ORDER OF WORSHIP

WELCOME

SILENCE to prepare our hearts

OPENING SONG: “Better is One Day”

INVOCATION

A TIME OF CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: Blessed be the Holy , one God, who forgives all our sin, whose mercy endures forever. C: Amen.

P: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen

(silence for personal reflection and confession)

P: Gracious God, C: have mercy on us. We confess that we have turned from you and given ourselves into the power of sin. We are truly sorry and humbly repent. In your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things we have done and things we have failed to do. Turn us again to you, and uphold us by your Spirit, so that we may live and serve you in newness of life through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. P: God, who is rich in mercy, loved You even when You were dead in sin, and made You alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. May almighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith. C: Amen.

SONG OF PRAISE: “Joyful (The One Who Saves)”

3

PRAYER FOR THE DAY L: Lord Jesus Christ, whose grace always precedes and follows us, help us to forsake all trust in earthly gain and to find in You our heavenly treasure; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen

+ WE HEAR GOD’S WORD +

FIRST LESSON: Isaiah 62:1-7

For Zion's sake I will not keep silent, for Jerusalem's sake I will not remain quiet, till her righteousness shines out like the dawn, her salvation like a blazing torch. The nations will see your righteousness, and all kings your glory; you will be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will bestow. You will be a crown of splendor in the LORD's hand, a royal diadem in the hand of your God. No longer will they call you Deserted, or name your land Desolate. But you will be called Hephzibah, and your land Beulah; for the LORD will take delight in you, and your land will be married. As a young man marries a maiden, so will your sons marry you; as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so will your God rejoice over you. I have posted watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; they will never be silent day or night. You who call on the LORD, give yourselves no rest, and give him no rest till he establishes Jerusalem and makes her the praise of the earth.

PSALM 96

P: Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth. C: Sing to the LORD, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day. P: Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples. C: For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods. P: For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the LORD made the heavens. C: Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and glory are in his sanctuary. P: Ascribe to the LORD, O families of nations, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. C: Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering and come into his courts. P: Worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness; tremble before him, all the earth. C: Say among the nations, "The LORD reigns." The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity.

4

P: Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it; C: Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them. Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy; P: They will sing before the LORD, for he comes, he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples in his truth. ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

SECOND LESSON: Romans 10:11-17

As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame." For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile--the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed our message?" Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.

HOLY GOSPEL: Luke 24:44-53

He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms." Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, "This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high." When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.

THE APOSTLES’ CREED C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian* Church, the communion of , the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

*Christian: the ancient text reads “catholic,” meaning the whole Church as it confesses the wholeness of Christian doctrine
