  • Status of Fish Species Diversity in Ghaghat River in Northern Bangladesh M
Ann.M. R. Bangladesh Islam, M. Das, Agric. M. (2018) N. Mondal 22 (1) and : 95-105 G. M. Mostakim ISSN 1025-482X (Print)95 2521-5477 (Online) STATUS OF FISH SPECIES DIVERSITY IN GHAGHAT RIVER IN NORTHERN BANGLADESH M. R. Islam1*, M. Das1, M. N. Mondal2 and G. M. Mostakim3 Abstract Fish species diversity and it’s conservation status of Ghaghat river in northern region of Bangladesh was investigated by field sampling using a taxonomic guide, FishBase data and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) conservation index. The study revealed that a total of 55 species of fishes belonging to 45 genera, 22 families and 9 orders were found in the river. Among the identified fish orders, Cypriniformes was the highest diverse group with 34% species abundance followed by Siluriformes and Perciformes with 24% each. On the other hand, fishes under the orders Beloniformes, Decapoda, and Tetradontiformes were the least abundant (2%). Fish species diversity was found prominent during the monsoon. Based on IUCN conservation index 6(11%), 10(18%) and 7(13%) species in Ghaghat river were identified as critically endangered, endangered and vulnerable respectively. A total 14 types of fishing gear under 8 major groups were found to operate in the studied river, which included some banned gears like gill net and seine net. An effective conservation strategy needs to be developed to stop indiscriminate fishing and to conserve the fish biodiversity in Ghaghat river. Keywords: Fish, biodiversity, ghaghat river, conservation. Introduction barrages, pollution, using of banned fishing gears fish biodiversity is declining (Rahman Bangladesh is blessed with a large number et al., 2016).

  • Celestial Pearl Danio", a New Genus and Species of Colourful Minute Cyprinid Fish from Myanmar (Pisces: Cypriniformes)
THE RAFFLES BULLETIN OF ZOOLOGY 2007 55(1): 131-140 Date of Publication: 28 Feb.2007 © National University of Singapore THE "CELESTIAL PEARL DANIO", A NEW GENUS AND SPECIES OF COLOURFUL MINUTE CYPRINID FISH FROM MYANMAR (PISCES: CYPRINIFORMES) Tyson R. Roberts Research Associate, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT. - Celestichthys margaritatus, a new genus and species of Danioinae, is described from a rapidly developing locality in the Salween basin about 70-80 km northeast of Inle Lake in northern Myanmar. Males and females are strikingly colouful. It is apparently most closely related to two danioins endemic to Inle, Microrasbora rubescens and "Microrasbora" erythromicron. The latter species may be congeneric with the new species. The new genus is identified as a danioin by specializations on its lower jaw and its numerous anal fin rays. The colouration, while highly distinctive, seems also to be characteristically danioin. The danioin notch (Roberts, 1986; Fang, 2003) is reduced or absent, but the danioin mandibular flap and bony knob (defined herein) are present. The anal fin has iiiSVz-lOV: rays. In addition to its distinctive body spots and barred fins the new fish is distinguished from other species of danioins by the following combination of characters: snout and mouth extremely short; premaxillary with an elongate and very slender ascending process; mandible foreshortened; body deep, with rounded dorsal and anal fins; modal vertebral count 15+16=31; caudal fin moderately rather than deeply forked; principal caudal fin rays 9/8; scales vertically ovoid; and pharyngeal teeth conical, in three rows KEY WORDS. - Hopong; principal caudal fin rays; danioin mandibular notch, knob, and pad; captive breeding.

  • Corydoras Tukano, a New Species of Corydoradine Catfish from the Rio Tiquié, Upper Rio Negro Basin, Brazil (Ostariophysi: Siluriformes: Callichthyidae)
Neotropical Ichthyology, 1(2):83-91, 2003 Copyright © 2003 Sociedade Brasileira de Ictiologia Corydoras tukano, a new species of corydoradine catfish from the rio Tiquié, upper rio Negro basin, Brazil (Ostariophysi: Siluriformes: Callichthyidae) Marcelo R. Britto* and Flávio C.T. Lima** A new Corydoras species from the rio Tiquié, upper rio Negro system, Amazonas, Brazil, is described. This taxon was previously referred to as “Corydoras species ‘Asher’”, “Corydoras cf. reynoldsi”, and “Corydoras aff. reynoldsi” in the aquarist literature. The new taxon can be distinguished from all its congeners, except Corydoras reynoldsi and C. weitzmani, by its color pattern, consisting of three large, dark blotches, the first one (“mask”) on the head, across the eye; the second one on the trunk at the level of dorsal fin; and the third one on the trunk at the level of the adipose fin. It can be distinguished from Corydoras reynoldsi mainly by the development of trunk blotches; and from C. weitzmani by the presence of a dusky saddle between the dorsal and adipose fins, the second trunk blotch extending vertically from the adipose-fin base to the anal-fin base, and the presence of four dark stripes in the caudal fin.
