Macciomei: Co-optation of the American Dream Independent cinema has been an aspect of the American film industry since the inception of the art form itself. The aspects and perceptions of independent film have altered drastically over the years, but in general it can be used to describe American films produced and distributed outside of the Hollywood major studio system. But as American film history has revealed time and time again, independent studios always struggle to maintain their freedom from the Hollywood industrial complex. American independent cinema has been heavily integrated with major Hollywood studios who have attempted to tap into the niche markets present in filmgoers searching for theatrical experiences outside of the mainstream. From this, we can say that the American independent film industry has a long history of co-optation, acquisition, and the stifling of competition from the major film studios present in Hollywood, all of whom pose a threat to the autonomy that is sought after in these markets by filmmakers and film audiences.

Al Diaz and another artist appended a copyright symbol to works in this medium which were attributed to SAMO. The outlines of dancing bodies frequently appeared in Keith Haring’s works in this medium. A hard-to-decipher form of this medium is called (*) “wildstyle,” and it was practiced by Jean-Michel Basquiat. A notable artist in this medium uses a stencil technique to create works like one of a bandana-wearing man lobbing a bouquet of flowers. Creators of these artworks often sign them with “tags.” For 10 points, name this art form practiced by Banksy that often uses spray paint and is viewed by some as vandalism. ANSWER: graffiti (or graffito; prompt on “murals;” prompt on “street art”) 2. Sidney Fox showed that these molecules spontaneously polymerized when exposed to lava. A notably racemic mixture of these molecules was found on the Murchison meteorite, and they are created in the Strecker synthesis. Filling a (*) flask with a chemical mixture and applying electric sparks managed to generate these molecules in the Miller-Urey experiment, and one of these molecules is attached to the 3-prime end of tRNA molecules. Three nucleotides form a codon for one of these molecules, and the 20 major ones are classified by their “-R” group.

PIECES OF A WOMAN Directed by Kornél Mundruczó Starring Vanessa Kirby, Shia LaBeouf, Molly Parker, Sarah Snook, Iliza Shlesinger, Benny Safdie, Jimmie Falls, Ellen Burstyn **WORLD PREMIERE – In Competition – Venice Film Festival 2020** **OFFICIAL SELECTION – Gala Presentations – Toronto International Film Festival 2020** Press Contacts: US: Julie Chappell | [email protected] International: Claudia Tomassini | [email protected] Sales Contact: Linda Jin | [email protected] 1 SHORT SYNOPSIS When an unfathomable tragedy befalls a young mother (Vanessa Kirby), she begins a year-long odyssey of mourning that touches her husband (Shia LaBeouf), her mother (Ellen Burstyn), and her midwife (Molly Parker). Director Kornél Mundruczó (White God, winner of the Prix Un Certain Regard Award, 2014) and partner/screenwriter Kata Wéber craft a deeply personal meditation and ultimately transcendent story of a woman learning to live alongside her loss. SYNOPSIS Martha and Sean Carson (Vanessa Kirby, Shia LaBeouf) are a Boston couple on the verge of parenthood whose lives change irrevocably during a home birth at the hands of a flustered midwife (Molly Parker), who faces charges of criminal negligence. Thus begins a year-long odyssey for Martha, who must navigate her grief while working through fractious relationships with her husband and her domineering mother (Ellen Burstyn), along with the publicly vilified midwife whom she must face in court. From director Kornél Mundruczó (White God, winner of the Prix Un Certain Regard Award, 2014), with artistic support from executive producer Martin Scorsese, and written by Kata Wéber, Mundruczó’s partner, comes a deeply personal, searing domestic aria in exquisite shades of grey and an ultimately transcendent story of a woman learning to live alongside her loss.

Donahue v. Artisan Entertainment 2002 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 5930 United States District Court for the Southern District of New York April 5, 2002 HEATHER DONAHUE, MICHAEL C. WILLIAMS, JOSHUA G. LEONARD, Plaintiffs, against ARTISAN ENTERTAINMENT, INC., ARTISAN PICTURES INC, Defendants. 00 Civ. 8326 (JGK). 2002 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 5930. April 3, 2002, Decided. April 5, 2002, Filed. Counsel: For plaintiffs: Philip R. Hoffman, Pryor, Cashman, Sherman & Flynn, New York, New York. For defendants: Andrew J. Frack-man, O’Melveny & Myers, New York, New York. Before John G. Koeltl, United States District Judge. JOHN G. KOELTL, District Judge. Plaintiffs Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams, and Joshua G. Leonard bring this action against defendants Artisan Entertainment, Inc., and Artisan Pictures Inc. (collectively, “Artisan”) for breach of contract and violations of New York Civil Rights Law § 51, § 43(a) of the Lanham Act, 15 U.S.C. § 1125(a), and New York common law regarding unfair competition. The plaintiffs, who played the three central characters in the film “The Blair Witch Project” (“Blair Witch 1”), complain that their names and likenesses from that film, or other images of them, have been used without their approval in a sequel called “Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows” (“Blair Witch 2”), as well as in promotions for that sequel and in other unauthorized ways. The defendants claim that each of the plaintiffs authorized these uses in their original acting contracts. The defendants now move for summary judgment on all claims. I The standard for granting summary judgment is well established. Summary judgment may not be granted unless “the pleadings, depositions, answers to interrogatories, and admissions on file, together with the affidavits, if any, show that there is no genuine issue as to any material fact and that the moving party is entitled to a judgment as a matter of law.”~ II There is no dispute as to the following facts except where specifically noted.
