Joss Whedon has admitted he'd make a major change to Alyson Hannigan's Willow Rosenberg if he could go back and remake Buffy the Vampire Slayer today. While Sarah Michelle Gellar led Buf fy the Vampire Slayer as the titular slayer, Alyson Hannigan's Willow was one of Buffy's best friends and had a major role in all seven seasons. Willow's sexuality was a major arc in later seasons, however, Whedon said he'd have made her bisexual from the very beginning if he could do it all over again. Speaking to Metro, Whedon explained he was pressured into avoiding a bisexual Willow, over fears it would be classed as a "phase." "There are you [sic] things you can't do, thanks to [the society at the time]," Whedon explained. He continued, "It [was] like, 'OK, you can't make Willow bi, you can't say this is a phase, because that's what people do to deny their existence.'" Discussing what he would do differently, Whedon concluded, "So, if I did it now, I'd be like yes she can be bi. Because some people are! But back then it was like, 'No…we're not ready for that.'" Instead, Whedon made the choice to have Willow come out as gay. It was a decision that has led to some confusion in the TV series and the expanded canon of Dark Horse's comics. Willow's sexuality became as much a part of the character as her magic and resulted in Tara's tragic death/Season 6's Dark Willow storyline. Back in Season 4 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer , the introduction of Amber Benson's Tara facilitated Willow's change in sexuality on the show. Prior to dating Tara, Willow had heterosexual romances with other characters, including Xander Harris and Seth Green's Oz. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a pioneering show with Tara and Willow's relationship-- even depicting broadcast TV history's first lesbian sex scene. Still, Whedon's comments about the industry not being ready are indicative of just how much the industry has changed over the years. A modern reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer has been in the works since 2018, with Monica Owusu-Breen attached as showrunner. Rumors suggest that the series will be a continuation that will focus on a new slayer, which means there may not be a new Willow. Hannigan has previously spoken about the reboot and said it could work, but only with Whedon's involvement. She went on to applaud the original series for being ahead of time and still thinks it holds up today. Tom Chapman is a Manchester-based writer with square eyes and the love of a good pun. Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 1 - Joss Whedon (Hardcover) The world has lost its connection to magic, thanks to Buffy’s choices at the end of Season 8, and there are growing pains all around. Having relocated to San Francisco, Buffy discovers a new breed of troubles—zompires, a magical siphon, a sullen Wiccan best friend, and, along with her other twenty-something-type ordeals, a pesky student loan. Then, when Willow goes walkabout, Buffy is suddenly dealing with a pregnancy, body snatching, robots, and a rogue Slayer—all while coming to terms with her relationship with Spike. Series creator Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Once More Whedon wrote, directed and composed the music for this episode in which a mysterious force impels the Scooby Gang with Feeling burst into song. Even Buffy devotees may be hard-pressed to find an episode as off-the-wall as this, as Sunnydale denizens Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Once More players in production numbers in which cast members do their own vocals. Hear Tara sing about her love for Willow! See Xander and Anya perform a duet! Listen to Buffy croon about her lack of life direction! Who's behind the music? Dawn provides the key. Buffy is patrolling in a cemetery at night, but there is something wrong with her and with demons and vampires she meets: they are all singing and dancing. Buffy sings about her life after resurrecting, and the way she feels detached from it. The following morning, the Scoobies reunite at the Magic Box and find out such things have happened to them all. They further learn that it's not just happened to them; all the people in Sunnydale are Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Once More to sing about their inner feelings, as a group nearby performs about cleaning mustard out of a shirt "The Mustard". Willow and Tara leave the discussion to enjoy the day, and Tara sings a love song to Willow about the difference she's made in her life, which leads them to their bedroom "Under Your Spell".

  • Just One Kiss
Just One Kiss Dawn Summers, sister to a Slayer, Key to God-knows-where portals, survivor of Sunnydale, hung up the phone and looked nervously around her bedroom. Well, not really bedroom - the room she was currently inhabiting in the motel that they were staying in, while Giles tried to find them a place to live. After the ‘End of Sunnydale’, as they had taken to calling it, and the deaths of some missed (Anya) and not so missed by anyone but one of the countless Slayers (Spike) people, they had all decided to stick together and continue to fight. Well, Buffy and Giles had decided to move to the new Hellmouth. Xander had shrugged. He had fought, or at least tried to fight, this long and wasn’t going to give up now. Andrew had decided to join them, figuring he could always go to college whereever they turned up – his SAT scores were so astronomically high he was looking at a free ride. Besides, he still felt he owed penance for his actions while with the Trio, and had become firm friends with Xander – once he had realized that, like Larry, he would have no chance of a romantic relationship with the one-eyed ex-carpenter. Willow, her pride in her spell that released all the potentials at an all time high, was the most eager to continue the fight. It had been another quiet conversation, when the others were all doing ‘something’ else, that had given Dawn the courage to action ‘The Plan’. She had asked him why he was still there, what reason he would have to put up with the crap he still got from his so-called-friends, who treated him like a doormat.

  • Joss's Jesus: Christ-Figures in the Whedonverses
Joss’s Jesus: Christ-figures in the Whedonverses Joss’s Jesus: Christ-figures in the Whedonverses Melody Cook Deans’ Distinguished Essay Award recipient Abstract In the fifth season finale ofBuffy the Vampire Slayer (2001), Buffy sacrifices herself to save her sister (and the world) by leaping into a portal with her arms outstretched. In the final scenes of The Cabin in the Woods (2012), Marty refuses to die in order to save the world, instead watching as it crumbles around him. In the former, Buffy is an obvious Christ-figure, while in the latter Marty subverts the trope in his refusal to be a sacrifice. This paper explores the prevalence, meaning, and evolution of the Christ-figure trope in the works of Joss Whedon. Drawing from research in the fields of both Whedon studies and religion and popular culture, I define and set parameters for identifying Christ-figures before exploring the use of the Christ-figure in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Finally, I briefly reflect on the question, what can we learn from the conflicted religiosity of the Whedonverses?. Middle Tennessee State University 19 Scientia et Humanitas: A Journal of Student Research he field of Whedon Studies is dedicated to the academic study of the films, television series, and comic books written, directed, produced,T and/or created by Joss Whedon, including such works as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, and Marvel’s The Avengers. A significant number of books, articles, and conference papers focus on the works of Whedon. Whedon Studies scholar Rhonda Wilcox has coined the term “Whedon- verses” to describe Whedon’s variety of works.

  • Buffy, Dark Romance and Female Horror Fans Lorna Jowett
Buffy, Dark Romance and Female Horror Fans Lorna Jowett When asked, in a 2002 SFX magazine reader’s poll, ‘What’s the thing you’re proudest of in this world?’ Joss Whedon, creator of TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer, answered: ‘Art and feminism; my little show that changed things’. In February 2012 The Guardian newspaper ran an article titled ‘Buffy drives home an important issue for women,’ in which Naomi Alderman suggests that the Buffy season 9 comic series continues to debate significant questions for women (in this case abortion). Whedon always insisted that the series’s premise was an exercise in gender role reversal, and it is now easy to see Buffy as a ‘little show that changed things’ where TV’s representation of female, and male, characters is concerned. Characters like Ripley (debuting in the 1979 film Alien) or Sarah Connor (from The Terminator) may have introduced the female action hero in cinema; Buffy the Vampire Slayer, argues Robert Moore, changed the face of television and Emily Nussbaum observed in the New York Times that ‘The show’s influence can be felt everywhere.’ Specifically Buffy can be positioned as a key influence on the contemporary Dark Romance (sometimes called paranormal romance) publishing and media boom. Just as Buffy draws on previous female action heroes from comic books, movies, fiction, and TV, Dark Romances from Twilight movies to HBO television show True Blood offer variations on Buffy’s complex representation of romance, sexuality and gender. Now that VILF (Vampire I’d Like to Fuck) has entered the lexicon, the Dark Romance (in which a female protagonist falls in love with a dark hero, usually a vampire or werewolf, though sometimes another supernatural male) has truly arrived.

Nicholas David Peat February 2017 Lancaster University !2 Dedication To my parents and Bernadette. !3 Acknowledgements Discussing the German language, Mark Twain once claimed that “a gifted person ought to learn English (barring spelling and pronouncing) in 30 hours, French in 30 days, and German in 30 years”. After five-and-a-half years of analysing German dialogue, encompassing two supervisors and one diagnostic laparoscopy, I can see his point: analysing German dialogue in a PhD has proven to be a very long marathon, encompassing surprise diversions (the demise of an 18 month-programme in Siegen was a classic of the genre) and shocking twists (deadline coming up? Here’s appendicitis!). But only now, as I inch across that finish line, do I see the myriad of people without whom I would have fallen many times over. To begin, I would like to thank so many people within Lancaster University. First thanks go to Marjorie Wood from LAEL, for always being completely sensible and sympathetic, where and when I need her (and having exemplary taste in sweets). Ann Thomas of DELC, who has known me for a decade, has never been anything other than amazing every time I’ve seen her; the thing I have always done when reaching Lancaster is head straight for Ann’s office for her unique blend of common sense and kindness.
