Just when you thought it was safe to go near the mailbox... It’s the amazing... MutantMutant PopPop C a t a l o g ONCE AGAIN IN THE ULTRA-TRADITIONALIST PHOTOCOPIED FORMAT! #38 This catalog is so far over due that the phrase “late” doesn’t begin to do the matter justice. Rather than spend this entire page offering up a wave of excuses and explanations—some lame, some valid—I’ll just refer anyone who cares to the Mutant Pop website: http://www.mutantpop.com, then click INTERVIEWS and select interview no. 10. That’s as complete a recita- tion of my discouragements and failings as anything.... I’m very sorry for any inconvenience that the “18 months of sloth” has caused. I’m actually a little amazed that I’m back with full avidity doing label stuff again—orders are shipping on time, and new stuff is once again being accumulated for the inventory here. The next wave of SRCDs is, at long last, in preparation— apologies and thanks are especially due to the long-suffering SRCD subscribers who have been patiently twiddling their thumbs waiting for me to get it back in gear. I thank you for your tolerance and kindness. While I may have earned a failing grade for my (non-)effort with Mutant Pop in 2001, the year was not a total loss. There may AttentionAttention DeficitDeficit have been only two MP releases for all of 2001, but they both kicked some major boo-tay... Take, for example, the full-length compact disc by ATTENTION DEFICIT, Adventures in Laissez-Faire Eco- nomics..

This is MutantMutant PopPop free! Mailorder Catalog AH free! http://members.aol.com/mutantpop/ Hey, we rolled the odometer! Hooray for all of us! If I didn’t use the occasion to tweak the typography a little bit, i wouldn’t be doing my job. Thanks to Jeff Wison for the outstanding New Release Info dancing kids drawing, originally created for the the Pizzafest T-shirts. That cat can draw... As you can recall from MP Days of Yore, Pizzafest was gonna be a big show and pizzafeed with participants getting a free shirt, but the venue got paranoid about security, costs escalated, band avail- abilities got shaky, and the event was cancelled. Fortunately, it was replaced by not one but two “Mutant Fest” type of events: Cincinnati, OH in August (hosted by Dave Spodie of The Connie Dungs) and Columbus, OH in October (hosted by Eddie of The Proms). The bottom line is this: if you wanna have pop-punk events to attend this summer, people need to Do It Yourself. Get out there and independently organize your own Mutant Fest-type of deal! It would seem that there would be enough people and bands in the NY/NJ/PA area and possibly also in the Pacific Northwest—in addition to room for shows in the heartland of the pop-punk world, the midwest. There are rumors of a possible Connie Dungs/Dirt Bike Annie mini-tour this summer, how great would it be to tie into that? It’s something for you The 40th Mutant Pop 7”er is now on the street! people in pop-punk bands to think about—make your own fun! MP-39 THE BEAUTYS “A#1 Sex Shop Em- ployee” EP finally made it to my doorstep from Bill Smith Custom Records in LA on January 4.

It’s the incredible free! MutantMutant PopPop AC Mailorder Catalog Well, Snorkel Bob and I survived our June trip around North America. We logged about 8500 miles and saw a lot of cool stuff, including a June 19 show in NYC featuring DIRT BIKE ANNIE and THE KUNG FU MONKEYS. It was a ton of fun! I’ll blab about the trip next time. First I need to try to sell you some records to keep this crappy label alive! The new Mutant Pop single is a faboo EP by Seattle’s amazing WANNA-BES. Originally from Longview, Washing- ton, home of fellow pop-punkers THE JIMMIES, THE WANNA-BES came into the MP orbit via James from MORAL CRUX, who heard them and urged them to send me a tape. Whew! THE WANNA- BES are definitely one of the most exciting three-chord bands doing their thing today! They have a simple formula, so simple that it’s brilliant: instead of trying to ape Joey Ramone’s voice, Chris Workman and the gang melds the enor- mous RAMONES poppy punk guitar sound with high quality, sweet vocals that sound like they would have been at home in the 1960s invasion of British pop. Not to far afield of GENERATION X or MORAL CRUX or some other punk band that can actually sing, in other words...Very crisp, clean vocals and harmonies over a big guitar roar. Like duh, why hasn’t anyone thought of doing that be- fore? They sound absolutely fantastic, appealing to fans of the classic three- chord punk sound without coming across like lame copycat rehash that has been heard five dozen times before..

It’s the incredible free! MutantMutant PopPop AE Mailorder Catalog http://members.aol.com/mutantpop/ After a humongo delay MP-35 THE CHUBBIES “She Wanted More” is finally on the street... Thanks very much for your patience! It was my fault all the way, I dragged my tail and dragged my tail again, no excuses. Anyway, it’s finally time for us to savor two more blasts of Jeannette the King’s power-pop magic—the title track roars and purrs with a growling guitar and sultry vocals, the classic CHUBBIES formula. It’s very fine! We all know that female-fronted power pop is outside of Maximum Rocknroll’s area of coverage these days (whereas boys can go as wussy as they wanna and still draw a review!) but that doesn’t mean you should be ignoring this sub-genre of the pop-punk world or this band in particular. Jeannette Chubbie simply must be counted among the relatively small number of first rank songwriters of the current period. She is that talented! While Jeannette’s guitar work punches hard, The King’s lyrics tend towards the smart and artistic. I’d no sooner give you my detailed interpretation of her work than I would give you my inter- pretation of collage art by Winston Smith or a Sue Coe painting. Listen and derive your own meaning. I will say in general terms that the A-side deals with angst and expectations from a female perspective and the flipside, a song called “Pseudo-Christ,” is an understated howl of anti-religious fury and artis- tic hope.

A Year in the Life of Bottle the Curmudgeon What you are about to read is the book of the blog of the Facebook project I started when my dad died in 2019. It also happens to be many more things: a diary, a commentary on contemporaneous events, a series of stories, lectures, and diatribes on politics, religion, art, business, philosophy, and pop culture, all in the mostly daily publishing of 365 essays, ostensibly about an album, but really just what spewed from my brain while listening to an album. I finished the last essay on June 19, 2020 and began putting it into book from. The hyperlinked but typo rich version of these essays is available at: https://albumsforeternity.blogspot.com/ Thank you for reading, I hope you find it enjoyable, possibly even entertaining. bottleofbeef.com exists, why not give it a visit? Have an album you want me to review? Want to give feedback or converse about something? Send your own wordy words to [email protected] , and I will most likely reply. Unless you’re being a jerk. © Bottle of Beef 2020, all rights reserved. Welcome to my record collection. This is a book about my love of listening to albums. It started off as a nightly perusal of my dad's record collection (which sadly became mine) on my personal Facebook page. Over the ensuing months it became quite an enjoyable process of simply ranting about what I think is a real art form, the album. It exists in three forms: nightly posts on Facebook, a chronologically maintained blog that is still ongoing (though less frequent), and now this book.

Basically, a bunch of us used to write for a punk magazine called B-sides or something like that. Maybe Flipside? It was actually the longest continuously publishing punk rock magazine in America. It may still be. I can't say for sure. All I know PO Box 42124 from my personal experience is that I did an interview with Against All Authority sometime during the summer of 1999, and that interview is set to Los Angeles, CA 90042 run in the next issue.
