Oct 05, robin friedman rated it it was amazing. Learning About Cats Until I got my most recent cat about two years ago, I had forgotten how much I loved the little creatures. They bring something special to life. I pounced on the opportunity to read this new book, "The Cat Encyclopedia: The Definitive Visual Guide" when I found it at the local library weeks after its publication. Kim Dennis-Bryan, The Cat Encyclopedia, an authority, such as there is, on cats, is credited as the The Cat Encyclopedia editor of the volume. The Cat Encyclopedia is a large, heavy coffee-tab Learning About Cats Until I got my most recent cat about two years ago, I had The Cat Encyclopedia how much I loved the little creatures. The Cat Encyclopedia is a large, heavy coffee-table sized book of pages on glossy paper. It is The Cat Encyclopedia pleasure to read but large. As befitting its subject, the book can be a bit difficult to handle. Although it conveys a wealth of information, the book is fun and enjoyable. After all, who wants a dry boring tome when it comes to cats? The emphasis is on pictures of cats, mostly in color and well reproduced. The central section of the book consists of photographs of over breeds of cats, both shorthair and longhair, with a discussion of the origin and characteristics of each breed. I was surprised to learn of the recent origin of many of the breeds. The beloved and common domestic short or longhairs remain The Cat Encyclopedia the center of the world of cats and receive their deserved attention. The book offers an interesting and readable account of the biological evolution of the domestic cat and of cat biology. Then, the encyclopedia gives The Cat Encyclopedia overview of the sometimes tortured relationship between cats and humans they were persecuted in Europe during the Middle Ages. A further section of the Encyclopedia discusses cats in human culture, including religion, folklore, art, religion, and, if you will, the Internet. Following the large gallery of photos of cat breeds, the book The Cat Encyclopedia with a long useful discussion of cat The Cat Encyclopedia, from acquiring a cat, to enjoying it, to taking care of the animal in health and in sickness. The book reminded me of the difference of getting to know a cat by living with one and getting to know about cats by reading. Knowing about the animal is no substitute for living with a cat but it is a treat and informative just the same. Much of the material in this book was published only about a The Cat Encyclopedia ago as "The Complete Cat Breed Book". For those not having that book, it is worth having this new, expanded volume. This book will delight lovers of cats. Robin Friedman Dec 15, Erika Lesley rated it it was amazing. Those that have access to the outdoors display very similar territorial and social activity as other wild feline species, and disappear into that secret world right after they leave our doorstep. • Printable Breed Introduction
TICA Khaomanee Breed Introduction www.tica.org General Description: With one blue eye and one eye ranging from copper through yellow to green, this shining white cat from Thailand captures the imagination. Khaomanee (sometimes seen as Khao Manee) means White Gem and is thought to have been a favorite in the royal palaces. A heart- shaped face with high cheekbones and a brilliant white coat like diamonds belie the naughtiness of these stunning cats, but their devotion to you will have you admiring the naughtiness that these intelligent cats so enjoy as they entertain you with their antics. History: Several related breeds have their origins, ancient origins, in Thailand. The Siamese (Wichien-maat), the Burmese (Suphalak), the Korat (Dork Lao) and the Khaomanee. The first three breeds are well-established in the West but the Khaomanee has remained a well-kept secret in its native Thailand. Like the other breeds, we find references to the Khaomanee in the Tamra Maew (an ancient collection of Thai cat poems from 1350). Although in that text, it is called the Khao Plort. While the eyes were originally referred to as the color of mercury, the eye color was changed to reflect the odd-eyed cats that were considered lucky and also to have the yellow eyes like canary diamonds that breeders also favored. Interest in these striking cats has grown in the West, and in 1999, Colleen Freymouth imported the first Khaomanee, Sripia, from Thailand to the US. She also imported a male and bred the first Khaomanee litter in North America. Janet Poulsen (Odyssey cattery) exported the first Khaomanee to the UK, and interest in the breed is growing there, as breeders import more of these stunning cats from Thailand to continue developing the breed.

Simultaneously, this resulted in a considerable spread of hereditary diseases and phenomena associated with inbreeding depression. Results: Our cluster analysis of kinship and inbreeding coefcients suggests that the Thai or traditional Siamese cat could be considered as a subpopulation of the Siamese cat, which shares common ancestors, although they are con- sidered as separate breeds.
