Universe Accelerator in 2017 and 2018. NiNoKo Universe Accelerator will work with skilled and experienced tutors, who will present high-level We will use the unique opportunity to invite all masterclasses as well as supervising workshops participants to take full advantage of the deeply and mentorship in cooperation with a wide range creative environment around The Animation of local, regional, and international partners who Workshop. General Director of The Animation Workshop VIA University College

The NiNoKo Universe Accelerator is an innovative and transnational project that aims to bring visionary and entrepreneurial artists and concept designers from Japan, South Korea and Scandinavia together. Although the three territories are very far apart geographically, there is a mutual respect and curiosity towards the other’s culture and traditions. What can create a better understanding between people than working together with the ambition to identify and realize yet unknown visions? It is our hope that the results of NiNoKo Universe Accelerator will be new exciting IPs that target the TERRITORIES

Endorsed by the Japanese Embassy in Denmark as the official event of the 150th Anniversary of the establishment of Japanese & Danish diplomatic relations, The Animation Workshop ran in 2017 an event called Kawaii & Epikku. It aimed to be the first and largest exposition in Denmark about Anime, Manga and 360° productions.

As a part of this great event, NipponNordic 2017 supported the creative initiatives of its participants, following the global philosophy of Kawaii & Epikku to enhance knowledge and cultural exchanges between the Japanese and Danish/European professionals of the creative industry. Similarly to its previous editions in 2017 and 2018, the third edition will continue the successful program in the same innovative mentality with a new name called NiNoKo. In 2019, the Universe Accelerator broadens its horizons and so besides Danish and Japanese, Scandinavian and South Korean talents will join as well, celebrating the 60th Anniversary of diplomatic relations between Denmark and Korea.

This Universe Accelerator has been created to develop connections between different countries because of the big potential for more cooperation and co-production between these territories: TERRITORIES 7

There are many examples of Danish commitment to innovation, storytelling and design – from the fairy tale storyteller Hans Christian Andersen to a long list of world-renowned companies and brands of Danish origin, such as LEGO, Bang & Olufsen and Royal Copenhagen. Denmark (and Europe in general) has a strong and constantly evolving animation and games tradition with a special focus on producing cost effective 3D feature . Besides that the game industry in Denmark is known to drive innovation on a global scale. Impactful and popular Danish games include titles such as the Hitman series, Limbo and Subway Surfers. All of them are testimonies to Denmark’s industrial traditions, know-how and skills. As the Danish game industry is searching for new markets to penetrate, the Japanese market has become of great interest to Nordic developers, especially since Japan is looking towards Denmark for nordic designed products.

Japan has an old and well-established animation culture, especially in 2D, which has had an immense impact on western markets over the last 20+ years. Western productions, however, have a hard time entering the Japanese market. Despite Japan excelling in 2D animation, it is falling behind when it comes to 3D animated features. In regards to video games, the Japanese industry has been an inspiration to Western games for decades, therefore a collaboration between Japanese and Western entertainment industries seems to be natural and inevitable culmination of all these years spent working and creating content independently.

South Korean animation and games industry have become key members of the international market for the last 10 years. The fast growing Korean creative network shows great interest in technical innovations and international collaborations. This interest makes Korea a relevant third territory to join the Universe Accelerator.

NiNoKo looks forward to sharing new ideas and exploring the possibilities that Korea will bring to the residency. CONCEPT
