  • POPE FRANCIS AS a GLOBAL ACTOR Where Politics and Theology Meet
POPE FRANCIS AS A GLOBAL ACTOR Where Politics and Theology Meet EDITED BY ALYNNA J. LYON, CHRISTINE A. GUSTAFSON, AND PAUL CHRISTOPHER MANUEL Palgrave Studies in Religion, Politics, and Policy Series editor Mark J. Rozell Schar School of Policy and Government George Mason University Arlington, VA, USA A generation ago, many social scientists regarded religion as an anachronism, whose social, economic, and political importance would inevitably wane and disap- pear in the face of the inexorable forces of modernity. Of course, nothing of the sort has occurred; indeed, the public role of religion is resurgent in US domestic politics, in other nations, and in the international arena. Today, religion is widely acknowledged to be a key variable in candidate nominations, platforms, and elections; it is recognized as a major influence on domestic and foreign policies. National religious movements as diverse as the Christian Right in the United States and the Taliban in Afghanistan are important factors in the internal politics of par- ticular nations. Moreover, such transnational religious actors as Al-Qaida, Falun Gong, and the Vatican have had important effects on the politics and policies of nations around the world. Palgrave Studies in Religion, Politics, and Policy serves a growing niche in the discipline of political science. This subfield has proliferated rapidly during the past two decades, and has generated an enormous amount of scholarly studies and journalistic coverage. Five years ago, the journal Politics and Religion was created; in addition, works relating to religion and politics have been the subject of many articles in more general academic journals.

  • On the Touch-Event Theopolitical Encounters
ON THE TOUCH-EVENT Theopolitical Encounters Valentina Napolitano Abstract: This article addresses the ‘touch-event’ as a mediated affective encounter that pivots around a tension between intimacy and distance, seduction and sovereignty, investment and withdrawal. Through a reread- ing of the Pauline event of conversion to Christianity, it argues that an analysis of the evolving significance of touch-events for Catholic liturgy and a religious congregation shows the theopolitical as always already constituted within an economy of enfleshed virtues. Focusing on contem- porary examples of touch-events from the life of Francis, the first pope from the Americas, as well as from fieldwork among a group of female Latin American Catholic migrants in Rome, I argue for a closer examina- tion of touch-events in order to grasp some of their theopolitical, radical, emancipatory, and, in some contexts, subjugating effects. Keywords: Atlantic Return, economies of virtues, incarnation, Pauline event, Pope Francis, sovereignty, theopolitics, touch-event If one googles the word ‘touch-event’, what comes up is a definition of a keyword in the Java programming language—TouchEvent—that governs the interface between a given piece of software and a user’s contact with a piece of touch-sensitive hardware (e.g., a touchscreen or touchpad).1 Although this use of the term is distinct in obvious ways from my own theorization of touch- event in what follows, the Java keyword ‘TouchEvent’ nevertheless names an infrastructural modality that is at once a tactile, digital encounter (a move- ment) and a condition for its apprehension (a code). Anthropologists and histo- rians have written at some length about touch—chief touch, royal touch, papal touch, ritual and healing touch—and the connection between the king’s two bodies in medieval and early modern concepts of sovereignty (Firth 1940; Grae- ber and Sahlins 2017; Kantorowicz [1957] 1997).

  • POLITICS--The Science of the Possible
BOOK 8 “. AND GULLIVER RETURNS” --In Search of Utopia-- HOW WE MANIPULATE AND ARE MANIPULATED --POLITICS--The Science of the Possible-- by Lemuel Gulliver XVI as told to Jacqueline Slow © 2010 ISBN 978-0-9823076-0-1 Dear friends—Obviously I wrote this series to be read from Book 1 to the end, but silly me! Readers often begin with what sounds interesting to them. This may leave them unaware of the characters, my friends and I. So let me introduce us. We were boyhood friends, as wild and as close as geese heading south for the winter. But our university educations split us philosophically like a drop of Quicksilver hitting the floor. But like those balls of mercury, when brought together, they again become one. As have we. Ray became a Catholic priest and moved far to the right of where our teenage liberalism had bound us. Ray calls himself a neo-conservative. We think he is a reactionary. Lee slid to the left of our adolescent leanings, and somewhere along the line became an atheist. Lee is a lawyer. Concannon, Con for short, retired from his very successful business. I guess his business experience moved him a bit to the right, to conservatism—a conservative just to the right of the middle. Then there’s me. I think I’m pretty much a middle of the roader—except for my passion to save our planet by reducing our population before global warming, massive poverty and far-reaching famines decimate our humanity. Hope this introduction makes our discussions make a bit more sense.
