INTRODUCTION The presence of microorganisms upon the earth is univer­ sal, and they can be found almost anywhere man may search for them. The fact of their existence has not always been known since they are too small to be observed by the naked eye. However, this does not presume that they are of little Importance, for some are endowed with tremendous potentiali­ ties for good and some for evil. They can survive under a great variety of conditions, and in addition, they multiply so rapidly that the destruction of millions of them la often of no consequence to their survival. The man chiefly responsible for enabling microorganisms to be seen was a Dutch linen merchant turned investigator, AntonJ van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723), who was skilled in the art of making lenses to the extent that he fashioned a type of crude microscope. With such an instrument, van Leeuwenhoek was able to observe microorganisms, which he called "animalcules" (45), Since then, the study of microorganisms has increased in scope, and as a result, the entire overall concept of a bacterial cell is so vast that no single person is able to master it In its entirety. The scope Included in the genesis, lifespan and death of a cell Involves all branches of chem­ istry, as well as physics, genetics, bacteriology, cytology, physiology, and many other branches of science, making it 2 necessary for one who endeavors to work with microorganisms to specialize In a limited area of research and thus add his findings to those of past years to help complete the ever-growing picture. The activity of harmful and undesirable microorganisms has constantly challenged mankind in his attempt to gain mastery over them. Among the primary reasons for this ef­ fort is the control of diseases, many of which are usually attributed to microorganisms. Thus there have been many at­ tempts to destroy these causative agents and therefore rid the world of diseases. This search continues unabated, and has resulted in a tremendous collection of published mate­ rial dealing with methods for controlling or eliminating troublesome and pathogenic microorganisms from the body or wherever they may be found. Chemotherapy is the science of therapeutics which em­ ploys chemical reagents toxic to the organisms, but not toxic (or only slightly so) to the host. Some compounds have Involved a metal atom in their structure and have been very beneficial to man. Metals or their salts have been used for many years since the second century when mercury was employed by the ancients of the medical trade (149), but of more recent note is Salvarsan, an organometallic compound prepared by Paul Ehrlich, which has been used for the treatment of syphilis for many years. Organometallic compounds have been defined very 3 generally as organic compounds which incorporate a metal in their structure. This could include the metal salts of or­ ganic acids, so this generalization usually excludes salts of this kind. A true organometallic compound, in the strict­ est sense, is one in which all normal valences of the metal atom are employed in a oarbon-to-metal bond for each valence. Although a number of thermodynamic properties are available especially for mercury 1, 2 and mercury(II) halides, 2 many other properties that are relevant to environmental and health issues are not known. A number of computational methods can be used for the calculation of a range of properties of compounds, but many of these methods such as SPARC,3 Advanced Chemistry Development 4 and PharmaAlgorithms, 5 cannot deal with any compounds that contain mercury atoms.

ABSTRACT This thesis concerns the generation of geminally functionalised nitroso compounds and their subsequent use in intramolecular ene reactions of types I and II, in order to generate hydroxylamine derivatives which can evolve to the corresponding nitrones. The product nitrones can then be trapped in the inter- or intramolecular mode by a variety of reactions, including 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions, thereby leading to diversity oriented synthesis. The first section comprises the chemistry of the nitroso group with a brief discussion of the current methods for their generation together with the scope and limitations of these methods for carrying out nitroso ene reactions, with different examples of its potential as a powerful synthetic method to generate target drugs. The second chapter describes the results of the research programme and opens with the development of methods for the generation of functionalised nitroso compounds from different precursors including oximes and nitro compounds, using a range of reactants and conditions. The application of these methods in intramolecular nitroso ene reactions is then discussed. Chapter three presents the conclusions which have been drawn from the work presented in chapter two, and provides suggestions for possible directions of this research in the future.

The present thesis concerns the investigation into the electrochemical behaviour of some industrially important organometallic compounds of tin, lead and germanium and development of suitable electrochemical methods for the analysis of these compounds at formula- tion and at trace level. The basic principles of the electrochemical techniques used inthis investigation have been given in the first part of the 'Introduction', while the various factors which control the electrode process have been discussed in the second part of the 'Introduction' in chapter 1. The electrochemical behaviour and analytical determination of some important organotin fungicides and pesticides such as tri-n-butyltin oxide, triphenyl- tin acetate, etc., some antihelminthic compounds such as dibutyltin dilaureate and dibutyltin dimaleate and some widely used PVC-stabilizers such as di-n-Octyltin dithioglycollic acid ester (Irgastab 17 MOK), Irgastab 17M and Irgastab 15 MOR have been described in the following three chapters. For each type of compound a detailed mechanism of the electrochemical process has been proposed and established. The electrochemical behaviour of organolead compounds and of the organogermanium compounds have been described in the next three chapters. In each case, the mechanism of reduction of these compounds has been established and methods 9fc their determina- tion at ordinary and at trace level have been developed. Finally, in the eighth chapter a brief intro- duction into the highspeed liquid chromatographic technique has been given and analysis of organotin compounds by this method using a wall-jet electrode detector has been described.

We now understand that the principles governing the chemistry of living and nonliving things are the same, but the term “organic chemistry” is still around. Today, organic chemistry means the study of compounds that contain bonds between carbon atoms, while inorganic chemistry is the study of all other compounds. Lesson Overview Carbon Compounds The Chemistry of Carbon Carbon atoms have four valence electrons, allowing them to form strong covalent bonds with many other elements (including hydrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, sulfur, and nitrogen).     LEAD 355 CHAPTER 5. POTENTIAL FOR HUMAN EXPOSURE 5.1 OVERVIEW Pb and Pb compounds have been identified in at least 1,287 and 46 sites, respectively, of the 1,867 hazardous waste sites that have been proposed for inclusion on the EPA National Priorities List (NPL) (ATSDR 2019). However, the number of sites evaluated for Pb is not known. The number of sites in each state is shown in Figures 5-1 and 5-2, respectively. Of these 1,287 sites for Pb, 1,273 are located within the United States, 2 are located in the Virgin Islands, 2 are located in Guam, and 10 are located in Puerto Rico (not shown). Number of NPL Sites with Lead Compound Contamination • Pb is an element found in concentrated and easily accessible Pb ore deposits that are widely distributed throughout the world. • The general population may be exposed to Pb in ambient air, foods, drinking water, soil, and dust. For adults, exposure to levels of Pb beyond background are usually associated with occupational exposures. • For children, exposure to high levels of Pb are associated with living in areas contaminated by Pb (e.g., soil or indoor dust in older homes with Pb paint). Exposure usually occurs by hand-to- mouth activities. • As an element, Pb does not degrade. However, particulate matter contaminated with Pb can move through air, water, and soil.
