f. and 528-530 (concerning which cf. above, p. 59, n. 2; p. 90, n. 3) are transitional to the next episode, the passage of the Symplegades (discussed in Ch. X below)) or to his more integral story of Paraebius (II 449ff.: cf. below, p. 166 and n. 6). 2 Cf. below, p. 155 and n. 2. 3 Note the Promethean tone of the Valerian Phineus' utterance: fata loquax mentemque Iouis quaeque abdita solus consilia et terris subito uentura parabat, prodideram miserans hominum genus ..

Shipmates by Rick Jackson. Robbers? he wondered. Bandits? Pirates? Polyphemus ran to get Hercules. Together they searched the area. Hercules was so distraught about his missing sidekick that he forgot all about his mission, the Argo and his crewmates, who were waiting. Back at the beach, Jason started to get worried. The sun was going down and the landing team still wasn’t back. He sent out a search party, but all they found were pottery shards by a stream. There were no signs of Hercules, Polyphemus or Hylas. The next day, the Argonauts searched again for their comrades. They had no luck. The ship’s prow had no advice to offer. Finally, as the sun was setting, Jason announced that the Argo would have to leave in the morning. ‘We have to assume that Hercules and the others are lost. We must keep sailing.’ The crew didn’t like that. You don’t just sail away from Hercules.

  • A Stranger in a Strange Land: Medea in Roman Republican Tragedy1 Robert Cowan
CHAPTER 3 A Stranger in a Strange Land: Medea in Roman Republican Tragedy1 Robert Cowan The first performance of a Roman version of a Greek tragedy in 240 BC was a momentous event. It was not the beginning of Roman appropriation of Greek culture- Rome had had contact and complex interaction with Greek communities in Magna Graecia and elsewhere from earliest times - but it was an important landmark in the relationship between Greece and Rome. 2 When a tragedy by Livius Andronicus was performed to celebrate victory over Carthage in the First Punic War, a central cultural practice of an alien culture was adopted, adapted, appropriated and transformed to serve as a central cultural practice of Rome. It is significant that the first tragedy celebrated a victory (albeit over Carthage), since the appropriation of Greek tragedy was an act of cultural conquest, as Roman actors marched into and occupied the stage of Attic drama. Yet the event was more complex than that description suggests. In Horace's phrase, captured Greece captured its savage master.3 The writing ofRoman tragedy in the Greek style was simultaneously an act of self-confident literary invasion and of cultural submission to the thrall of a more established theatrical tradition. In terms of literary history, this complex interrelationship marks the beginning of Latin literature, in conjunction with Livius's Latin, Saturnian version of the Odyssey. In terms of culture, the flourishing of Roman drama coincided with the massive expansion of Roman territory and the accompanying challenge to its sense of identity. Dramas were performed at public festivals, /rrdi scaenici, organized by state officials, the aediles, and sponsored by influential elites.

  • Introduction: Medea in Greece and Rome
INTRODUCTION: MEDEA IN GREECE AND ROME A J. Boyle maiusque mari Medea malum. Seneca Medea 362 And Medea, evil greater than the sea. Few mythic narratives of the ancient world are more famous than the story of the Colchian princess/sorceress who betrayed her father and family for love of a foreign adventurer and who, when abandoned for another woman, killed in revenge both her rival and her children. Many critics have observed the com plexities and contradictions of the Medea figure—naive princess, knowing witch, faithless and devoted daughter, frightened exile, marginalised alien, dis placed traitor to family and state, helper-màiden, abandoned wife, vengeful lover, caring and filicidal mother, loving and fratricidal sister, oriental 'other', barbarian saviour of Greece, rejuvenator of the bodies of animals and men, killer of kings and princesses, destroyer and restorer of kingdoms, poisonous stepmother, paradigm of beauty and horror, demi-goddess, subhuman monster, priestess of Hecate and granddaughter of the sun, bride of dead Achilles and ancestor of the Medes, rider of a serpent-drawn chariot in the sky—complex ities reflected in her story's fragmented and fragmenting history. That history has been much examined, but, though there are distinguished recent exceptions, comparatively little attention has been devoted to the specifically 'Roman' Medea—the Medea of the Republican tragedians, of Cicero, Varro Atacinus, Ovid, the younger Seneca, Valerius Flaccus, Hosidius Geta and Dracontius, and, beyond the literary field, the Medea of Roman painting and Roman sculp ture. Hence the present volume of Ramus, which aims to draw attention to the complex and fascinating use and abuse of this transcultural heroine in the Ro man intellectual and visual world.

  • The Voyage of the Argo and Other Modes of Travel in Apollonius’ Argonautica
THE VOYAGE OF THE ARGO AND OTHER MODES OF TRAVEL IN APOLLONIUS’ ARGONAUTICA Brian D. McPhee A thesis submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Classics. Chapel Hill 2016 Approved by: William H. Race James J. O’Hara Emily Baragwanath © 2016 Brian D. McPhee ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Brian D. McPhee: The Voyage of the Argo and Other Modes of Travel in Apollonius’ Argonautica (Under the direction of William H. Race) This thesis analyzes the Argo as a vehicle for travel in Apollonius’ Argonautica: its relative strengths and weaknesses and ultimately its function as the poem’s central mythic paradigm. To establish the context for this assessment, the first section surveys other forms of travel in the poem, arranged in a hierarchy of travel proficiency ranging from divine to heroic to ordinary human mobility. The second section then examines the capabilities of the Argo and its crew in depth, concluding that the ship is situated on the edge between heroic and human travel. The third section confirms this finding by considering passages that implicitly compare the Argo with other modes of travel through juxtaposition. The conclusion follows cues from the narrator in proposing to read the Argo as a mythic paradigm for specifically human travel that functions as a metaphor for a universal and timeless human condition. iii parentibus meis “Finis origine pendet.” iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First and foremost, I owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to my director and mentor, William Race.

  • Oracular Prophecy and Psychology in Ancient Greek Warfare
ORACULAR PROPHECY AND PSYCHOLOGY IN ANCIENT GREEK WARFARE Peter McCallum BA (Hons) MA A thesis submitted to the University of Wales Trinity Saint David in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Classics University of Wales Trinity Saint David June 2017 Director of Studies: Dr Errietta Bissa Second Supervisor: Dr Kyle Erickson Abstract This thesis examines the role of oracular divination in warfare in Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic Greece, and assesses the extent to which it affected the psychology and military decision-making of ancient Greek poleis. By using a wide range of ancient literary, epigraphical, archaeological, and iconographical evidence and relevant modern scholarship, this thesis will fully explore the role of the Oracle in warfare, especially the influence of the major Oracles at Delphi, Dodona, Olympia, Didyma, and Ammon on the foreign policies and military strategies of poleis and their psychological preparation for war; as well as the effect of oracular prophecies on a commander’s decision- making and tactics on the battlefield, and on the psychology and reactions of soldiers before and during battle. This thesis contends that oracular prophecy played a fundamental and integral part in ancient Greek warfare, and that the act of consulting the Oracles, and the subsequent prognostications issued by the Oracles, had powerful psychological effects on both the polis citizenry and soldiery, which in turn had a major influence and impact upon military strategy and tactics, and ultimately on the outcome of conflicts in the ancient Greek world. Declarations/Statements DECLARATION This work has not previously been accepted in substance for any degree and is not being concurrently submitted in candidature for any degree.

Citizenship, Authorship, and Disability in Cervantes and Scarron by Adleen Carlisle Crapo A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Comparative Literature University of Toronto © Copyright by Adleen Carlisle Crapo, 2020 Citizenship, Authorship, and Disability in Cervantes and Scarron Adleen Crapo Doctor of Philosophy Comparative Literature University of Toronto 2020 Abstract Noting the all-too-recent interest of disability scholars in early modern literature, this dissertation seeks to establish a way forward for the study of disability in a period-appropriate way. Through its juxtaposition of disabled authors’ Paul Scarron and Miguel de Cervantes’ paratexts and their treatment of disability in literary texts, it seeks to elucidate a possible relationship between disability and representation. It uses popular lexicographies to trace the diverse and changing vocabulary the two authors employed for different impairments. At the same time, it considers different genres, such as epic and drama, and modes like the burlesque, which were particularly accessible to disabled men of the period. This dissertation provides an account of the differing disabilities of both authors, and how their respective disabilities called into question their national identities. The stakes were high for both. Cervantes had to demonstrate that though the hand was a symbol of Hispanitas, or Spanishness, in losing his he had only become more Spanish. For Scarron, his inflammatory disease, which had left him with a dramatic spinal curvature, meant that he needed to employ the burlesque to demonstrate both his wit (a courtly and French quality) and his natural humour. The authors' disabilities are considered in relation to the organ or functioning which was impacted, as well as its associated symbolism and history.
