The No. 12 University of Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team outlasted the Fresno State Bulldogs 30-17, 30-22, 13-30, 30-22 on Sunday at the Stan Sheriff Center. With the win, the Rainbow Wahine improved to 7-0 in the Western Athletic Conference and 13-3 on the season. Fresno State dropped to 2-6 in the WAC and 4-14 overall. Recording double-doubles and leading the way for the Rainbow Wahine were sophomore Aneli Cubi-Otineru and junior Tara Hittle. Cubi-Otineru posted 16 kills and 12 digs, while Hittle had 11 kills and 18 digs. Hawai‘i came out strong early in Game 1, taking a 6-1 advantage, but the Bulldogs responded, cutting the deficit to 14-13. Thereafter, freshman Elizabeth Ka‘aihue served up nine straight points to give UH the go-ahead victory. Ka‘aihue added 26 digs to the team’s performance on Sunday. The Bulldogs used a 5-1 run to go up 8-6 in Game 2 and then furthered the lead to 14-9, but UH sophomore Jayme Lee came up big, serving six straight points to give the ’Bows the lead for the rest of the game. The Rainbow Wahine scored 11 of the final 16 points. Seven UH hitting errors gave the Bulldogs a 14-3 lead in Game 3, and the Rainbow Wahine couldn’t find their footing, falling 30-13. Eager to put Fresno State away, UH used a 10-2 run in the Game 4 to bounce back and capture the match. The Rainbow Wahine head on the road for another three-game trip against WAC foes; they will face Boise State (Oct. 11), Idaho (Oct. 13) and Utah State (Oct. 15).

The University of Hawai‘i is playing host to two exhibition games between the NBA’s Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers this week at the Stan Sheriff Center. The games will mark the conclusion of their training sessions in Hawai‘i; the Lakers have been practicing on the UH campus, and the Warriors were training on the BYU Hawai‘i campus. In addition to the training sessions, the Lakers have been participating in service projects in and around Honolulu as a part of the organization’s Read to Achieve program. While every team in the NBA conducts training camp differ- ently, the Lakers and Warriors make their way to Hawai‘i every other year, where they mark the beginning of the NBA season with training sessions and exhibition games. The Warriors are coming off a 42-40 season, culminating in a conference semifinals appear- ance, while the Lakers and head coach Phil Jackson are trying to recover from their 42-40 record last year, exiting the playoffs in the first round with a 4-1 series loss to the Phoenix Suns. Ka Leo will give you the first look at the Warriors and Lakers with coverage of Tuesday’s game appearing in Thursday’s paper and Thursday’s game in Monday’s issue. Otherwise, tickets are available at the Stan Sheriff Center, with prices ranging from $10 COURTESY PHOTO to $80. Tipoff for both games is scheduled for 7 p.m. NBA OFFICIAL WEB SITE
