Volume Number 108 The Battle of the Java Sea Lead: Melancholy gripped the Allies in December, 1941. Japanese forces were everywhere victorious in Southeast Asia. It was time to take a stand. Intro.: A Moment in Time with Dan Roberts. Content: Thailand, Malaya, Wake Island, Hong Kong, Manila, each were attacked by the Japanese and each fell just as quickly. On the 3rd of January, Churchill and Roosevelt formed a joint command with the Dutch and Australians, the purpose of which was to slow down the Japanese assault. The aim was to stop the enemy at the so- called Malay Barrier, an imaginary line stretching from Singapore at the base of the Malayan Peninsula down along the archipelago that is today known as Indonesia to the west coast of New Guinea. If the Japanese were going to be stopped, the Allies would have to hold the island of Java and therefore, it was in the Java Sea that they drew the proverbial line in the sand. All during February, the two navies danced around each other but avoided a pitched battle. The Japanese had virtual command of the skies, seasoned naval crews with experience working together, and use of the Long Lance torpedo, the best in the world at the time. The Allies had thrown together a rag-tag collection of cruisers and destroyers from all four navies, their ships were manned by crews who had worked together only for a short time, and they were forced on occasion to leave their spotter aircraft behind. As can be expected, on the night of February 25, 1942, the decisive encounter left the Allied ships at a great disadvantage. A running battle ensued and despite great heroism, only the US destroyers survived. Singapore had fallen on February 15th and with no naval protection, Java's poorly armed defenses were overwhelmed. The Malay barrier had failed and it would be three months before the Japanese received their first major set- back at the Battle of Coral Sea. At the University of Richmond, this is Dan Roberts. Scientia Militaria, South African Journal of Military Studies, Vol 46, Nr 2, 2018. doi: 10.5787/46-2-1237 THE DUTCH STRATEGIC AND OPERATIONAL APPROACH IN THE INDONESIAN WAR OF INDEPENDENCE, 1945– 1949 Leopold Scholtz1 North-West University Abstract The Indonesian War of Independence (1945–1949) and the Dutch attempt to combat the insurgency campaign by the Indonesian nationalists provides an excellent case study of how not to conduct a counter-insurgency war. In this article, it is reasoned that the Dutch security strategic objective – a smokescreen of autonomy while keeping hold of political power – was unrealistic. Their military strategic approach was very deficient. They approached the war with a conventional war mind- set, thinking that if they could merely reoccupy the whole archipelago and take the nationalist leaders prisoner, that it would guarantee victory. They also mistreated the indigenous population badly, including several mass murders and other war crimes, and ensured that the population turned against them. There was little coordination between the civilian and military authorities. Two conventional mobile operations, while conducted professionally, actually enlarged the territory to be pacified and weakened the Dutch hold on the country. By early 1949, it was clear that the Dutch had lost the war, mainly because the Dutch made a series of crucial mistakes, such as not attempting to win the hearts and minds of the local population. In addition, the implacable opposition by the United States made their war effort futile. Za druhé světové války sloužil před tím, než padl do japonského zajetí, jako stíhací pilot Hurricanu ve Velké Británii, Evropě a na Dálném východě. V prvé polovině šedesátých letech se začal věnovat psaní a divadlu. Je úspěšným autorem divadelních, rozhlasových a televizních her. Vedle Hurricane na Sumatře mu vyšly další dvě knihy faktu, Hurricane nad džunglí (Hurricane over the Jungle) popisující letecké boje v Singapuru a Holandské východní Indii a Piloti Hurricanů a Spitfirů ve válce (Hurricane and Spitfire Pilots at War), která se zabývá jeho vlastními zkušenostmi z pohledu vojenského letce. Napsal rovněž několik novel, z nichž ta poslední, Fepow, byla navržena na Bookerovu cenu. V současnosti žije se svou ženou blízko Henley-on-Thames. This fundamental shift in American naval policy occurred between 1945 and 1953. Drawing upon their close connections with the U.S. Navy during the war, the British and Canadians in particular built a web of connections within the U.S. consisting of naval representatives in Washington as well as liaison and exchange officers. Beginning in late 1946 the British, Canadian, and American militaries agreed to standardize their procedures, doctrine, and equipment. However, the failed efforts to create a common sonobuoy showed that standardization of concepts would occur before standardization of weapon calibers. To that end the three navies wrote common communications and tactical publications that by 1952 allowed their ships to operate together on short notice. These publications were written by the Canada-United Kingdom-United States (CANUKUS) Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Working Group, a hitherto little known organization that worked to standardize ASW doctrine and equipment between the three fleets. In addition, the British and American anti-submarine training schools, in Ireland and Key West respectively, began hosting visits by ASW ships and aircrafts from each other’s fleet beginning in 1947.
