Steve Rainey, Ph.D. Cassandra A. Storlie, Ph.D. The purpose of this qualitative dissertation was to understand the narratives of gay male individuals who identify as Christian. Although some researchers have focused on conducting studies on religious topics and others on various aspects of the LGBTQ community, there remains a paucity of research that has examined the intersection of these elements for the field of counseling and their implications. Of the limited studies conducted in this combined area, most studies are conceptual in nature or based in quantitative research approaches. The rationale for this study was to capture the narratives of gay males who are Christian and discover themes through the analysis of semi-structured interviews. Therefore, the researcher sought to answer, “What are the narratives of gay males who have a Christian religious identity?” The participants were eight adult males who self-identified as gay, male, and Christian. A narrative analysis was conducted in order to gain, understand, and analyze salient narratives from participants. From this understanding gained through the participants’ narratives, better programing, support, and educational opportunities all related to the professional field of counseling can be generated for gay Christian males. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Successfully scaling this mountain called “dissertation” has been a journey unlike anything I have experienced and a process where I have done much self-reflection. This adventure allowed me to develop my own understanding of self, experience a mosaic of emotions, and establish a sense of worth that is all my own. These accomplishments would not have been possible if it were not for the many people who made this expedition possible. I would like to thank the eight wonderful individuals who agreed to be the participants of this dissertation study. I have heard people say one should never talk about sexuality or religion, and yet these are the exact topics I asked them to discuss. These eight men spoke on these topics through their personal narratives in ways that allowed me to glimpse into their lives, almost tangibly see specific moments, and share what I witnessed with the readers of this study. The amount of transparency and courage exhibited by these participants left me with a sense of awe, humility, and I cannot say thank you enough for what each of you gave. I am forever grateful to my dissertation committee. Thank you to Dr. Alicia Crowe who came alongside me most unexpectedly, assisted in my navigation of narrative analysis, and assured my methodological footing throughout this journey.     1. THE DEANERY STRUCTURE 1.1. The Deanery provides an important two-way line of communication and information between the parishes and the Diocese for collaborative efforts and the sharing of best- practices in a radian. The deanery facilitates the convening of priests (pastors, parochial vicars, active, and retired), deacons, and administrators of parishes of the Deanery, at least four times a year, for meetings to discuss and achieve a uniform application of diocesan policies, programs, and broad implementation of the pastoral initiatives of the Bishop, as well as uniform observance of the diocesan statues and policy. The deanery structure fosters cooperative endeavors and the sharing of resources between parishes and the Diocese as well as between parishes themselves. 1.2. A direct line of communication is to be maintained between the Presbyteral Council and the local deaneries. Each deanery will have an Ex-Officio representative on the Presbyteral Council, who will share information from meetings with the deaneries as well as bring suggestions and concerns to the Presbyteral Council. While each deanery is to meet at least four times a year, some deaneries choose to meet monthly which helps to keep open communication between the Presbyteral Council and the local deaneries. To help inform this conversation, it is important that minutes from the deanery meetings be sent as soon as possible to the Office of the Chancellor for dissemination to Presbyteral Council members. 1.3. There are five deaneries within the Diocese. The Deaneries are divided along county lines, with the exception of Hampden County being split into “East” and “West”.

    7 DIOCESE OF EAST ANGLIA Diocesan policy on THE DEANERY AND THE ROLE OF THE DEAN THE DEANERY How is the universal Catholic Church structured? The whole people of God is a communion of dioceses, each entrusted to the pastoral leadership and care of a bishop. The diocese is then ‘divided into distinct parts or parishes’ (Code of Canon Law, 374.1). Each parish is by nature an integral part of the diocese. What then is a deanery? ‘To foster pastoral care by means of common action, several neighbouring parishes can be joined together in special groupings, such as deaneries’ (Code of Canon Law, 374.2). Each deanery is led by a Dean appointed by the bishop to act in his name. In a scattered diocese such as ours, with many small parishes, working together in deaneries can be very fruitful, not only for the mutual support and care of the clergy, but also for pastoral and spiritual collaboration at local level. In each deanery, there are to be regular meetings of the clergy, priests and deacons, diocesan and religious, of that grouping of parishes. All are expected to attend such meetings and participate as fully as possible in deanery life and work. In each deanery, there are to be regular meetings of lay representatives of each parish with all the clergy of the deanery, so as to facilitate active participation by lay people in local pastoral action and decision-making. When writing about the Episcopal Church, please follow these guidelines: * In the first reference, the full name of the church is preferred: The Episcopal Church. * When referring to church members, the term “Episcopalians” is preferred.     Visual Theologies in Graham Greene’s ‘Dark and Magical Heart of Faith’ by Dorcas Wangui MA (Lancaster) BA (Lancaster) Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2017 Wangui 1 Abstract Visual Theologies in Graham Greene’s ‘Dark and Magical Heart of Faith’ This study explores the ways in which Catholic images, statues, and icons haunt the fictional, spiritual wasteland of Greene’s writing, nicknamed ‘Greeneland’. It is also prompted by a real space, discovered by Greene during his 1938 trip to Mexico, which was subsequently fictionalised in The Power and the Glory (1940), and which he described as ‘a short cut to the dark and magical heart of faith’. This is a space in which modern notions of disenchantment meets a primal need for magic – or the miraculous – and where the presentation of concepts like ‘salvation’ are defamiliarised as savage processes that test humanity. This brutal nature of faith is reflected in the pagan aesthetics of Greeneland which focus on the macabre and heretical images of Christianity and how for Greene, these images magically transform the darkness of doubt into desperate redemption. As an amateur spy, playwright and screen writer Greene’s visual imagination was a strength to his work and this study will focus on how the visuality of Greene’s faith remains in dialogue with debates concerning the ‘liquidation of religion’ in society, as presented by Graham Ward. The thesis places Greene’s work in dialogue with other Catholic novelists and filmmakers, particularly in relation to their own visual-religious aesthetics, such as Martin Scorsese and David Lodge.

Alienation is deconstructed into the domains of blood, money, land, religion, education and history. The authors’ experiences of alienation in each domain are classified according to severity and cultural normativity. The study seeks to determine the manner in which alienation manifests in each domain, and to identify factors which aid or hinder recovery. Alienation in the domain of blood occurs as a result of warfare, illness, racism, ancestral trauma, and the rites of passage of menarche, loss of virginity, and menopause. Money-related alienation is linked to endemic classism, often caused by colonial influence. The authors experienced varying degrees of economic vulnerability to men, depending upon cultural and familial norms. Colonialism, warfare and environmental degradation all contribute to alienation in the domain of land. Women were found to be more susceptible to alienation in the domain of religion due to patriarchal religious constructs.

Yes, in fact, this period is referred to by two names. Sede vacante, in the Church’s official Latin, is translated "vacant see," meaning that the see (or diocese) of Rome is without a bishop. In the 20th century this transition averaged just 17 days. It is also referred to as the Interregnum, a reference to the days when popes were also temporal monarchs who reigned over vast territories. This situation has almost always been created by the death of a pope, but it may also be created by resignation. When were the most recent papal transitions? On April 2, 2005, Pope John Paul II died at the age of 84 after 26 years as pope. On April 19, 2005, German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, formerly prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, was elected to succeed John Paul II. He took the name Pope Benedict XVI. There were two in 1978. On August 6, 1978, Pope Paul VI died at the age of 80 after 15 years as pope. His successor, Pope John Paul I, was elected 20 days later to serve only 34 days. He died very unexpectedly on September 28, 1978, shocking the world and calling the cardinals back to Rome for the second time in as many months.
