SCHOOL BULLETIN Thursday 16th March 2017

Curriculum Day - Friday 17th of March Quote of the week. A reminder that tomorrow (Friday 17th March) is a student-free day at Primary School. Staff will be working with Educational Consultant David Anderson to further enhance Today, I shall teaching practice in alignment with our school’s Annual Implementation Plan. behave, as if School Sports Awards this is the day I

It was my great pleasure to attend the Victorian School Sports Awards at the will be Cricket Ground on Tuesday to celebrate the wonderful achievement of two of our community members. Remembered. Sport is a central part of our lives and communities, whether it be volunteering at local sporting associations, or staying up late to watch a major event being played live. From Dr. Seuss Sport is also just as vital in our schools. It teaches students to work as a team, and to lead and motivate others. They learn the importance of training, practise, patience and discipline, and importantly gives them an opportunity to make new friends.

On Tuesday at the Victorian School Sports Awards, Olivier Peios who graduated from Balwyn North Primary School in 2016, deservedly accepted a Sporting Blue Award for his achieve- ments in Soccer. Among other achievements in 2016, Olivier travelled to Belgium to attend a national football tournament and was also one of the youngest players in the Victorian under 12 football squad, which finished third at the School Sport Championships.

Our very own Mr D also excitedly accepted the Outstanding Teacher Contribution Award. As you are aware, Mr D works extremely hard to raise the profile of physical education and sport in our community and has a ‘can do’ attitude to anything he puts his mind to. He creates op- portunities to support our students to be the very best they can be and to enjoy what they are doing rather than focusing on ‘winning’ or ‘losing’. Mr D also inspires others by his per- sonal achievements with an example being his successful completion of the World Ironman Championship in Hawaii in 2016. He is a positive and influential role model and we are very In This Issue lucky to have him as part of our Balwyn North Primary School community.

Our heartfelt congratulations to both Olivier and Mr D. We are very proud of you both!  Principal’s News

Chess Tournament News

Last Thursday, our school competed in a "Chess Kids" tournament at Kerrimuir Primary School. Every year, we worry that our team will be depleted with the progress of some of our strongest players, to secondary school. However, we usually find that our dedicated players who remain, simply improve their skills and manage to maintain our position as one of the top Chess playing schools in Victoria. Our team of Callista Leong-La, Oliver Chen, Kovida De Silva, James Deng, Julia Hawkins, Sean Hawkins, Lincoln Kwan, Elizabeth Ngodinhson, David Wang, William Wu and Clare Zhu gave us confidence that we have a good Chess year ahead. We competed against many of our old rivals, who are some of the strongest schools in the State and each of our players did their very best, under difficult circumstance.

For David Wang, it was his first tournament representing our school. The smile on his face, throughout the day, showed that he was enjoying the challenge and he produced a fine result. Clare Zhu is an experienced player, but she was required to play against her previous school, Doncaster Gardens, who were the eventual winners on the day. Although she was obviously very pleased to see her old friends, Clare represented us extremely well and is now a dedicated B.N.P.S. player.

In a very close competition, our final position was fourth, just a point and a half below the win- ners. James Deng was our top player with 5.5 games, followed by Chess Captain, Callista Leong- La, who finished with 5, from 7 games played.

Finally, we would all like to sincerely thank Mr M (Matt Manuell) for giving up his lunch time to supervise the Chess Club, so that we could attend the tournament.

Popcorn! Popcorn! Popcorn!

On Wednesday the 15th of March the students in 1F had a Popcorn Day!

It all started when one of the students accidently spilt the popcorn from his lunch all over the classroom. The next day our teacher decid- ed it would be fun to make popcorn ourselves. We needed; a popcorn machine, a bowl and corn kernels. We made delicious popcorn from the kernels Miss McLeod got from the shop but then something amaz- ing happened…

Mr Stokes came into our classroom with a real cob of corn from our school garden. Because the cob of corn had dried up from the sun we tried to pop the kernels… but it didn’t work. We went outside to ex- plore further and decided that if we dry the kernels more they might pop. We’ll let you know how we go next week!

YEAR 2 MONEY SUPERHEROS!

Last Thursday, the Year 2 students were involved in two workshops with Captain Cash!

This was part of our ‘How We Organise Ourselves’ unit. The Concepts of Connection, Function and Responsibility were used to investigate that–

 Money is a system that is used for goods and services which are valued in a community.

 Humans earn and spend money.

Guided by Captain Cash, we were immersed in activities where the students became superheroes with their money. They were challenged to 'Speed to Their Needs' and 'Wait for Their Wants'. Captain Cash requested help from the students in preparation for a mission to ‘space school’. Students were challenged to use addition and subtraction to aid the superhero with her Space School supplies, during their visit to the Space Shopping Centre.

It was a fabulous presentation and we all had a great time.

Second Hand Uniform Sale We'll be having our first second hand uniform sale on the last Tuesday of term March 28th. We will be on the world map from 8.30am before school and until 4pm after school. Donations of clean uniforms can be left in a plastic bag at the office. The second hand uniform sale policy is included below or a printout can be picked up at the office.

Second Hand Uniform Stall policy for PFA at BNPS

The stall is a way to recycle and reuse school uniforms that still have plenty of wear and is usually held before and after school on the last Tuesday of each term in front of the school hall. All items are $5. Donations of clean and laundered uniforms are always welcome and can be left in a plastic bag at the front office. There is usually an item in the weekly bulletin, 3 weeks before the end of term asking for uniform donations and reminding people to check lost property for their belongings. With regards to lost property, in the second last week of term, all lost property is sorted and all labelled items, both uniform and other items such as lunchboxes and water bottles, are returned to the child’s teacher to dis- tribute. Extensive effort is made to return the labelled items to their owner. For each item, the labelled name (first and/or last) are compared to current class lists and if still not found the office staff confirm that the child of the label name has left the school. The label is then crossed out and donated to the second hand stall. Labels are also crossed out from donated uniforms. All unlabeled articles of school uniform are donated to the second hand stall and all non-uniform lost property including clothing and other items are donated to a local charity shop. Drop by for a chat at the next stall. You never know what you’ll find and it’s a handy way to pick up a spare jumper or two. If you have any further queries the office staff can direct, you to Kathleen Black and Janet Wheeler who usually run the stall.
