B ru n h ou se University of Pennsylvania N the story of the education of the American Indians the Car I lisle Indian School takes high rank. Now remembered chiefly for its record in athletics, the institution made definite contribu tions in the field of Indian education during the period of its existence from 1879 to 1918. As it was the first non-reservation Indian school established, it was forced to develop new methods by experience in order to cope with its peculiar problems. The educational policies evolved at Carlisle became the pattern which many later non-reservation Indian schools in the West and Middle West followed. One of these policies, however, no other school employed to the same extent or with the same success as Carlisle. This was the Outing system. Essentially the Outing system was an apprenticeship for civiliza tion. General Richard Henry Pratt, who originated and ad ministered the plan during the twenty-five years he was in charge of the school, believed that Indian boys and girls should have an opportunity to live in private homes for a period of time in order to gain practical experience in self-support and to learn the ways of civilized living. Since many of the young aborigines came to Carlisle directly from the reservations, they were required to spend at least two years at the school where they received formal classroom instruction as well as training in some trade. -
LGBT History
LGBT History Just like any other marginalized group that has had to fight for acceptance and equal rights, the LGBT community has a history of events that have impacted the community. This is a collection of some of the major happenings in the LGBT community during the 20th century through today. It is broken up into three sections: Pre-Stonewall, Stonewall, and Post-Stonewall. This is because the move toward equality shifted dramatically after the Stonewall Riots. Please note this is not a comprehensive list. Pre-Stonewall 1913 Alfred Redl, head of Austrian Intelligence, committed suicide after being identified as a Russian double agent and a homosexual. His widely-published arrest gave birth to the notion that homosexuals are security risks. 1919 Magnus Hirschfeld founded the Institute for Sexology in Berlin. One of the primary focuses of this institute was civil rights for women and gay people. 1933 On January 30, Adolf Hitler banned the gay press in Germany. In that same year, Magnus Herschfeld’s Institute for Sexology was raided and over 12,000 books, periodicals, works of art and other materials were burned. Many of these items were completely irreplaceable. 1934 Gay people were beginning to be rounded up from German-occupied countries and sent to concentration camps. Just as Jews were made to wear the Star of David on the prison uniforms, gay people were required to wear a pink triangle. WWII Becomes a time of “great awakening” for queer people in the United States. The homosocial environments created by the military and number of women working outside the home provide greater opportunity for people to explore their sexuality. -

Seeking Equality: Family Portraits When New Jersey Passed a Civil Union Law in 2006, Lesbian and Gay Couples Were Told Their Unions Would Be Equal to Marriage
COVER STORY Seeking Equality: Family Portraits When New Jersey passed a civil union law in 2006, lesbian and gay couples were told their unions would be equal to marriage. They aren’t. Meet the brave families fighting for marriage equality in the Garden State. ambda Legal is once again fighting for justice in the New Jersey courts. In 2002, Lambda Legal represented seven Garden State couples in the fight for marriage equality. Four years later the case reached the state’s high court, which ruled unanimously that same-sex couples must be provided all the benefits and responsibilities of marriage, and gave the state legislature 180 days to provide equality. The legislature hastily passed a civil union law in December 2006 and began issuing civil union licenses to lesbian and gay couples in February 2007. However, civil unions are a broken promise. In December 2008 the Civil Union Review Commission, created by the L legislature itself, issued a report showing the many ways civil unions failed to bring equality to gay couples. Legislative efforts followed, and Lambda Legal plaintiffs were among those who testified on behalf of a subsequent marriage equality bill, which New Jersey legislators failed to pass. In 2010, Lambda Legal filed to reactivate the 2002 case, but the New Jersey Supreme Court wanted development of more of a record. This summer we launched our current suit, led by Deputy Legal Director Hayley Gorenberg, on behalf of seven same-sex couples and their children as well as Garden State Equality. Relegating same-sex couples to an inferior civil union status violates both the New Jersey and the federal Constitutions. -

However, many reporters, editors and producers continue to face challenges covering these issues in a complex, often rhetorically charged, climate. Please use the list of living language as a reference resource, but know that no list can be inclusive of all LGBTQ-related terms or encompass all definitions of identities and experiences. General Terms Ally | A person who is not LGBTQ but actively shows support and consistently promotes equality. Closeted | Describes an LGBTQ person who has not disclosed their sexual orientation or gender identity. Coming out | The process in which a person first acknowledges, accepts and appreciates their sexual orientation or gender identity and begins to share that with others. LGBTQ | An acronym for “lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer.” Living openly | A state in which LGBTQ people are comfortably out about their sexual orientation or gender identity – where and when it feels appropriate to them. Outing | Exposing someone’s lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender identity to others without their permission. Outing someone can have serious repercussions on employment, economic stability, personal safety or religious or family situations. Queer | A term people often use to express fluid identities and orientations. Often used interchangeably with "LGBTQ." **Some people do not use this term because of its history as a slur. Allies should be especially thoughtful when using the word “queer.” Questioning | A term used to describe people who are in the process of exploring their sexual orientation or gender identity. * | Some people use an asterisk (*) to indicate expansiveness, such as with trans*. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender History Month and National Coming Out Day – October 11th National Coming Out Day (NCOD) is celebrated on October 11 as an RESOURCES AND EVENTS annual LGBTQ awareness day. NCOD was founded in 1988 by Robert Eichberg and Jean O’Leary. O’Leary was an openly lesbian political leader and head of the National Gay Rights Advocates in Faith and Pride: Trinity Episcopal Los Angeles. Eichberg was a psychologist and founder of the Church and the LGBTQIA+ personal growth workshop, The Experience.
