  • Printable Breed Introduction
TICA Khaomanee Breed Introduction www.tica.org General Description: With one blue eye and one eye ranging from copper through yellow to green, this shining white cat from Thailand captures the imagination. Khaomanee (sometimes seen as Khao Manee) means White Gem and is thought to have been a favorite in the royal palaces. A heart- shaped face with high cheekbones and a brilliant white coat like diamonds belie the naughtiness of these stunning cats, but their devotion to you will have you admiring the naughtiness that these intelligent cats so enjoy as they entertain you with their antics. History: Several related breeds have their origins, ancient origins, in Thailand. The Siamese (Wichien-maat), the Burmese (Suphalak), the Korat (Dork Lao) and the Khaomanee. The first three breeds are well-established in the West but the Khaomanee has remained a well-kept secret in its native Thailand. Like the other breeds, we find references to the Khaomanee in the Tamra Maew (an ancient collection of Thai cat poems from 1350). Although in that text, it is called the Khao Plort. While the eyes were originally referred to as the color of mercury, the eye color was changed to reflect the odd-eyed cats that were considered lucky and also to have the yellow eyes like canary diamonds that breeders also favored. Interest in these striking cats has grown in the West, and in 1999, Colleen Freymouth imported the first Khaomanee, Sripia, from Thailand to the US. She also imported a male and bred the first Khaomanee litter in North America. Janet Poulsen (Odyssey cattery) exported the first Khaomanee to the UK, and interest in the breed is growing there, as breeders import more of these stunning cats from Thailand to continue developing the breed.

  • Singapura History
Singapura History The Singapura is the smallest registered breed in CFA and TICA and is known for its’ huge eyes and ears. Their look is both beguiling and entrancing, much like the mystery that surrounds their beginnings. Many stories have evolved over time about the beginnings of the “River Cats” or “Drain Cats” or “Sewer Cats” as they are called in Singapore. The name Singapura is the Malaysian word for Singapore. Their nicknames evolved from the fact that the people of Singapore found them by the Singapore River and in sewer drains emanating from this river. The theory is that a cat of this type has existed in Singapore for at least 300 years. Thereby, the Singapura could be considered an ancient breed. However, many variations of this cat exist in Singapore and few resemble the Singapura as we have defined the Standard in either CFA or TICA. Cats of the Malay Peninsula are tabbies, torties and bicolours often with bobbed and/or knotted tails. The closest relationship to the present day Singapura is a picture from earlier times of an ivory cream cat with a bobbed tail and a purported recorded birth of a bobtailed Singapura kitten in a 2002 litter. The apparent evolution of change for the Singapura as we know it today began with Tommy and Hal Meadows who introduced the breed to the United States. Since there was a discrepancy about the origination of the breed here in 1990, CFA investigated the breed evolution here at the request of the Singapura Breed Club. At the time, it was established that Hal Meadows sent back to the United States four local cats (1 male and 3 females) from Singapore during a business trip there in 1971.

  • No Room to Swing a Cat? Animal Treatment and Urban Space in Singapore
No Room to Swing a Cat? Animal Treatment and Urban Space in Singapore Ying-kit Chan* Since Singapore’s independence in 1965, the People’s Action Party government has launched an extensive urban planning program to transform the island into a modern metropolis. This paper discusses human-animal relations and the manage- ment of stray cats in postcolonial Singapore. In exploring the perceptions and handling of stray cats in Singapore, I argue that stray cats became an urban “prob- lem” as a result of the government’s public-health regime, urban renewal projects, and attempts to fashion itself and Singapore for international tastes, and that cat activists are the main agents of rebuilding connections between animals and every- day urban life. In particular, I analyze how cat-welfare associations and individual citizens assume functions that the government has been loath to perform unless absolutely necessary. Keywords: animal geographies, human-animal relations, cats, Singapore, urban space Introduction Singapore, the “Garden City,” has undergone a massive program of urban reform, renewal, and resettlement since independence in 1965. The government of the People’s Action Party, which has enjoyed uninterrupted rule, dispersed the population of the overcrowded central-town district to peripheral “new towns,” which were built on land appropriated from old village communities. Through education, land reclamation, military conscription, and public housing, the government created a disciplined industrial work- force (now housed in flats built by the Housing Development Board, or HDB, and linked to factories and offices via highways) along Fordist lines, thus engineering tremendous changes in the human landscape of Singapore (Barr and Skrbis 2008; Chua 1997; Dobbs 2003; Loh 2007; Wee 2007).
