COUNCIL, 28 SEPTEMBER 2017 : WRITTEN QUESTIONS CHAIR OF PUBLIC PROTECTION COMMITTEE (COUNCILLOR JACKIE PARRY) W1 WRITTEN QUESTION FROM COUNTY COUNCILLOR DE’ATH A cross-party group of MPs are lobbying Transport for London to ban the company Uber from the UK capital. The MPs allege Uber is endangering the public, pointing to claims that the firm's drivers carry out a sexual assault every 11 days. The Metropolitan Police have also accused the taxi firm of not reporting all alleged sexual assaults by drivers on passengers. The MPs also argue that the company mistreats its workers, paying them as little as £2 per hour and accuse Uber of not paying VAT on its rides, allegedly escaping £40million in taxes. In a letter on behalf of the group of MPs sent to the head of Transport for London calling for Uber’s operating license not to be extended, Ilford North MP Wes Streeting said: "The safety of Londoners must be at the forefront of decisions taken about the taxi and private hire industry in our capital city. We do not believe that Uber has shown itself to be a fit and proper operator." In light of these developments, what is Cardiff Council’s position on the desirability of Uber operating in the Welsh capital and is the authority considering lobbying to have Uber’s operating license discontinued here? Reply Uber Britannia Ltd was issued with a private hire operator licence by the Council in September 2016 and the current licence remains in force for a maximum of five years. In issuing any operator licence, the Council has to be satisfied that the applicant is fit and proper to hold the licence. -

Do not be fooled, this party is the very same one who plunged us into austerity along with the banks and the only way we will get a fair and just deal is to support the labour movement. -

Is there a timeline for the completion of residential building development projects? Reply Planning permission, where required, will include a condition that relates to the commencement of the works, with completion being at the discretion of the landowner. Untidy land can be the subject of investigation under the Planning Act, but whether such investigation will lead to action through the courts will depend on the severity of case and the harm that is being caused to the amenity of the immediate area. Investigations are undertaken on a case-by-case basis and, should you wish to be advised of a particular development, then I can arrange for officers to investigate. The questions scrutinise policy audit process, policy content and communication. This section is worth 7.5% of your total score. Below each question you can see guidance on content and evidence. At any point, you may save and exit the form using the buttons at the bottom of the page. 1.1 Does the organisation have an audit process to ensure relevant policies (for example, HR policies) are explicitly inclusive of same-sex couples and use gender neutral language? GUIDANCE: The audit process should be systematic in its implementation across all relevant policies. Relevant policies include HR policies, for example leave policies. As new HR policies are introduced or existing policies are amended, the policy team, as a matter of good practice will check for inclusive language and amend where necessary. In addition, the HR Equality in the Workplace team systematically checks that policies and processes are equality assured on a regular basis. Policies are checked by the Equality Team on an individual basis when they are being revised, reviewed or updated by the HR Policy Team. -
Museum Activism
MUSEUM ACTIVISM Only a decade ago, the notion that museums, galleries and heritage organisations might engage in activist practice, with explicit intent to act upon inequalities, injustices and environmental crises, was met with scepticism and often derision. Seeking to purposefully bring about social change was viewed by many within and beyond the museum community as inappropriately political and antithetical to fundamental professional values. Today, although the idea remains controversial, the way we think about the roles and responsibilities of museums as knowledge- based, social institutions is changing. Museum Activism examines the increasing significance of this activist trend in thinking and practice. At this crucial time in the evolution of museum thinking and practice, this ground-breaking volume brings together more than fifty contributors working across six continents to explore, analyse and critically reflect upon the museum’s relationship to activism. Including contribu- tions from practitioners, artists, activists and researchers, this wide-ranging examination of new and divergent expressions of the inherent power of museums as forces for good, and as activists in civil society, aims to encourage further experimentation and enrich the debate in this nascent and uncertain field of museum practice. Museum Activism elucidates the largely untapped potential for museums as key intellectual and civic resources to address inequalities, injustice and environmental challenges.
