The Acts of the Apostles, 4: 32-35, states very clearly: The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common. With great power the apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great favor was accorded them all. There was no needy person among them, for those who owned property or houses would sell them, bring the proceeds of the sale, and put them at the feet of the apostles, and they were distributed to each according to need. Yes, it was a happy place, filled with faith-filled and loving people. Truly, it is a living and concrete image of the community of followers of Jesus. In our mind, we dream to live there and belong to that group. In order to create those communities of faith, trust, and loving concern for God and one another, the Apostles lived, testified, and proclaimed the joy of the resurrection. Today's Gospel, John 20: 19-31, tells us that Christ, after his resurrection, appeared to his disciples. Thomas however refused to believe unless he could see the Lord with his own eyes. A week later Thomas saw the Risen Lord and was allowed to touch the mark of the nails. Thomas, like other disciples, saw, believed, and witnessed the resurrection of Jesus to the whole world. In the first letter to his congregation, St. John said: Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God, and everyone who loves the Father loves also the one begotten by him. In this way we know that we love the children of God when we love God and obey his commandments. For the love of God is this, that we keep his commandments. (John 5: 1-3) We also belong to the community of people who have faith in Christ. We may not hesitate to profess our faith in God. We can say that we always lay our trust in the Lord. But when talking about love, who among us dare to sacrifice for others in a selfless way? How many of us can honestly say that we put God first, before all other things, in our lives? Let us ask ourselves: Have I loved enough yet that people can see me belonging to the community of love and of a loving God? Fr. FAMILIES SHARE STORIES ON THEIR EXPERIENCE OF “AMORIS LAETITIA” On March 25, the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life, in collaboration with the Dicastery for Communication, will inaugurate an initiative dedicated to the Apostolic Exhortation, five years after its publication. Ten families from around the world will offer their video testimonies reflecting on the papal document. Cardinal Farrell calls it "an invitation to understand today’s challenges and the blessings of family life." By Alessandro De Carolis "The Joy of Love experienced by families is also the joy of the Church." The opening words of the Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia , which Pope Francis promulgated on 19 March 2016, express what the prevailing sentiment of the universal Church is toward the "domestic church" of the family. With great care and depth, this papal document enter into the "flesh" of family fragilities and then revive the beauty of these bonds according to God's plan. Celebrating 5th anniversary Five years later, the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life has decided to celebrate this anniversary and launch a special year desired by Pope Francis and inspired by Amoris laetitia by offering a series of initiatives. These include a space for the witness of ten families from various geographical backgrounds every month, starting 25 March, where they share details about their lives and their faith, and examine their own experience with regard to the teachings of the Pope, who in each episode of the series will reflect on some part of the document. The videos, accompanied by a downloadable pastoral aid, are produced in collaboration with the Dicastery for Communication, which will publish them in five languages on the Vatican News portal, as well as the website www.amorislaetitia.va. The Pope's gift In presenting the project, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, who heads the Vatican Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life, says these video testimonies are a "gift that Pope Francis has given to each of us." They are also "a moment to remember that this great teaching is relevant in our world today." "I hope and pray," Cardinal Farrell concludes, "that we can all come together to hear, to feel and to understand the importance of this document for our world today. This, in the history of humanity, is a moment that requires the commitment of each of us to better understand the challenges and blessings of family life, for the good of humanity and society at large." 4 A Novena to St. Catherine of Siena Nine Days of Prayer and Spiritual Reflection Hosted by Catholic Communities Around Vicariate II of the Archdiocese of Chicago April 20 – April 28, 2021 Join us in-person or live stream as we pray the first day of the Novena at Holy Child Jesus Parish 2324 W. Chase Av., Chicago Tuesday, April 20, 2021 7:00 PM Fr. Phi Nguyen, Pastor, will lead us in prayer. Bishop Mark Bartosic will join us in prayer. This nine-day journey to St. Catherine of Siena’s feast day on April 29 is the second Novena by Catholic laity to unite the faithful in prayer for the guidance of the Holy Spirit in healing and atonement for the clergy sex abuse crisis. St. Catherine of Siena is known for her love of Christ and his Church. Her love was personal and mystical, culminating in her receiving the Stigmata of Jesus. Her love was also practical, expressing itself in advocacy for moral and administrative Church reform. She appealed personally to Church leaders, including Pope Gregory XI, to enact the reforms needed to rekindle faith within the Church, and the love of Christ that produces obedience to him and his teachings. Her advocacy was not politically motivated but flowed from her communion with Christ. She lived in the 14th century, a time not unlike our own. She died at the early age of 33. • POPE FRANCIS AS a GLOBAL ACTOR Where Politics and Theology Meet
POPE FRANCIS AS A GLOBAL ACTOR Where Politics and Theology Meet EDITED BY ALYNNA J. LYON, CHRISTINE A. GUSTAFSON, AND PAUL CHRISTOPHER MANUEL Palgrave Studies in Religion, Politics, and Policy Series editor Mark J. Rozell Schar School of Policy and Government George Mason University Arlington, VA, USA A generation ago, many social scientists regarded religion as an anachronism, whose social, economic, and political importance would inevitably wane and disap- pear in the face of the inexorable forces of modernity. Of course, nothing of the sort has occurred; indeed, the public role of religion is resurgent in US domestic politics, in other nations, and in the international arena. Today, religion is widely acknowledged to be a key variable in candidate nominations, platforms, and elections; it is recognized as a major influence on domestic and foreign policies. National religious movements as diverse as the Christian Right in the United States and the Taliban in Afghanistan are important factors in the internal politics of par- ticular nations. Moreover, such transnational religious actors as Al-Qaida, Falun Gong, and the Vatican have had important effects on the politics and policies of nations around the world. Palgrave Studies in Religion, Politics, and Policy serves a growing niche in the discipline of political science. This subfield has proliferated rapidly during the past two decades, and has generated an enormous amount of scholarly studies and journalistic coverage. Five years ago, the journal Politics and Religion was created; in addition, works relating to religion and politics have been the subject of many articles in more general academic journals.

  • On the Touch-Event Theopolitical Encounters
ON THE TOUCH-EVENT Theopolitical Encounters Valentina Napolitano Abstract: This article addresses the ‘touch-event’ as a mediated affective encounter that pivots around a tension between intimacy and distance, seduction and sovereignty, investment and withdrawal. Through a reread- ing of the Pauline event of conversion to Christianity, it argues that an analysis of the evolving significance of touch-events for Catholic liturgy and a religious congregation shows the theopolitical as always already constituted within an economy of enfleshed virtues. Focusing on contem- porary examples of touch-events from the life of Francis, the first pope from the Americas, as well as from fieldwork among a group of female Latin American Catholic migrants in Rome, I argue for a closer examina- tion of touch-events in order to grasp some of their theopolitical, radical, emancipatory, and, in some contexts, subjugating effects. Keywords: Atlantic Return, economies of virtues, incarnation, Pauline event, Pope Francis, sovereignty, theopolitics, touch-event If one googles the word ‘touch-event’, what comes up is a definition of a keyword in the Java programming language—TouchEvent—that governs the interface between a given piece of software and a user’s contact with a piece of touch-sensitive hardware (e.g., a touchscreen or touchpad).1 Although this use of the term is distinct in obvious ways from my own theorization of touch- event in what follows, the Java keyword ‘TouchEvent’ nevertheless names an infrastructural modality that is at once a tactile, digital encounter (a move- ment) and a condition for its apprehension (a code). Anthropologists and histo- rians have written at some length about touch—chief touch, royal touch, papal touch, ritual and healing touch—and the connection between the king’s two bodies in medieval and early modern concepts of sovereignty (Firth 1940; Grae- ber and Sahlins 2017; Kantorowicz [1957] 1997).

  • Pope Creates 13 New Cardinals, Including Washington Archbishop
Pope creates 13 new cardinals, including Washington archbishop VATICAN CITY (CNS) — One by one 11 senior churchmen, including two U.S. citizens — Cardinals Wilton D. Gregory of Washington and Silvano M. Tomasi, a former Vatican diplomat — knelt before Pope Francis to receive their red hats, a cardinal’s ring and a scroll formally declaring their new status and assigning them a “titular” church in Rome. But with the consistory Nov. 28 occurring during the COVID-19 pandemic, Pope Francis actually created 13 new cardinals. Cardinals Jose F. Advincula of Capiz, Philippines, and Cornelius Sim, apostolic vicar of Brunei, did not attend the consistory because of COVID-19 travel restrictions; however, they are officially cardinals and will receive their birettas and rings at a later date, the Vatican said. In his homily at the prayer service, Pope Francis told the new cardinals that “the scarlet of a cardinal’s robes, which is the color of blood, can, for a worldly spirit, become the color of a secular ’eminence,'” the traditional title of respect for a cardinal. If that happens, he said, “you will no longer be a pastor close to your people. You will think of yourself only as ‘His Eminence.’ If you feel that, you are off the path.” For the cardinals, the pope said, the red must symbolize a wholehearted following of Jesus, who willingly gave his life on the cross to save humanity. The Gospel reading at the service, Mark 10:32-45, included the account of James and John asking Jesus for special honors. “Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left,” they said.
