Readings - a journal for scholars and readers Volume 1 (2015), Issue 2 Adam Mickiewicz’s “Crimean Sonnets” – a clash of two cultures and a poetic journey into the Romantic self Olga Lenczewska, University of Oxford The paper analyses Adam Mickiewicz’s poetic cycle ‘Crimean Sonnets’ (1826) as one of the most prominent examples of early Romanticism in Poland, setting it across the background of Poland’s troubled history and Mickiewicz’s exile to Russia. I argue that the context in which Mickiewicz created the cycle as well as the final product itself influenced the way in which Polish Romanticism developed and matured. The sonnets show an internal evolution of the subject who learns of his Romantic nature and his artistic vocation through an exploration of a foreign land, therefore accompanying his physical journey with a spiritual one that gradually becomes the main theme of the ‘Crimean Sonnets’. In the first part of the paper I present the philosophy of the European Romanticism, situate it in the Polish historical context, and describe the formal structure of the Crimean cycle. In the second part of the paper I analyse five selected sonnets from the cycle in order to demonstrate the poetic journey of the subject-artist, centred around the epistemological difference between the Classical concept of ‘knowing’ and the Romantic act of ‘exploring’. Introduction The purpose of this essay is to present Adam Mickiewicz's “Crimean Sonnets” cycle – a piece very representative of early Polish Romanticism – in the light of the social and historical events that were crucial for the rise of Romantic literature in Poland, with Mickiewicz as a prize example. -

Life (1788 – 1824) • In 1809 he set out on a tour of Spain, Portugal, Malta, Albania, Greece and the Middle East. • After his return to England in 1812, he published the first ‘two cantos’ of Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage. • He became a literary and social celebrity, but then he left England in 1816, never to return. • He lived in Geneva, where he became a friend of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. • He moved to Venice, where he began his masterpiece, the mock-epic Don Juan. • In 1819 he moved to Milan where he became involved H. This comment reflects the fact that Byron had achieved an immense European rep- utation during his own lifetime, while admirers of his English contemporaries were much more limited in number. Through much of the nineteenth century he contin- ued to be rated as one of the greatest of English poets and the very prototype of literary Bomanticism. His influence was manifested everywhere, among the major poets and novelists (Balzac and Stendhal in France, Pushkin and Dostoyevsky in Russia, and Melville in America), painters (especially Delacroix), and composers (including Beethoven and Berlioz). Yet even as poets, painters, and composers across Europe and the Americas struck Byronic attitudes, Byron's place within the canon of English Bomantic poetry was becoming insecure. -

World Literature According to Wikipedia: Introduction to a DBpedia-Based Framework Christoph Hube,1 Frank Fischer,2 Robert J¨aschke,1,3 Gerhard Lauer,4 Mads Rosendahl Thomsen5 1 L3S Research Center, Hannover, Germany 2 National Research University Higher School of Economics, Moscow, Russia 3 University of Sheffield, United Kingdom 4 G¨ottingenCentre for Digital Humanities, Germany 5 Aarhus University, Denmark Among the manifold takes on world literature, it is our goal to contribute to the discussion from a digital point of view by analyzing the representa- tion of world literature in Wikipedia with its millions of articles in hundreds of languages. As a preliminary, we introduce and compare three different approaches to identify writers on Wikipedia using data from DBpedia, a community project with the goal of extracting and providing structured in- formation from Wikipedia. Equipped with our basic set of writers, we analyze how they are represented throughout the 15 biggest Wikipedia language ver- sions. We combine intrinsic measures (mostly examining the connectedness of articles) with extrinsic ones (analyzing how often articles are frequented by readers) and develop methods to evaluate our results. The better part of our findings seems to convey a rather conservative, old-fashioned version of world literature, but a version derived from reproducible facts revealing an implicit literary canon based on the editing and reading behavior of millions of peo- ple. SOME RECENT DEFINITIONS OF GERMAN ROMANTICISM, OR THE CASE AGAINST DIALECTICS by Robert L. Kahn When the time came for me to be seriously thinking about writing this paper-and you can see from the title and description that I gave myself plenty of leeway-I was caught in a dilemma. In the beginning my plan had been simple enough: I wanted to present a report on the latest develop- ments in the scholarship of German Romanticism. As it turned out, I had believed very rashly and naively that I could carry on where Julius Peter- sen's eclectic and tolerant book Die Wesensbestimmung der deutschen Romantik (Leipzig, 1926), Josef Komer's fragmentary and unsystematic reviews in the Marginalien (Frankfurt a. M., 1950), and Franz Schultz's questioning, though irresolute, paper "Der gegenwartige Stand der Roman- tikforschungM1had left off. As a matter of fact, I wrote such an article, culminating in what I then considered to be a novel definition of German Romanticism. But the more I thought about the problem, the less I liked what I had done. It slowly dawned on me that I had been proceeding on a false course of inquiry, and eventually I was forced to reconsider several long-cherished views and to get rid of certain basic assumptions which I had come to recognize as illusory and prejudicial. It became increasingly obvious to me that as a conscientious literary historian I could not discuss new contributions to Romantic scholarship in vacuo, but that I was under an obligation to relate the spirit of these pronouncements to our own times, as much as to relate their substance to the period in question. -

Mary Shelley Early Life Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin Shelley was born on August 30, 1797, the daughter of two prominent radical thinkers of the Enlightenment. Her mother was the feminist Mary Wollstonecraft, author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, and her father was the political philosopher William Godwin, best known for An Inquiry Concerning Political Justice. Unfortunately, Wollstonecraft died just ten days after her daughter’s birth. Mary was raised by her father and stepmother Mary Jane Clairmont. When she was 16 years old, Mary fell in love with the Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, who visited her father’s house frequently. They eloped to France, as Shelley was already married. They eventually married after two years when Shelley’s wife Harriet committed suicide. The Writing of Frankenstein In the summer of 1816, the Shelleys rented a villa close to that of Lord Byron in Switzerland. The weather was bad (Mary Shelley described it as “wet, ungenial” in her 1831 introduction to Frankenstein), due to a 1815 eruption of a volcano in Indonesia that disrupted weather patterns around the world. Stuck inside much of the time, the company, including Byron, the Shelleys, Mary’s stepsister Claire Clairmont, and Byron’s personal physician John Polidori, entertained themselves with reading stories from Fantasmagoriana, a collection of German ghost stories. Inspired by the stories, the group challenged themselves to write their own ghost stories. The only two to complete their stories were Polidori, who published The Vampyre in 1819, and Mary Shelley, whose Frankenstein went on to become one of the most popular Gothic tales of all time. -

												(1788-1823) Lord Byron Was the Most Famous and Widely Read Poet During
Lord Byron, George Gordon (1788-1823) Lord Byron was the most famous and widely read poet during the Romantic period. In fact, during the 1810s and 1820s, Byron was among the most famous men in all of Europe, if not the entire Western world. Virtually everyone in Europe and America who was able to read English poetry—or who followed current English political events and celebrity scandals—was aware of Lord Byron’s work, life, and public persona. Referred to as “mad, bad and dangerous to know” by his own wife, Byron was as famous for his epic romantic poems as he was for his good looks, humor, and decidedly controversial life. Byron is best known for creating the literary figure of the Byronic hero. Unlike many of his Romantic contemporaries, who were largely concerned with depictions of common people and the natural world, Byron often chose exotic locals and extreme states of being as the subjects of his poetry. While many English Romantic poets drew upon their own lives and experiences for their poems, Byron used some of the more unflattering aspects of his life (including his broken marriage, exile from England, and sexual inclinations) in his poetry, without apology. While Byron was adored by much of the English reading public, many literary critics and members of the English ruling elite felt that Byron’s poems were too radical in terms of his leftist political beliefs, and that he was immoral and politically dangerous to English society, especially given his high social position. Lord Byron was born George Gordon, Lord Byron in 1788.
